Sean Murphy to the Braves

So weird to give up what's surely going to be a ton of equity for a guy who might be the third best catcher on your roster.

They must be pretty confident they can flip one of the others for an even better return?

Edit: Ok that didn't last long. Three team trade I guess. Contreras to the Brewers.

Nothing else being reported yet. Between Oakland, Atlanta and Milwaukee, seems like Milwaukee is the club that's most likely to get fleeced though.

Condemning the front office before it's even announced what Atlanta gave up to bring him in.  A little quick, no?

Is it a condemnation or just looking at what it would have taken? If I'm looking at this three-team trade, the A's get two MLB-ready starting pitchers and a position player with a good bat. (Plus a throw-in veteran catcher to hold the roster spot for the time being.)  By my very simple comparison, maybe we would have matched that haul with Simeon Woods-Richardson, Austin Martin, and, say, Cole Sands. And maybe the A's like the particular package they wound up with, in which case we'd have to beat it by a little bit.  Would our FO have pulled the trigger on that? Would I? Tough call.

Muller has been in the Braves organization since 2016. Solid but unspectacular in the minors with two brief appearances in the bigs. Salinas is an interesting prospect. Ungodly K numbers in A & A+ last year. Ruiz was one I had interest in when rumors floated we were discussing trades with San Diego last year. Tarnok may be destined for bullpen. Not a bad haul but nothing overwhelming.

Interesting that Oakland wouldn't want Contreras in return. I never quite know what they're doing out there, but Contreras/Langeliers sounds like a real nice catcher combo for the next 5 years if I'm Oakland.

The A’s have a nice catcher pipeline in the minors with Tyler Soderstrom and Daniel Susac. They always develop well in OOTP ?

That's fair. I could be completely misremembering, but I thought the last I saw on Soderstrom was that he was moving out from behind the plate more. And Susac is a couple years away which works perfectly for the A's since they'd be ready to trade Contreras and/or Langeliers by then! But if I'm misremembering on Soderstrom it makes more sense since he's just about ready to hit in the bigs.

That's exactly my thought.  How do the A's trade Murphy and the Brewers end up with Contreras.  With our need at catcher I'm wishing we slithered in there on that deal.  Unless I'm missing something, William Contreras seems like a pretty decent catcher with a lot of controllable years.

Yeah, my guess was wrong.

Did Atlanta just trade away a bunch of players AND the best catcher in the whole sloppy situation? I'd sure rather have the guy who's 24, controlled for five more years and just came off an +.800 OPS season.

Milwaukee definitely got the best of this thing. If I was Atlanta, I'd rather keep Contreras, than trade to get Murphy. It doesn't add up. It sure doesn't help us at all...I'd love to have Murphy or Contreras, but it's a pretty strange deal.

Wow, I love it when a FO sees a need & goes out there makes it happen when there seems to be no way.

Yeah with so many teams looking for catchers, the supply just got a lot smaller. The Twins needs to wake up! The price on the rest of available catchers just went up! If they had set the floor with Narvaez and got an upgrade from Jeffers. They could've made a killing on Jeffers.

There was a lot of talk from the experts on MLB Network radio saying that the Murphy trade was taking so long because the asking price was too high.

Looking at what the A's got back... I'm not so sure I understand what the experts were talking about.

I'm not sure what the As are doing, other than trying to have the lowest payroll.

Pina to Oakland as well.

You could be right. Not sure about Soderstrom’s status in real life. He’s also rated 30/80 as a catcher in the game so he’s probably not a defensive juggernaut in real life either.
