If they miss out on Correa, at this point I'd rather see them spend elsewhere (Rodon, Nimmo, a right handed bat). Dansby is fine, but I do not like his swing and miss in this lineup. And I feel like he might have peaked.

Yup. Tatis is a LF/DH now. He prefers SS but the Padres liked him in the OF at the end of 2021 while rehabbing a shoulder that has since been in a motorcycle crash. He wasn't amazing defensively at SS and they'll likely not resign Will Myers. 

 

They're set in RF with Juan Soto and CF Trent Grisham's defense is elite. Ha-Seong Kim is the real loser of playing time here unless they make other moves, like Cronenworth to 1B, and Kim to 2B.  Either way, I think the Padres like their depth.

I'd guess that offering a short deal would be the same as not offering at all.

He is becoming an increasingly bigger fish in an increasingly shrinking pond.

Yes, but remember in times of inflation, the same item which costs 300 million dollars today, will cost more in the future, simply due to inflation. Therefore, if a player wants 300 million dollars, it would be wise to back load much of the 300 million and to stretch the contract out as long as possible, since there is no interest being added to the remainder of the 300 million which is due to be paid down the road.

So you're the culprit? I dunno why, but I always suspected that it was a fellow Twins fan responsible for the Hot Wheels vending machines added to the lobbies of our local Jaguar dealerships.

I am wondering if Correa and Boras are asking too much or if the offers are lower than anticipated?   He may have to settle for another contract similar to last year's.  Twins should be offering two year $40million/year with an opt out after one.  Contract should not include a no trade clause.  Twins trade Correa at the deadline and offer to split the remaining amount due for 2023 ($6.667/million) as an incentive for the Yankees or Giants to take him.  Correa gets his money, possibly goes to WS and can be a FA again when there should be fewer Shortstops available and he still is only 29.  Hopefully Lewis (or Lee) is ready by this time.   I realize this is an expensive bridge to the future.

I think we could be in a position where we could offer him a long contract with opt outs every year.  Look - we have Lee and Lewis both as possible above average players at SS, and while I know the club takes the risk by offering opt outs that a player can elect not to take if they perform poorly, I think CC has the potential of being good in most areas in play.  I wouldn't mind having him for a year, or 6 years - but no matter how good he is today, I'm not sure I'd sign anyone for the 11 year contracts I've seen signed this year.  Too much risk when you have potential SS starters in the wings, even if they are not CC.

The dominos are such that if Correa does sign with the Giants, Crawford becomes a good trade target and the Giants will probably pay $8-10mil of his salary. 

Farmer and Crawford would be projected to be about a 3 WAR SS platoon. That's a good deal for $12-14mil (their combined salaries in this scenario) for one season.

We may even be able to get Joey Bart, who is allegedly on the trade block, packaged with Crawford if we give up some value, such as Luis Arraez. (FWIW, I heard an analyst on a non-denominational podcast say that the Giants seem to be one of the best fits for Arraez)

This scenario specifically affords a large SP contract...someone like Rodon perhaps?

PS - I am completely aware how unlikely all this is, but it does have the potential to match up.

I would rather like to get Crawford and Bart on the Twins. I'd rather get CC, but Crawford is a good player, if old. And Bart? Worth a shot for sure. Was once THE GUY in the minors. I'd want another minor league player for Arraez in that deal, but I'd settle for just those two, I think.

Agree on all points. But that's not a bad Plan B if it needs to go that way.

For the large market teams they have to take the luxury tax hit as even payments, so it makes some sense to just pay the same amount every season.

Sure, but it also makes sense that if you think a guy is going to be good for 8 years, to sign him for 11 and spread the money out. Pretty sure that's what teams that signed the huge contracts this week did.
