Rumor: Corbin Burnes is upset with Brewers. Could the Twins be able to make a trade?

Corbin Burnes is upset with Brewers per MLB Trade Rumors. A trade could be incoming, should the Twins jump in on the opportunity? Here is my proposal (it will probably take a lot to get a deal done)

Brewers get: Lewis, Rodriguez, Winder, Julien, and Maeda

Twins get: Corbin Burnes

This trade was listed as a moderate overpay on BTV. However I feel like because of the high level hitting prospects that are being given up could get the deal done. We have a logjam in the infield and corner outfield spots so it makes sense and I would rather have Lee over Lewis or Julien.

Would you trade Ryan and Duran? The Twins would improve the 23 and 24 teams and have an ace if they make the playoffs. They give up a lot of years of control beyond the 2 they get from Burnes.

If the Brewers are looking for prospects the Twins probably can’t compete with other teams. They don’t have elite prospects or any really good pitching prospects to send. Lee, Lewis and Rodriguez would make it about even according to BTV but I think the Brewers would look for a better headliner or at least one that is a top pitching prospect.

No way! How will we ever have a good prospect pipeline if we drain it every time we think a SP might be available.

Burnes publicly expressing his displeasure over the arbiters decision speaks a great deal to his personal character. While he may be unhappy over the amount, I see no reason why the Brewers would want to trade him. I also don't see him being able to force a trade either, because the Brewers would just ask for an unrealistic return (see Reynolds, Bryan and Pittsburgh).

Burnes is not going anywhere soon, especially to Minnesota.

There’s no chance Burnes is getting traded at this time. Nor are the Twins in any position to make a trade like that as @Major League Readysaid. We’re projected to win 82 games…

The ONLY way I make a deal is if Burnes agrees to an extension before the deal....and even then, I'd rather just back up the truck for Nola next year and keep the elite prospects it would take to get Burns. Also, agreed, the Brewers aren't dealing him THIS year.

What does it say about him, other than he actually honestly answered questions? There is nothing negative here, imo.

Lewis (24 in June), Rodriguez (20 in a week or do), Winder (26), Julien (24 in April), and Maeda (35)

Besides Rodriguez and Lewis to a lesser extent I would hardly classify these players as the pipeline. Julien could become a solid player and Winder is only a couple of years younger than Burnes.

With that said I see little to no chance the Brewers making that trade, I see them asking for Ryan and Lee, or Ryan, Lewis, Julien or SWR and a really young pitcher.

I would not make any of those trades without a extension, but with an extension, I like the original one and the last one I wrote.

I really don't want to trade Lewis, Lee or Rodriguez.  But I like that you put this out there.  It makes for interesting conversation.  Burns is easily a top 5 pitcher in all of baseball.  If a team is going to get him, my guess is that the Dodgers would put together a package and land him for the front of their rotation.  The Dodgers have been uncharacteristically "frugal" this winter while the Padres keep pushing more and more chips to the middle of the table.  And then as Kershaw ages out, I could see the Dodgers going all in on Ohtani next year (if not at the trade deadline).  They've got the money to just keep chasing stars.

I like Mike Sixel's suggestion of going after Aaron Nola next year with zero prospect loss.  We will probably have some SP openings and Nola would be tremendous.  I feel the Twins are on the verge of finally seeing great things from Lewis, Kirilloff, and Larnach.  In addition, Brooks Lee is probably closer than many of us think as well as Julien.  Then there's Rodriguez.  I want to see some extended run by this young, up and coming core before I deal any of them away.  We sold high on Arraez and got a top of rotation SP.  We had Polanco on board already, with Kirillofff, Julien, Lewis and Lee.  We fleeced the Fins with the addition of the 2 lottery pick prospects.  If the Pohlads are willing to spend money like they haven't before (and there are indications this could be the case within reason) then stick with the kids and see what we've got.

The Twins are not trading Emmanuel Rodriguez.

Corbin Burnes is a true ace. Milwaukee is looking to win this year and will not trade him unless they are out of it by late July.

The return for Burnes would need to be 2-3 starting pitchers with control and a couple of projectable position players. Ryan, Ober, Woods Richardson, Raya, or Prielipp qualify for the former. Kirilloff, Larnach, Salas, Lewis, Miranda, Mercedes, Miller,  Martin, or Lee work for the latter.

The only way the Twins work a trade for Bunes would be with both an extension completed and the emergence of a host of their young players. Say that all of the above have great starts to their season. In that event, the Twins may feel there is room to trade four guys for Burnes and still be safely covered by the retention of the other guys.

I guess we see things differently. Rodriguez, Lewis & Julien are a major part of the pipeline IMO.

You're right on the Brewers - there is no reason for them to trade Burnes as there staff alone should keep them competitive.

For my taste big trades for pitchers are too risky. We need to develop pitching from within.

I agree that the price would be steep.

Still, since Milwaukee expects to compete this year, it’s extremely unlikely they trade Burnes now. Burnes has no leverage to do anything than pitch the best he can to ensure the life-changing contract that is two years away. Milwaukee is just fine with that. And if they DID trade him, they’d want part of the deal to include at least one very solid (not returning from injury like Maeda) starter…and/or a top of the top pitching prospect very near readiness. Twins just aren’t a good match.

I'd love to have Burnes but they won't make him available now. They'll want to see how they do in the first half and then decide. If the Brew Crew is under .500 in July and the Twins aren't this will be a very interesting thread!

Welcome to TD!

The Phillies are talking to Nola about an extension. They are a big market. The Twins would have a shot at Burnes in July if Milwaukee decides to listen, but the cost may be too dear. It never hurts to keep a dialogue open and gage what the Brewers seek as a return and if there are possibilities for a match.

I saw that report too and I was tempted to try to maneuver a trade. But I came to the same conclusion as most everyone else, this isn't the time. Anything can happen but IMO we be under selling on these players to trade at this time for 2 yrs. of Corbin. We need our top pitching prospects But that's what they'll want & even then it won't be enough for them.
