Rumor: Yankees Discussing Trading for Twins Outfielders

Brock Beauchamp

Recommended Posts

Joel Sherman of the New York Post mentioned today that the Yankees are discussing trading for an outfielder with the Twins and Diamondbacks, possibly to stay under a luxury tax tier.

The Twins have a glut of outfield options currently in the majors and high minors. They need to find spots for the likes of Max Kepler, Nick Gordon, Alex Kirilloff, Trevor Larnach, and Matt Wallner. In case you're not good at counting, that's a lot of outfielders. More than three.

The Yankees system has a bunch of enticing names that surely interest the Twins. And we all know how well trading an outfielder to the Yankees has worked for the Twins in the past. But still, this deal could make a lot of sense for both teams if done well.

John Ryan Murphy was unavailable for comment as this story was published.

Whoa, let's not get excited as I am not sure that Kepler will bring anything of value back in a trade that moves the needle in a meaningful way.  The Twins need catching, a shortstop, bullpen pieces and a number one starter.  Does anyone have ideas about who the Yankees have to fill any of these roles, and who we might target?

I don’t like trading with the Yankees, they know what they are doing.  The Twins not so much.  Hicks for Murphy.

I liked the last trade quite a bit.

I was just spitballing in the other thread, but if Clark Schmidt is no longer being considered a starter by the Yankees, maybe he'd be available. Maybe the Twins add in another not-too-exciting piece if Schmidt still has prospect hype.

I'm very leery too. I don't see anything they may have that we need right now anyway. Just say no

Yankees have intriguing prospects. but kepler wouldnt command them. cant add additional player value to Yankees to get better prospects, as we do not have anything that would match their value. would have to take on a bad contract or two (Yanks desperate to move Hicks & Donaldson contracts)... hmmm if only someone had a proposal that would get the twins multiple top prospects while trading Kepler to NY and Twins taking on contracts to do it.   LOL....  again I know my proposal would NEVER happen, btu always fun pretending it would.

Although I pretty sure I'm one of the few. I'm stuck in the wait till the deadline on Kepler. The return isn't going to be that much less and it's maybe 50/50 that his value increases as a trade chip by then. If they are determined to trade him 1 vs 1 it doesn't look like there's much to work with. Kepler + $ and maybe our Comp A pick should get a higher quality prospect or a couple MLB regulars without taking on any of the bad contracts they are carrying right now.

Kirilloff, Larnach and Wallner aren't exactly Acuna, Harper and Judge.

The Twins don't have a "loaded outfield". Last year we had Jake Cave and Mark Contreras starting there half the time. Can we please stop pretending? Just because we wish it were true, doesn't mean it is.

That was a previous management. We traded with them last year and it wasn’t that bad

Yankees get Kepler and Pagan - Yankees get lefty hitting outfielder for their short right field porch. Pagan , eh cut.

Twins get Volpe, Rordvedt, Hicks & Donaldson and eat about $25mil. Volpe starting shortstop, Rortvedt lefty hitting good defensive catcher, Hicks is Buxtons injury replacement 60 games a year and Donaldson we send out to anyone.

I don't see the Yankees giving away a top prospect just to stay under the luxury tax threshold.

I also don't like the idea of bringing back former Twins. I get Donaldson and Hicks are in this deal to eat salary, but why Rortvedt too?

GLEYBER TORRES has been on the block ... that would work.. not likely, but is arbitration eligible for the next 2 years and have some star power coming up... Peraza would be awesome as a great glove and cost effective... not sure Correa is going to happen.. hope but...

Correa isn’t the thing that takes the TWINS over the top! He played for US in 2022…….how’d that work? Lewis played 10 days when Correa got nicked up/(Covid?) & everyone thought Lewis was the answer & Correa should get traded at the deadline because he’d never stay with us anyway. The Astro’s WON the Series the year after he left with a rookie SS and a STRONG STAFF!!! Spend the money on free agent pitching…….forget about trading the batting champion for Lopez…….sign Eovaldi - sign Kluber - sign Fulmer……..they add up to less than Correa’s $40 million.

Farmer is bridge to our youth SS. Forget about Correa & strengthen the team with available talent. Keep $ going forward to extend Gray or Maeda or Mahle if successful early in 2023.

None of those pitchers got the twins anywhere last year. By your logic, they aren't worth signing.

Ohtani didn't carry the Angels to the playoffs..... You don't think he's worth signing next year? I don't really understand the logic in saying player X was not good enough to carry a team, so he's not worth signing.
