The Athletic: Carlos Correa, Twins accelerate talks as deal with Mets remains in limbo

$28M is not Top Ten money.

We are considering money plus years in the context of other mega deals. I saw something that said the San Fran offer would have put Correa in one of the Top Ten mega contracts of all time.

That type of offer is completely off the table at this point, as would be the 10/285 offer the Twins made. No way, not close, not even in the ballpark anymore.

So I wonder if we can conclude that Houston did not like that image of Correa’s injury either, and gave it 5 years max before it became too much of a concern.

Subtracting the previous season when Correa was with the Twins, that would put the Houston contract at four more years from today.

If Correa returns to the Twins, that four years will be my gauge to whether it’s a contract favorable to the Twins. These are going to be tense negotiations, but if I were the Twins, I’d hold firm. The Twins absolutely will need the ability to get out from under this contract at some point, soon.

I’m also concerned about the annual value being way too high, but that’s because I’m just not personally sold on Correa being a Top Ten MLB talent. But that’s just me and we can disagree on that.

Neither the total $$$ or the AAV of the current offer with the Mets are Top 10 MLB.

Agreed and explained directly above. Any thoughts on the rest of it— what would you put a fair Correa contract at at this point?

Go with the original 10/$285, but no opt-outs/player options. After 5 years, vesting/team options and/or performance based incentives could increase contract value, something along the lines of Buxton's.

Reportedly 6/$200 MM with vesting options of up to 4 years and $70 MM - total 10/$270 MM

Other than 10 guaranteed years, I was pretty close

Way too much money and unless there are team option, I think it will hamper their desire to extend Lewis or Lee when the time is right.

Lee hasn't even debuted yet. The Twins already control him for more than 6 years. If this deal "hampers" their ability to extend Lee it is 100% the Pohlads going cheap. After the 6 years his AAV drops to under 20 a year. That's nothing.

I laid out a full argument for what a fair value for Correa would be, and you have decided to nitpick a detail.

I quoted the comment you made. You claimed it will "hamper their desire to extend Lewis and Lee." I pointed out why it shouldn't hamper a Lee extension in any way, shape, or form. I'm sorry if you didn't actually mean it'd hamper a Lee extension. The comment I responded to was 1 sentence, not a "full argument."

In the future, feel free to address the full argument too.

I didn't see the full argument and am not going to go back and read it. You made a claim after the deal was announced that this deal is too much money and will hinder their ability to extend players that won't be free agent eligible until 2029 at the earliest. I don't care what the rest of the argument was, I directly refute that idea based on the fact that by then Carlos Correa will be making back end starter money, if he's even on the team anymore.

You didn’t see what I said, but you rush to make a comment about it.

Here let me summarize: I thought a fair deal for Correa would be something like 4/128, which is what would be remaining on Houston’s offer. Team opt outs for anything beyond that.

Welp.

The bad news is that we have a front office who sits down at the winter meetings with the other front offices and don’t see any suckers sitting around the table.

The good news is Correa is a damn good shortstop and if a bunch of other things break in the Twins favor, we will be contending for the postseason again in 2023.

Again, I don't need to see any more of the argument to know that it doesn't hinder their ability to extend the 2 players you mentioned. It's that simple. You stated it'd hurt their ability to extend Lewis and Lee. I refuted that specific claim and explained why.
