Kirk Gibson Offers Hope for Alex Kirilloff

A first round draft pick that never hits .300, never hits 30 home runs, never drives in a hundred runs, never gets a hundred and sixty hits in a season and is never an all-star is a huge win.  Sure.  Ok.  NOW we understand why we haven't won a World Series since the first Bush administration.

If we're talking about Gibson, he did get 160 hits in a season (167 in 1985) but he also won an MVP and 2 World Series. Didn't hit 30 HRs, but totals were lower during his prime and he still hit over 25 HRs 4 times. Might not have been voted in to the all-star game, but deserved it at least 3 times. A guy isn't a good player because he crosses over an arbitrary round number.

Actually he's an average player because he DOESN'T cross thresholds that have defined greatness for much of the history of the game.  It would be one thing if he didn't cross one, or some of them but he never crossed ANY of them.  Lucky for him he's only the second most overrated football player from Michigan State named Kirk.  And you don't have to be voted in to be an all-star, in fact most all-stars aren't voted in.

I just want to bring it back a smidge. Initially your claim was that using Gibson as a comp does not inspire confidence. If not Kirk Gibson, who would inspire confidence for you?

I'm not actually looking for confidence.  I'm just looking for Kirilloff to do is damn job.  Saying he can be like an historically underachieving player is not gonna cut it for me.  Especially when we've seen nothing yet to indicate that he can even be that good.
