Where now for Miguel Sano

Remember when people were talking about Miguel Sano being “the next David Ortiz?” Ha. That sure didn’t happen. Sure, Sano had a few good years with the twins, and was a fan favorite, but that k rate always lingering around 30% sure didn’t help his play on the field. I think it was pretty obvious all along that sano wasn’t going to be the next David Ortiz, but the twins pulled the last straw when after just an ok 2021 season, he was injured, and in his 60 at bats, only managed to get five hits. That’s only a 083 batting average! They obviously turned down his 10m$ option and little has been heard about him since. We did hear he had gone to Tampa Bay’s facility’s, but that deal probably will never come over again. If he wants to continue playing baseball he has three options:

1. Sing a low-cost contract with a low level MLB team like the a’s or reds

2.Sing a minor league contract (most likely)

3. Go to japan and try to re-invent his swing

Any of those would at this point be good options for sano if he wants to continue playing baseball. At this time he is still a free agent floating around for any team that wants him.

I am a bit surprised that he hasn't gotten a minor league deal by now. I never expected him to get a major league contract. With ST started, he'd need to get in somewhere pretty soon. Really haven't seen or heard any rumors whatsoever linking him to any team. I guess that's kind of showing the true interest level. I just hope our FO doesn't give him another chance here.

It would seem Sanó’s public workout didn’t help his stock much. Most teams now could make room on their ML roster to add him if they chose and no one has.

Sanó has elite power, but poor bat-to-ball skills. He misses far too many pitches in the strike zone to truly take advantage of his big-time power.

I was wrong on Sano's contract situation this offseason. I thought he'd for sure get a major league pillow deal from some rebuilding team hoping to snag good Sano for the first half and flip him at the deadline. It's looking like he's really going to struggle to get a shot in the majors this year. I haven't seen anything about how his workout went, but I'd be curious what kind of shape he was/is in.

But can Sano SING?  Sorry, couldn't resist....

I was a huge Miggy fan when he hit the scene.. then I could not understand why they kept him around at the end.

That being said.. he really should sign a 2 year deal and learn how to hit the off-speed stuff and some discipline. Would be in his best interest!

No one in MLB wants him for one year.  Doubt he could even get two years in Japan.

I am sure there will be a team that has, or will offer a minor league contract.  My guess he was, or is, holding out for better.  He is still young enough that if he can get more contact, he will still have a chance to have a solid career hitting HR.  However, he is 30 now, or will be most of the season.  If he is willing to take minor league deal there will be a team willing to offer it I am sure, unless there is concern with his clubhouse chemistry.  Do not forget he was in news for some sexual harassment claims in the past.

Oh IDK about that. A former top 30 prospect in  all of MLB with 80 grade power should be able to land a minor league contract or something better in Japan. One hitting coach who gets through to him and you have a jack pot. There's got be be a few teams that will take a flier on that. Give it a week or two.

One thing I never understood about Sano was how he was relatively athletic in the field for his size (I remember him making some great plays at 3B when he was there) but that athleticism completely evaporated when it came to getting the bat on the ball. Obviously different skill sets, but you'd think that some baseline level of hand-eye coordination, etc. would carry over to at least raise his floor out of the cellar.

to be in the Show, you have to prove it.

Sano has to take it upon himself to improve.

I can wrap my head around what happened.  He was probably confident coming into 2022 and then injuries hit.  Unfortunately, he had used up the goodwill to keep him around.

I would like to see a Hitting Whisperer take a shot at Sano.  I mean he is not even Joey Gallo at the plate and that bar for batting average is below the Mendoza Line.

Personally, I would like to see the Twins do this because if he ever can just wrap his head around the whole process of hitting, he could be valuable.

But I am not holding my breath on Sano ever making it back to the Show.

He's at a point where it's time to exhibit some changes so teams can see how he might improve.  More Of The Same went away as a strategy when he couldn't stay healthy, couldn't make contact, and even injury-ravaged, power-starved MN 2022 wouldn't keep him around. He has to start working with Driveline or someone that shows he's thinking about new approaches and willing to listen, to change.  2019 was a long time ago when it comes to claiming a major league roster spot.

My speculation is he is still not healthy if no one offered him a contract after his showcase workout. I will be surprised if he plays in the majors again. His career really followed the Chris Carter path.

My comparison also , Chris Carter never played in mlb since 2017 with the Yankees  .,.

twin gave him a shot in 2018 , I can't remember if he made it to AAA  or was released during spring training  ...

He now is playing in Mexico  ...

To be fair, David Ortiz wasn’t “David Ortiz” until he left the twins.

To be fair, Ortiz wasn’t Ortiz until he left the Twins. We held him back and tried to get him to dink and dunk singles like everyone else. Our organization hasn’t exactly been known to be stellar talent developers.

Sadly, his name does not even appear on the Dominican Republic WBC roster (they played against the Twins yesterday).   One would hope that he has enough left in the tank to not completely disappear from the world baseball stage.  Life does sometimes get complicated, and he would certainly not be the first nor the last person to exit from the public eye with a hard landing.

I wouldn't be opposed to offering him a minor league contract but it would have to be structured very carefully with clear goals and expectations.  If he wants to toil away in the minors for a few more years (he's 29/30) that's fine, but he needs to do some real soul searching and strictly discipline himself if he ever wants to get back to the majors.  He has the raw talent, but his inability to grow as a hitter and see the plate and pitches as well as control his impulses to overeat have torpedoed his career.
