Minnesota Twins Sign Joey Gallo

Recommended Posts

Wow.  I know I'm not on payroll to make decisions for the Minnesota Twins, but wow.  This is...wow.  His OBP, dingers, and GG's, but hard pass 10 times out of 10.  We finally are rid of Sano.  I guess one year of Gallo trying to prove his worth is okay?  But is it?  I'll gladly eat crow on this.  But wow.  Not a signing I was expecting.  Nor wanting.

You may actually want to look up his performance numbers... they are TERRIBLE.

If we are looking to be terrible... this is the right move. Yikes.

Actually loook at his #s!!  He pulls the ball with hard contact more than anyone else in the league.  Yes he strikes out a ton yes.  But he takes a lot of walks and removing the guy in short right field and the SS having to stay on the left side of 2B those BA numbers if he hits similar to last season will ski rocket!

Is he a perfect fit no but he should be solid. Now I think a trade of Larnach is the play here.  He has value over Kepler to the small market teams who are more likely to be looking to shed some high payroll players.

Awesome! I mean....not for him but Eric Hosmer has been released by the red Sox. We now have the option to have another no hit left handed batter.

Quick!! Let the twins brain trust know!

Hosmer would have been a lot cheaper. I believe the Padres are on the hook for almost all of what he is still owed.

.263 career batter at target field. I’ll bet he hits above that average this year and has 40+ dingers.  A year from now everyone of you will want to sign him to a 3-4 year deal….

No, they'll all be mad that the cheap pohlads didn't sign him to a 100 million dollar contract when they had the chance because this franchise never gets the big free agents

Please - this is such terrible news I would rather have the blizzard back.  We have not even been without Sano for a year did we really need another bat to stir the air in the stadium.  I hate this more than any move this FO has made - bring back Shoemaker and put him in the OF.

Because they were better than him last year? Oh, wait.

100% this is about not looking cheap and praying Gallo is great. But who cares? It is one year. It solves nothing at all, other than blocking Wallner or Larnach or other players.

You are a smart guy can you make some sense of what Falvey and his minions are doing?

Boras absolutely owns this FO.  He manipulates the heck out of them.  So, if Gallo sucks, he gets 11 million on his way out of the league.  If he does decent, he will get a contract from someone else next year as there apparently is not an option built in.  He treats the Twins like the Yankees used to treat the KC franchise in the 50's and 60's, kind of like a farm team.  These Ivy League boys are real aces.

Does not check any of the boxes for what we need.  With the exception of Vazquez what a nightmare of an offseason so far and they are paying $11M for this.   The one positive in signing Gallo is the shift ban but that may not matter if he strikeouts half the time.   Honestly I would have rather kept Urshela 10 times over and for less money

The Twins spent the bulk of last year in 1st Place in the AL Central and their attendance tanked. The team was boring to watch was the general consensus amongst the population. Attendance is how the people voice their collective thoughts. As a diehard Twins fan I really struggled to watch the team because of the way the games were managed, the lack of fundamentals, the poor plate approaches, and generally shoddy, uninterested playing style. Now the Twins add Joey Gallo? Even if he hits 40-50 home runs, he will strike out 200+ times. And then we read he signed for $11 million? I would have been a little worried about adding J.D. Martinez, but now the Twins signed Gallo. Incredible. Clearly, Luis Arraez is out the door too. Bring back Miguel Sano.

I think they are hoping for a major bounceback, health from everyone, and to add players at the break. Also, trying not to look cheap.

But, he's here for 1 year. It's not what I'd do.....

Heard on KFAN that L.Neal was coming on to discuss the Twins FA signing.  Got home before he came on.  Ran to my laptop to check on TD who it was.  Imagine my surprise when I read it was Joey Effing Gallo.  My immediate reaction was anger and to throw up a little in my mouth.  I thought, maybe I was wrong.  So...I checked out the comments.  I'm sure glad I'm in the majority on this one...make that the 95% on this one.  Which is appropriate b/c I'm about 95% out of patience with Derrick Falvey....I'm not calling it Falvine anymore.  It's clear Falvey is calling the shots and doing all of the interviews where he spews one predictable cliche after another.

I knew nothing about Gallo, but was happy when I saw his signing.  Thought he was that power hitting first baseman who played for the Reds, or was it the Rangers.

Then I read the comments.  Had no idea he was Kepler good defensively, although I will have to see it to believe it.  After seeing what the Twins got for Cruz, I would like to see them sign a free agent bat every winter to restock the minor league system come July.  Maybe he can be that for the Twins.  If not, after reading the comments this move is scary.

Almost no players are signed and traded that same year. It is pretty rare.

I actually think it’s Lavine, but they purposefully keep us in the dark.

Lavine is the GM after all, what else would he possibly do besides manage the roster.

Wow, he is a career .166 hitter in high leverage situations.  Late in close games he hits .156.  Tie game he hits .179.  Just what this team needed...LOL

Checking Gallo’s leverage splits, he has a 77 tOPS+ in high leverage (meaning his OPS in high leverage is 23% worse than his overall stats).

It is normal for a player’s performance to be worse in higher leverage, but that seems a bit worse than expected. Kepler is only 3% worse in high leverage, Sano 8%.

Even if he bounces back to previous production, he's a Three True Outcomes guy (SO/BB/HR) and that is boring baseball.  Joe Pohlad needs to put his big boy pants on and insist that Marketing have some say.

... wait.  What if Marketing thinks HR is the best and only way to publicize the team.  Joe P has some housecleaning to do in that case.
