Signing Carlos Correa- Just Because You Can Doesn't Mean You Should...

Some of the best advice you will ever get- just because you can doesn't mean you should. Is it disappointing to see a great talent go elsewhere ABSOLUTELY. For the the long term health of the franchise is it for the best? Probably. A Shortstop whose value primarily comes from his defense will not age well. Paying Carlos Correa 27+ Million in 2032 is going to leave an ache similar to me taking down 7 cups of eggnog at the company holiday party.

A huge piece no one seems to want to ever mention about Carlos Correa is that he has played a limited amount of baseball for someone to feel comfortable about his longevity. He has played more than 110 games three times in 7 attempts (not including COVID year). That number is not going to improve with age. I'm not overly heartbroken over this. The money will not evaporate, there are other more responsible ways to acquire talent. Prime Correa has a handful of good/great years to come and his offense will suffer in the coming years, only Barry Lamar can stroke even 30 big boys at AT&T (this is the correct name of that field, I won't hear otherwise).

All I would like to do is to urge our Twins faithful to not be so shortsighted. We will pivot, we will compete. Like all our wise elders have told us... Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Buying a Ferrari and having to park it outside is stupid- we need more talent on the roster and this regime has proven it will spend, it will develop and it will be creative. It's a tough night in the Twin Cities but we will be ok, we swam with the sharks and survived and I'm confident we will do it again.

Great take. Part of me agrees completely. Then there is the other part, The part that has endured 0 playoff wins in my time watching the Twins (2006 was the first season I really started following with a passion). The part that has had to watch the likes of Pedro Florimon take the field at one of the most important defense positions on the field. That part of me would have loved to see the next portion of Twins baseball anchored by (hopefully healthy...) Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa. Future me is the one that can deal with the belly ache of those two potentially only playing 90-100 games a year and having no money in 2030.  I hope they spend some money and go after Rodon at this point. Don't spend big on Swanson, but hey if he signs I wouldn't be furious. All in all, it could be for the best but it certainly doesn't feel like it now.

I couldn't agree more with your post. 13 years is just too long for a 28 year-old shortstop. He is a great player and leader who has been fun to have around, but it would have been negligent to match the 13 year offer. Not much has changed, the Twins still a lot of money to throw around, and I believe they will spend it. It is hard to fault the front office for spending wisely rather than throwing away the future simply because a good free agent said he wanted to play here. I thought the 10 for 285 was more than a fair bar to set for a player like Correa. Was it high enough to land him? No, but was it high enough to show that you can compete for top free agents with the big market teams of the league? Absolutely.

Thanks Dodgers. May you enjoy watching the playoffs on TV next year. I was against the Correa signing from day 1 and I will ask again and keep asking; How do you pick a shortstop as the number 1 pick in the entire MLB draft and then sign to a ridiculous contract a player to play the same position who is not that much better than the shortstop they already had? 2023 will be a year for this team that is always called a "rebuilding" year instead of a disaster year. I think there was  a 5 year plan 5 years ago so now its time for another 5 year plan.
