Minnesota Twins Sign Joey Gallo

Signing a gold glove corner OF with a big power bat is a useless signing?

Is it a franchise changing signing? No....is it useless? No

He is the 2nd best OF on our 40man right now. If the young guys can somehow stay healthy and live up to expectations than Gallo becomes expendable at the deadline or let him walk next year. But the young guys have not shown they can do that...if anything they've proven they can't. So go get a good defensive OF with upside to be a big bat too.

1 year removed from being a 5 WAR player.

I understand your argument, I really do.  I just can't wrap my mind around this.  Why not just keep Kepler, who is a better hitter (between two terrible hitters, but still) and is not much of a downgrade from Gallo defensively?  That's why I term it "useless."  It's the equivalent of going out and getting a defensive catcher when you have 5 Drew Butera's on your 40 man roster....it's redundant, expensive and illogical,   Gallo is getting to a point in his career where he is becoming unplayable outside of being a defensive replacement.   I expected him to sign somewhere like Kansas City or Pittsburgh for 1 year at $2M to try to rebuild his value.   It's just a bit shocking, I guess!

For adding a good defensive glove to your OF and a bat that has historically hit well at TF and has upside to him 30+ HR's.

Not every signing is going to be a franchise guy. They are banking on their young guys to be those guys....they haven't proven they can yet so until they do you bring in a veteran that can help the team win games. I believe that's the goal, right?

.263 in 15 games...wow

This HAS to be a RandBalls Stu thing...right? This can't possibly be correct, can it? We just got rid of one homer happy strike out guy, and now we get his left handed clone? So what if he's good defensively, WE DON'T NEED GALLO! I'm jumping on the bandwagon with Brock...I'm done with this FO. They must be insane. WTF we need this guy for, I have no idea. I'll take Kep any day over Gallo.

My only answer to your post is that Gallo has MUCH more upside with his bat than Kepler and yes he will SO but will walk a lot but also has much more power than Kepler. I don't think it's even really that close when comparing the bats?

Not sure what you think Kepler does that makes him a better hitter? Assuming you mean he SO less? But we could then just say Gallo grounds out to second less so between the 2 I'll take the one who hit's HR's every 16-20 AB's and take my chances.

He signs today and he's our 2nd best OF on the 40 man up to the minute.

You mean with all that amazing outfield depth that I have been reading about right here on TD that the FO has been accumulating and we have a surplus of - so many that they are also valuable trading assets..... and Joey Gallo is now the best of all of them not named Buxton? In what world? Perhaps just the one between your ears?

I’ve never seen an 11M MiLB deal. Not a bad player to stash in St. Paul.

Wait, he’s guaranteed a roster spot? That can’t be possible. Why not just do Chris Davis for 8M? Or Rob Deer for 4M?

Rob Deer is still alive?

I'm not saying he's a franchise changing signing. All I'm saying is he's our 2nd best OF right now and our team is better today than it was yesterday.

Umm 2nd best is a definite stretch. With the changes to the shift I would still consider Kepler to be better at this point.

I would literally rather see any other outfielder in the system get the at bats than Joey Gallo.

The young guys have upside and potential and until they reach that the Twins will just be spinning their wheels. Gallo is the 2nd best OF on the 40 man today IMO because the others have only proven they can't stay healthy. They brought in a proven commodity that can help win games now. Hopefully a couple of the young guys can prove they can be healthy, productive, big leaguers and Gallo is a luxory they can flip or let walk after the year. Until that's proven however its a good signing to help win games in '23.

How will they live up to expectations if Gallo is playing, and they aren't?

If he's even good, let alone great, he won't be back in MN. This solves nothing in the long run. Nothing.

They have proven they can't! They can't stay healthy so they can't be relied upon to help win games this year. Gallo is proven and most importantly available. Larnach hasn't' been for 2 years, Kirilloff hasn't been for 2 years.

All our young guys have proven to date is they can't stay healthy and cant be counted on for a full year.

In order tow win more games, you have to be someone who hits to some degree in the clutch or make productive outs.  Hmm, did you see the stats I posted twice in this thread?

The goal is to build a roster that can compete for a Pennant year in and year out.  This FO is desperate to take one more crack at making their Gray, Maeda and Mahle trades work before they all leave next season.

Sorry, we just disagree. IMHO, there is absolutely no reason to mortgage our future - whether it’s moving more young talent or taking away badly needed innings - to try to save Falvey, Levine and Rocco’s jobs.

The good news is that we will run this strategy up the flagpole.  If (or when) it doesn’t work, the firesale before the deadline will commence and the true rebuild will begin.

Boy, I can just imagine the analytics team all sitting around the room talking themselves into how Gallo is this or that (TF ave, no shift, good years before, etc.).

He can play CF? that's BS. You can stick anyone in CF, that doesn't mean he can play there. So FO please burn this out of your mind, so you don't make this disaster worse.

I have to say this FO is clueless. They can't make a good deal unless someone comes & slaps them along side the head and hand it to them & hope they don't drop it which sometimes they do.

Gallo is proven? Proven what? He has career .199 average and strikes out about 30% of the time. The Twins also have guys like Wallner, Celestino, and even Nick Gordon who can play outfield.

IMO the Twins are already in the midst of a rebuild and were last year too.

Your SP with the most wins was a rookie, your closer was a rookie, your leader in HR was a rookie. That sounds like a young team rebuilding.

Until they young guys show they can stay healthy and be productive no sense mortgaging the future. Maybe this is the year they prove that but it's not like this team is build around aging veterans.

I am not thrilled by the signing, but I get it.  It is a long-shot chance that he re-emerges and likes hitting to the short porch in Target Field.

Here is the stat on Gallo that blows my mind: In 2364 at bats, he has sacrifice flies.

How is that even possible??????
