The Twins cannot trade Arraez

Recommended Posts

They can’t and here is why.

1. He won a batting title. Did the Twins trade Joe Mauer and Rod Carew? No! Why trade Arraez?
2. I have been browsing around the forums and I have seen multiple people comparing Arraez’s hitting to Tony Gwynn. If you had Tony Gwynn on your team would you trade him? No probably not. If they end up trading him for Pablo Lopez it would probably end up being one of the worst trades in franchise history. So here is my proposal for Pablo Lopez

Twins get: Pablo Lopez

Marlins Get: Max Kepler, Emilio Pagan, Austin Martin, and Royce Lewis

Thoughts?

1. Batting titles are dum. They don't really measure much other than you got to first base a lot. At a minimum the "batting title" should be OPS. Heck it's a much bigger number anyway!

2. Arraez is not Tony Gwynn by any measure other than both were/are charismatic, athletically challenged guys who could put the bat to the ball. Tony struck out half as much over his whole career and even though he was known as a 'singles hitter' has a bunch more ISO than Luis.

Arraez is the perfect headliner in a trade because you're trading the hope he could maybe if things go right be almost someone you could mention in the same breath as Tony Gwynn. There's value in possibility. Maybe even 6+ years of controlable pitching (Luzardo and Cabrera, plz).

Replace Lewis with Arraez and you might be on to something. Most likely, the Fish would like Arraez and some other prospects for even Lopez. Because projectable pitching is much more valuable than the kind of hitting Arraez does. Arrazed for Lopez 1-1 is slanted in favor of the Twins and Lopez really isn't that much better than who we already have. But he would be more of it, so still a good get.

First, no player is untradable in my opinion.  As long as the return is worth it, any player can be traded.  Now, I agree I would not trade straight up for Lopez, which as been a rumor the Marlins are asking for.  The Twins have rejected that offer.  There are rumors they are looking at more controllable pitching.  You say we cannot trade Arraez, but what if the offer was Arraez for  Sandy Alcantara, would you do that?  What if it was Arraez for Alcantra and one of their other staters?

Again, I doubt Marlins do this, but my point is, at some point you have say that is good deal and be willing to trade Arraez.  If your post was just not for Lopez, okay, but if your post, as titled, is in no offer at all, then I disagree.

1). ???????What?????? Also, this is 2023 not 1983, a batting title doesn't carry much weight any more.

2). If these people compared Miguel Sano to Babe Ruth, I assume you'd want him back as well?

You are absolutely nuts!

Did you see Royce Lewis play last year?

The Twins were so excited by his numbers they desperately tried to get him in the lineup. In doing so, they played him out of position and may possibly destroyed his career! He has the potential to be a superstar & is worth far more than Arraez will ever be!

I wouldn't trade anyone  for Lopez or any mid level starter at this point. Arraez & Kepler + a prospect for a top notch starter - you bet!

Arraez is fun to watch with a bat in his hand, but is a one tool player with no power, no speed, weak defense and bad knees. He is not Tony Gwynn & a 313 batting title doesn't compare at all to Aaron Judge 312 Ave AND 60 HR.

I wouldn't do that deal because Martin & Lewis have so much more to offer the Twins individually than Arraez. Both are much much better defensively, base running & HRs. Lewis is MVP material and Martin is a OB machine that can tear up the bases.

I have been in the “we shouldn’t trade Arraez” camp for a while….until today. My reason for not wanting to trade him was mainly because I see him as the table setter at the top of the order to get on base ahead of Buxton and Correa. But I’ve decided today that a quality pitcher like Lopez (though I’d prefer Luzardo) is way more valuable. You win in the playoffs with pitching. We need a quality starter to help eat more innings and to lengthen the entire staff which helps the bullpen. If I was running the show I’d get this deal done today. I think the Twins are better defensively than the Marlins so Lopez’s ERA which some have referenced as being too close to 4, will go down with the Twins.

On another note, if we do trade Arraez, I’d like to see the Twins go out and sign Yuli Gurriel on a one year deal. I know he’s going to be 39 in June, but he’s still an elite gold glove winning defender at first base. He won the batting title in 2021 and while he took a step back last year hitting .244, he was clutch in the playoffs and his defensive skills didn’t suffer. His bat to ball skills are still great as he only struck out 14% of the time last year. He’s a right handed bat which the Twins could use. If you traded Arraez for pitching, you could bat Buxton lead off followed by Gurriel and Correa.

I have no problem with the comps to Tony Gwynn through their first 4 seasons, but your mileage may vary. Arraez has shown a bit more power than Gwynn, but Gwynn had much more speed. Advantage: Gwynn. And obviously Gwynn never struck out so that’s a bit unfair, but Arraez has a very low strikeout rate for the times we are playing in too.

Will Arraez play at an elite level into his 40s? Also Doubtful. However, I think trading Arraez for pitching would be like robbing Peter to pay Paul. They are all in with Correa so it would need to be prospect capital to trade, not MLB talent.

That's too much for two years of a number three starter.

Agreed, and I don’t know what the future value numbers are, but if you are not high on Martin and you feel Kepler is expendable, and you feel there is a window in the these next 2 seasons, then it becomes a much more interesting question.

I meant with Lewis..... But even without him that seems like a lot for two years of control.

I'd consider your trade proposal for like, Jesus Luzardo or Edward Cabrera and something else (Sanchez/Meyer), or for Eury Perez (not happening).

But not for Pablo Lopez. Lewis on his own is too much for a mid-to-back-end starter. I don't know why anyone has this idea that Lopez is better than a #3 pitcher. He's not. He'd be like the #4 starter on this Twins team, at best, in my opinion.

I'm glad the Twins supposedly rejected a straight 1-for-1 deal around Arraez, because they should have.

It's more than this. If the return is worth it any player should be traded. I wish everyone here understood this. It would cut down greatly on frivolous chatter and make it easier to find the more worthwhile posts.

Trading Royce Lewis straight up for Pablo Lopez would be insane, much less as part of a package.

OMG that's way too much for Lopez.  He's only got 2 years left of control.

I love watching Arraez but he is very tradeable and partly because of the batting title his value is higher than it ever will be.  I am not saying sell low on him, I wouldn't do 1 for 1 for Lopez, but they should certainly be entertaining offers.

His best position is 1b or DH, but he is 5'9 and won't top 10-12 homeruns.

His knees have and will be a continuing issue going forward.

As a bat first player with limited power and speed his value is always ready to tank as soon as he slumps.  If he isn't hitting .310+ and drawing walks he is a below average 1b/ DH.

Correa/ Arraez/ Miranda/ Kirilloff/ Lee/ Lewis/ Farmer/ Gordon/ Martin/ Julien.  That is a log jam of infield talent under control for years and some pieces need to be used to upgrade the roster where it is weaker.

Of course they can trade Arraez. They've got a comparable, perhaps even better and more complete player, in Edouard Julien set to make his debut probably this season.

Julien won't have quite the elite bat-to-ball skills that Arraez has, but he is a good bet to hit in the .280-.310 range all the same. Plus, he's going to get on base a lot more often via the free pass than Arraez does. After he walks to first base, Julien is a much bigger threat to steal second than Arraez on account of his knees not being one bad step away from total annihilation. And, when he's being walked, he's a good bit more of a home run threat than Arraez. Defensively they're pretty much the same person, except that Julien gives you a bigger target to throw to at 1B.

If you can get a top of the rotation arm for Arraez and can immediately plug Julien into his role, you kind of have to make that trade. I just hope they get more than Lopez for him.

If I'm giving that package of players to the Marlins, I had better be getting Alcantara plus back. Trading those four for only Lopez would rightly get Falvine a spot right next to TR in the history books.

He does little other than hit for average.  He doesn't walk.  50 walks last year.  Mauer and Carew had (usually far) more than that every season.  Negligible power.  Average defender at best.  He won a batting title with an OPS under .800   That's hard to do.  D.J. LaMahieu won a title with only 10 home runs but still had an OPS over 1.000   By the time Mauer's OPS got down to where Arraez' is Twins fans were clamoring for him to be gone.   Knees are living on borrowed time. If you can get a front line starter for him, DO IT NOW

Sell when the value is the highest. Arraez will never have higher value than he does now. Those knees are not going to improve at all.

Keep him and he might be a productive hitter for another 2-3 years before those knees make him a light-hitting, slightly above average on-base, postionless player.

If that is true, then we need to sell Duran. You would not advocate that would you?

Arraez is not in the same group as Carew and Mauer. Arraez has no position if Kirilloff is healthy and can play first. His value will never be higher. We need elite starting pitching if we want to get into and win in the postseason. He has bad knees and they will get worse. Arraez and Kepler for an elite starter, just do it !!!
