Mea Culpa

Many proclamations of doom have been made over the last few weeks regarding the moves the Twins have made (or lack thereof).  What to expect out of players or teams.  Personally, hearing the same drum beat over and over is getting a little tiresome.  Let's change things up a bit.

I am calling out all prognosticators:  what have you been wrong about?  What move did you rail and rail on that ended up going the other way?  Did somebody you wholeheartedly praise totally fall apart?  Everybody here is willing to shout their opinions from the mountaintop.  Are you just as willing to admit you were wrong?  Here is your chance to confess your sins and fess up...

Me:  I was convinced the Berrios trade would come back to kill us.  So far, not so much.  Same with the Garver trade.

As always, be respectful

I know the Berrios trade hasn't hurt us but a year and a half in we've got 5 big league innings pitched to show for it.  Hasn't exactly helped us yet either.  Yes, I know, there's still time to get results and reason to be hopeful.  But you can't make soup out of hopeful.

I think you 100% missed the point of this thread.

I suppose a similar whiff is Nick Gordon being for real.  But I still consider the jury to be out, on him being more than a utility player, because I'm stubborn like that.

I consider the jury still out on him as well. Was last year improvement or just his career year?  I'm that way with Jax as well.

Career year, maybe, but he had what felt like a career day in Detroit on June 2 this year when my sons were there with me to give me the horse laugh over the disparaging remarks I may or may not have offered about Gordon before the game.

I thought Buxton would stay healthy and win MVP last year.

I thought Sano was much better than he was.  He was just such a monster his rookie year, I couldn’t let it go.  Still one of favorite Twins ever to watch that year, and in 2019 (that homer against the Yankees in the classic July game was incredible).

I thought the Berrios trade was awful.  It hasn’t been due to Berrios being terrible, not the return being better than expected.

Im wrong a lot.  Hopefully this FO proves me wrong.

I thought Duffey would figure it out in ‘22 - not happening for him!!

Thought Josh Donaldson would be solid defender and add some serious thump to our line-up!!!

Liked the López acquisition! Pagan couldn’t get any worse!

None of these expectations are any good - not fruitful.

Here's my list.

Matthew LeCroy would be a 40 HR a year hitter if left at DH full time.

Gene Larkin would replace Kent Hrbek and be a stud for years.

Matt Capps would be a long term solid closer for the team.

Brian Buchanan- See LeCroy above.

Trevor Plouffe would win several Gold Gloves after mastering 3B.

I thought the Dozier trade would eventually be known as the Smeltzer trade.

There have also been a lot I was wrong about that worked out for them:

Didn't like the Nelson Cruz signing.

First time I saw Polanco in an MLB game I thought he'd never hit a HR in MLB.

Trading Cruz. At the time I didn't know enough about the 2 prospects in the deal. Same for the Berrios deal.

Just thought of another one I missed on. I thought it was a mistake to trade Tim Teufel. And maybe he would have been long term for us at 2B. We rally didn't get much for him though. But Steve Lombardozzi did just fine at 2B. And both got WS rings within 2 years.

Brant Alyea. Liked him as a part time player in Washington. Nice trade for the Twins sending Walters and Grzenda to Washington. Became really excited after the 1970 opener with a 4-4, 2 bomb 7 rbi performance. Had a good year in '70. Downhill from there - lost in the Rule 5 draft after 1971 season.

A couple more I had really high hopes for that had decent careers but a bit short of what I expected - Tom Hall and Jim Merritt,

Kennys Vargas. I was convinced he just needed regular ABs and he was getting a raw deal on some really bad teams. I still don't think I was 100% wrong about the latter.

Recently, and I'm surprised I haven't seen this one yet, I liked the Andrelton Simmons signing. I didn't expect much from him offensively but he was an absolute disaster in every way.

Here’s a few . . .

1. I thought Dyson would be a game changer for the bullpen

2.  I thought the Twins would sign Correa for around $300 mil.

3. My wife gave me a signed 2006 Twins baseball that had Morneau, Mauer Santana Liriano Nathan and Hunter. At the time I thought there would be at least 3 Hall of Famers and possibly as much as 5.

Looks like I will get to take #2 off the list and cheaper than what I had originally guessed.

I wanted to trade the farm for Troy Tulowitzki in 2015. He had a pretty good 2016 then injuries derailed his career.

I wanted to sign Madison Bumgarner. Little did I know he used up all of his valuable bullets in his 20s.

I thought Brian Dozier would be good to great for at least a couple more seasons after we traded him. Not go full Dan Uggla.

I thought Brian Duensing would be the perfect sweetener to any trade ?
