Rumor: Dan Hayes on How the Twins Can Pivot this Off-Season

Okay, I'm not piling on Dan here, I love his work and you should subscribe to The Athletic. In a piece this morning, he quoted some Twins management and sources about what they plan to do in the wake of Correa going to the Giants. And a lot of it is rational, useful information. But holy Moses did this quote stick in my craw:

Quote

Alternatively, a team source said some current free-agent targets include veteran hitters Justin Turner, Joey Gallo and A.J. Pollock.

*uncontrollable gagging*

I mean, what? This is the team that traded Gio Urshela earlier this offseason. Justin Turner is a fine player, I guess, but he's the only name on that list that doesn't make me reel in horror.

My suggestion to Twins officials: if those are the names you're going to mention, don't mention any names.

Anyway, go read the piece, there's interesting information contained within that didn't make me dizzy and nauseous.

If Turner, that would be surprising. You're absolutely right. Why go after Justin Turner when they had Gio under team control for a perfectly reasonable amount? Maybe they think they can get Turner to sign for pennies on the dollars???  I don't know.

They probably traded Gio in hopes that the cash saved by trading him could go towards C4.  But now with the Giants involved, we have a hole and money to spend.  I'd prefer to play the young guys however.

Joey Gallo?  FFS...this FO sure likes their low contact, no position or corner outfiled players.  If they sign him, I will root against this team.  What a joke.  Where will Turner play?  Probably a good clubhouse guy.  AJ Pollock?  again, now we will have what?  8 corner outfielders.  The only outfielder I would even consider is Bientendi, as he is actually a good player. If this is who they are looking at, gut this team and start over.

This FO man.....If the following is true, as quoted from Hayes' article, then why trade Urshela in the first place?  It's just ridiculous and further proof that the FO, I'm sorry, just doesn't have a plan whatsoever.

"Turner could provide the Twins with several important characteristics, notably a right-handed hitting third baseman to pair with Jose Miranda who could provide valuable leadership in the clubhouse. "

Twins must have really believed they were going to get Correa to have gotten rid of Gio.  Probably had Farmer pegged as the third basemen spelling Correa on occasion at short.  Guess they should have waited as now they either need a SS or third baseman in Turner to make things work.

Lewis and Lee have never been more important to the Twins future than right now.  Really need both of them to step up into roles that will help this team now and in the future.

They already have Gallo on the roster, he just spells his name Wallner.

They had a cheaper version of Turner. They traded him to give 3B to Miranda full time. Pollock? Ugh. They have better on the roster.

This is my point.....you can have CC and two rookies, or you can have these three. I know which I prefer.

Just dumb, really dumb.

Gallo sucks...period.  I would rather have them sign Butch Husky than Gallo.

It's incompetence. It's not like Urshela couldn't have been traded after they signed Correa. All they had to do was tender him a contract. He's easily worth what he's going to get in arbitration.

He turned down 13MM.......and passable is the high point, but sure, he's passable.

I'd rather have him than Cellistino or Kepler out there. As long as it's a 1-2 year deal, give him $15 million then. We have nothing else to spend it on anyway.

That was a weird article. It read like Hayes had been admonished recently, because Hayes seemed to defer to "other" plans. What plans? I guess we will just be patient and wait to see what transpires before Opening Day. The article was comical.

What is not comical is that the Twins strung out this idea that they wanted to sign Correa. I cannot accept that neither Boras nor Correa ever communicated any guidelines to let the Twins know what the boundaries of a long term contract would need to include in order for Correa to sign. Lindor, Seager, others signed recently were a part of that picture. It would have been the same if the Twins had repeatedly stated their desire to sign Aaron Judge for something like 5/$225M. I found it hard to understand why the Twins didn't just wish Carlos Correa well on his next contract and thank him when the numbers were clear. I'm all good that Correa is now a Giant but I'm less of a fan of Falvey due to the process followed in the debacle that played out in the last few months.
