Report: Twins in Contact with Correa's Representatives

Carlos Correa's free agent saga continues to take new turns. Reports surfaced Thursday night that the Twins contacted Scott Boras about Correa.

So you're telling me there's a chance? That might not be entirely true, but the Twins are doing their due diligence regarding Carlos Correa. The New York Post's Jon Heyman reported that "Carlos Correa's camp has been in contact with at least one other team" as his talks with the Mets haven't made progress. In the story, he specifically mentions the Twins as one team that has contacted Boras, but there may be others. Those talks might not be serious, but this negotiation could have other layers.

Earlier tonight, Nick wrote extensively about the Twins' offseason up to this point. Part of that story focused on the ongoing Correa saga. Correa and Boras walked away from a contract with the Giants because of concerns with his physical, and the Mets' doctors have flagged the same issue. Minnesota's last known offer to Correa was for ten years and $285 million. There is no guarantee that the offer is still on the table, and the Twins would need to complete their own physical before a deal of this magnitude.

Boras is also likely using this type of story to put extra pressure on the Mets to complete the deal. Steve Cohen, the Mets owner, has been outspoken about his desire for Correa to be added to the club's line-up. Heyman quotes someone in the Mets organization that said, "Ultimately, I don't think Mr. Cohen is going to let him go." There have been other reports that the Mets were trying to alter parts of the contract to get the deal done. Correa is unlikely to want to return to the open market after everything that has happened to him.

From Correa's perspective, the free agent process has been frustrating over the last two seasons. Last winter, he turned down a 10-year offer from the Detroit Tigers and fired his agent before hiring Boras. The MLB Lockout didn't help his first taste of free agency, as there was a rush to sign players after the completed deal. He signed a creative contract with the Twins, so he could have the opportunity to be a free agent again this winter. There has been a lot of money handed out to the top free agents this offseason, and Correa was expecting to be in that group.

Carlos Correa Free Agent Timeline
March 22, 2022: Signs with the Twins for three years, $105.3 million, including opt-outs after each season.
November 7, 2022: Opts out of Twins contract.
December 13, 2022: Reports surface that Correa agrees to a 13-year, $350 million deal with the Giants.
December 20, 2022: Giants postponed Correa's introductory press conference.
December 21, 2022: Correa agrees to deal with the Mets for 12 years, $315 million.
December 24, 2022: Mets doctors flag a similar issue to what was found by Giants doctors.

Moving forward, the Mets are still the frontrunners to sign Correa. His family is already in a New York state of mind as he has posted pictures to social media of his child wearing a New York-themed outfit. Boras has previously worked out contracts with injury language for players like JD Martinez, JD Drew, Ivan Rodriguez, and Magglio Ordonez. However, Correa's reported contract is significantly longer and for a more significant amount of money. No matter where Correa plays next season, this type of contract provision will be a requirement.

Could the Twins wind up with Correa after all or is this a ploy from Boras to get the Mets deal done? Leave a COMMENT and start the discussion.

Boras and Correa want the best deal period. I do think Correa would prefer being in a big market (Dior anyone?).  I also believe Cohen wants him, The issue is the years and insurance, and my belief that as rich as Cohen is, he is tapped out on Salary for the next couple years. If clauses have the potential to wipe out the last 4-5 years of the deal, this is really a 200 million offer.  At that point a higher AAV deal with shorter amount of years makes sense and I think the Twins would play in that playground.  Odds are both sides give a little and Correa officially becomes a Met, however I am ready for the next chapter of this Soap opera.

I think this offseason has been embarrassing for our front office.  The Twins need to find success through development.  Even if we got Correa look at the AL East and big market players.  The strategy needs to be developing players and stocking the farm. Instead this front office has created a team that can't win an awful division while managing to deplete the farm system.  Sorry guys but it's time to rebuild, restock, and move on.

I will say the team has a competitive rotation.  But there's still no ace to win a postseason game.  Correa doesn't solve it...just like he didn't last year.

I agree with your premise, bolded above.

However, when your top prospects are constantly on the DL, it's tough: Lewis, Kiriloff, Larnach, Canterino, along with the star, Buxton.

And when others under-perform, tougher still: Balazovic, Martin.

I think your strategy is shared by the front office, but what to do when nobody can play because of hurts?

Why do we need to move on?  If we can get back in and get Correa that will be a big win for 2023 Twins.  Sure we’re are likely a willing pawn in this but until he is a Met we still have a chance.  Also we provide an opportunity to stay at SS while he has to move to third with the Mets.  Anyways I can watch this play out through spring training if need be cause what else are the Twins gonna do?  A rebuild?

TD: Okay, if you’re just tuning in, we’re taking calls. Tonight’s subject is Carlos.. Have you seen him? Has he said anything about us? Let’s take another call. Hello?

Caller #1: Hey, TD, I saw Carlos in Atlanta with his family.

TD: The one in Georgia?

Caller #1: Oh, yeah.

TD: Really? Did he look happy?

Caller #1: Yeah. I guess so.

TD: [ upset ] Good. Good for him, that’s great. Seriously, that’s really, really good. I can’t tell you how happy I am for him.

Caller: Okay, man, see you later. [ hangs up ]

TD: Okay, good. He deserves to be happy. I’m glad, I really am. [ changing the subject ] Alright, now’s the time in the show when I like to give Carlos a call and hang up on him. [ dials phone, it rings twice ]

Carlos on phone: Hello? [ TD hangs up sadistically ]

TD: That was great! Now, let’s bring out my first guest. He lives down the street from me, and has known Carlos since kindergarten, Daryl Fitzsimmons [ Daryl greets us, then sits down ].

Hey, uh, Daryl, don’t you think Carlos and the Twins made a good couple?

Daryl Fitzsimmons: [ reflecting ] Yeah.. definitely.

TD: I know. What’s with him?

Daryl Fitzsimmons: [ continuing to reflect ] I don’t know, man.

TD: Okay, thanks for coming by, Daryl.

Daryl Fitzsimmons: Thanks! [ leaves the set ]

TD: Okay, uh, let’s move on to this week’s Carlos Trivia Question. The question is: Last summer when Carlos took his niece to Chuck E. Cheese, how long did Carlos say we’d be together? The answer is: Forever. Hmm.. I guess in Chuck E. Cheese, Forever means Eight Months.

[ upset ] I can’t believe he did this to us! It’s not fair. What did I do wrong, Carlos? Just tell me, and I’ll stop doing it!

Tonight, we have a brand new segment for our show. Let’s call up the guy I heard Carlos has been negotiating with, and hang up on him. [ dials phone, it rings twice ]

Steve Cohen on phone: Hello. Hello? Hello??

TD: [ sadistically ] I’m gonna kill you.

Cohen: [ angry ] Who is this??

TD: [ hangs up quickly ] Okay! That really was fun. Now, every week on the show, I like to take out an old quote Carlos said to me, and sigh painfully as I read it. This one was from the All Star Break. [ He reads note, sighs painfully, reads, sighs painfully, reads, sighs. ] Okay. Now is the part of the show where I look at Carlos' picture, and I talk to it. [ Picks up Carlos' picture, stares at it ] Why? Why do you push me away when all I want to do is love you? Take me back, Carlos, please..

To be clear, the NY Post article says that Boras has checked in with other teams.  Twins are one of the teams "in contact" with Boras.  The article doesn't say that the Twins "have contacted" Boras.  Boras seems to be reaching out to the Twins, not visa versa.

Wait a sec.

Is it possible that the information that we read about is purposely released and possibly used as manipulation?

If so... If we then take this information and then draw conclusions based upon it. Is it possible that we have been manipulated?

If so... is it possible that Wheaties is only claiming to be the "Breakfast of Champions" because they want us to think that? Is it possible that All State wants us to believe that we are in Good Hands? Are we being manipulated?

If any of this is true? I might have to think about what is making me angry and how my anger is just feeding the manipulation machine?

If Boras wants to play some hardball, I’d go right back at them in the media and say, “yes, we’ve had talks, but we’re still evaluating the potential enormous risks here.  Massive, unprecedented risks associated with such a long-term commitment.  So unbelievably risky that’s it’s hard to even put into words.”

I am wondering at this point should we even want to sign him to the 10 year deal offered?  Two mega spending teams had basic terms and balked after seeing his physical.  The reports I have read are Mets want and injury opt out if his leg does act up down the road.  That is one of the main things being discussed.  I am also wondering if the insurance companies will not cover the contract if that is the injury that happens.  Contracts like these have insurance for the team generally, meaning if the player gets a career ending injury or several seasons, insurance will pay the contract and not the team.  However, the physical may raise enough of a red flag for insurance to say we will not take on the risk, and that is why teams are balking, because if the injury does act up, they are fully on the hook for a guy that is not playing.

5/225. No opt outs, no protections for the Twins if he's injured. Offer it and see if he bites.

Maybe this type of deal has already been discussed with the Mets. But it sure is looking like Carlos is either going to have

to accept a deal like this, or something like the deal he had in place with all kinds of protections, etc against his injury.

Let's hope Mets finally sign Correa.  Then hopefully we can move on from this fiasco.  IMO we need much more than Correa to be considered serious contenders.  If the Giants and Mets are concerned about his physical health shouldn't the Twins be as well?  No more deals with opt out clauses!!  It's a joke and hurts Twins, not help.  If you are going to invest millions on a player then the commitment shouldn't be one sided.  He never has wanted to make a commitment here at all unless it benefitted him only.  Don't get used again, Twins.  Forget Correa and make some real additions that improve your team.

I agree they need more than Correa, but can't Correa be part of it? It's not like they're spending free agent dollars anywhere else. They have enough free cash flow to pay Correa's entire 10 year contract over the next 3 seasons.

Pretty sure I'd rather have him at 10/285. 5 years $60M for his ages 33-38 seasons is pretty cheap. $12M will barely get you a starting infielder in 2028.

Yes, maybe. I just feel like he will be all but worthless those last 5 years. Maybe 5/200 would be better. My point is we have alot of young cheap guys right now, so spend it while we can. Later in that contract, maybe we will be giving that extra money to Lewis.?

It is sort of hilarious how we basically have Zombie Correa Free Agency: it never truly ends.

Would I take Correa, even with the potential risks that have started cropping up with the medicals from both the Giants & the Mets? yes, because with the Twins as a FA destination...you have to take some risks. Correa answers a lot of questions for the twins in the short term, even with the medicals. Hilariously, it would instantly take the Twins from a bad off-season to a pretty great one in one swing.

If you told everyone in early December the Twins were going to sign Correa, Vasquez, and Gallo the response would have been: "wow!" followed by "wait, how does Gallo fit on this roster?" and we'd be spending all our time trying to figure out if Kepler's being traded and for what...

I don't think it's going to happen. There's some noise, but in the end I think there's barely any chance that Correa ends up back here, so I'm viewing the whole thing with a sort of eye-rolling bemusement.

The Twins will run into the same issues as the Mets regarding insurance coverage.  It would have to be a different insurance  company than the Mets and have differing actuarial tables that would allow us to offer different years/amounts than the Mets.  Otherwise, this comes down to his choice of teams/locations.
