At the time, yes. I think it was the best move for our organization. He was telling us he wanted to test the FA market. He had no loyalty to signing back with us.

Agreed. I think he was good as gone. Would have liked to get a more concrete prospect than Austin Martin. But hindsight is 20/20

Jose Berrios was bad last year, after coming out of Spring Training with a dead arm. I believe his career ERA is over 4.2. He's always been that guy that looks amazing, with great horizontal movement on his pitches(was it a 4 seamer or sinker? I don't recall, but it looked like a slider at times).

Then he had these blowups every 4th or 5th start.

I kept thinking that one of these seasons he was going to put it all together and win a Cy Young.  After last season, I no longer think that. He is what he is. He has great stuff. An innings eater that will get quality starts, some Ks and rocked often enough to leave you scratching your head. Just enough talent to get paid like a front-of-the-rotation starter. Just enough inconsistency that you don't want to roll into a playoff series needing him to win as your #1.

And in Toronto he’s the 3rd or 4th starter and might not make a post season start

Yeah, it's hard to see him leap frogging Manoah, Gausman or Bassit if all goes as planned.

If last year's troubles are corrected, I think he slots in nicely to a rotation at 3 or 4. If he continues to battle dead arm and has another up and down (mostly down) season then I am concerned about the arm

"Dead arm" can be so many things.

I do feel like eventually this could be called the Woods Richardson trade. LOVED Berrios (and still am a fan of him) but the deal was solid for both sides.

I'm a big Berrios fan, but I'm a bigger SWR & Martin fan. Martin stock came down, both are very underrated. Look out this year, both will be on a tear.

Since JB signed his extension with TOR before the end of the season, it's definitely good the Twins traded him. He was just gone. He seems to be a guy who has difficulty being coached and maintaining focus. Very talented, but just not reliable. SWR and Martin both still look like good pickups even if most of the value seems to be on SWR's side.

Berrios had a decent ‘21, but only threw 70 or so innings. Last year he threw over 170, but led the league in both hits and earned runs given up.  His ERA was over 5.3.

So he barely played in ‘21, was awful in ‘22 (would have been no better performing than our #5 except for eating innings), and he’s expensive.

The Berrios trade for SWR and Martin was one of this FO’s better moves. We will see what becomes of SWR and Martin, but we didn’t give up anything per se. Sorry, but other than innings, JB is not contributing much.

(One could argue that we wouldn’t have traded for Mahle last season if we still had Berrios - so there’s that.  But if that were the case, would JB be better than our #4 starter?)

Of course. Berrios has fallen off a cliff ever since he was traded and the Twins acquired Austin Martin and Simeon Woods-Richardson in exchange. That’s not a trade. That’s a heist.

It's only a heist if either of those two accomplish anything. If berrios is back to 200 innings and a sub 4 ERA next year and the prospects become suspect it's a heist in Toronto's favor.

As with all trades, it's necessary to see what kind of career performance the principals have after the transaction. It's still way to soon to know which team, if either, came out ahead. But I think it was a good trade to make given the circumstances at the time it occurred.
