I am still mystified - we finished under 500 with Correa getting the highest salary in 2022.  Now we want to make sure he keeps getting a high salary, but we have done nothing to make the team around him better so we think that having one overpaid superstar on the team will make a difference - check on the Angels.

Agree 100%. I don’t see the point. I’m not a metrics guy so I’m sure someone will tell me how wrong I am but I watched probably 70% of the games last year and he was underwhelming until late in the season when we were already toast. Plus, I have no idea why he’d want to be in MN. We aren’t close to seriously competing. Signing him would be like throwing some expensive rims on a Tercel

I was going to say it looks like the Twins or the Giants unless a mystery team jumps up. Looks like the Padres might be that mystery team.

IF I'm Correa and it was the Twins or Giants, and the offers are the same or really close, I'm choosing the Twins for a variety of reasons. But if I'm him, I'd be looking at the Padres with real interest.

The Twins initial offer WAS HIGH and REMAINS creative as it allows Correa opt out possibilities. But as these things always play out, initial offers are just that. Did the Turner signing set the market? I'm not so sure. The Philies basically are doing the whole "Bonilla" deal on the short term by paying him a "retirement" check after he's done in 7-9yrs. So despite the total $ involved, the AAV is lower. The Twins seem more focused on higher AAV but 9-10yrs and forget some retirement payout. And I think that's smart for them.

I still come back to the proposal Nick laid out a week or so ago that included opt outs and a potential guaranteed $330M. Absolutely crazy $, but granting Correa the power to look again at the market in 4yrs after earning $160M at that point, should he wish to do so. I know the financial numbers just sound CRAZY, but if the Twins opening offer was in the $280-290M area, which I believe it was, the long game to reach a $330M deal is another $4M per year.

IF the Giants or Padres offer something close to 10yrs and $330M, and the Twins find a balance between their initial offer and that $330M mark, say $315-320, with opt outs, it would have to fall in the Twins favor wouldn't it? He wants to stay, the $ is still guaranteed, and he would STILL have the opportunity to opt out after 4yrs and look for something more at 32yo.

It's in the Twins court to offer the best deal. And I KNOW NOTHING about these ridiculous numbers being tossed around. NO CLUE what the Giants or Padres might throw out. But if the Twins were in the ridiculous $300-320-ish range and still offering opt outs, I would think Correa and Boras would jump at that.

Correa has only played in 78% of games since his debut due to injuries - most concerning, his back. Whereas Bogaerts has played in 92% of games since debut, and Swanson 90.5%.

Correa would be amazing - he's a star, nuff said.

Bogaerts is the safest play & would provide the most value on-field, but it feels like he's signing elsewhere.

Swanson is a fantastic fallback, even if he strikes out a lot - still a ton to love about him.

Reality check - for the Twins, it's either get a top SS now... or pray on prospects becoming the next Correa/Bogaerts/Swanson. There's really not much else coming down the SS pike the next couple winters. Any of the top 4 signing with the Twins is a huge win. And if the Twins can get Swanson + Bassitt for the same cost as signing Correa, even better. If all four sign elsewhere, then hopefully they break old habits and sign Rodon + Andrus... if Rodon is even still available.

Take note that no reporters/sources have ruled out the Twins on any of the 3 available SS so far, and we're in the thick of it right now. So the Twins are not just pretending to be in the running - they appear to actually have a shot. Reason for optimism.

This team doesn't lead the division for the majority of the season without Correa.  The primary reason the team fell apart was because of injuries. Plus, I doubt they sign Correa and are done.

I don't believe the Cubs are out for one second. If there is a 'mystery team' that is the one.

And actually... the fact that there has not been mention of a 'mystery team' ... which is usually leaked by Boras to get teams biding against themselves.... tells me that there is a real strong existing competition to keep Boras happy... which is of course VERY bad for the Twins

You might be right. And you also might have exposed yet another way that MLB is cutting it's own throat and basically making the entire league a 5-6 team or so competition.

Maybe 5-6 competitive  teams is misguidedly just what they want

We still have a chance to be saved by the Giants!

After Bogaraets it almost seems sure Correa will get somewhere around $280 - 300 million over 8 years.  These numbers are getting insane (which is why I am starting to hope for a hard cap, and that may happen when 20 owners or more figure out they cannot compete with the big market teams) It is just a question of how big a penalty check the owner is willing to cut.

I would still like the Twins to be in on Correa,  otherwise you are asking the fan base to buy into that either Lee, Lewis or Miller will be able to do the job in the next two years. And if you expect Julian to be your secondbaseman, the shortstop is going to have to be elite defensively.  The good news is if we do not get a SS, we will have plenty of money to spend on pitching (and we had better use it).

I agree.  This fascination with Correa is excessive.  Now with Boegaarts signing with Padres it's Dan'bury, Correa, and whatever.  I will probably be one of the very few that will be disappointed if we do sign Correa.  Spending that much for one player on an otherwise mediocre and boring team seems senseless when you have so many holes and question marks on the team.

Inflation or not, the prices won’t be going down. As usual the owners will past the cost down to us, the consumer. And if that makes you NOT want to sign big time free agents, too bad, because the owners all want to compete financially against each other. So when other teams sign these players and mark up prices for consumers, the Twins will too, just to keep pace on that end of the business.

Listening to MLB Network radio on SiriusXM right now and they just talked with Jon Morosi. Talked Correa and neither the hosts or Morosi even mentioned the Twins in relation to Correa. It was all Giants. Conventional wisdom, not shockingly, seems to be shifting heavily towards Correa to San Francisco.

He didn't start to hit and be the Correa we expected until we started to go downhill.

After the Twins signed Correa last year... I've given up on the guessing game. It's just to hard to predict what the Teams are thinking and what the players are thinking without having a clue what either is thinking.

With that said... I'm saying Correa to the Giants... Swanson to the Twins. Now I will sit back and wait for that to happen.

After signing Bogaerts, Padres overloaded with middle infielders.  Make the trade for Kim.  He is a solid SS and only $7m/year for next several years.  Spend the dollars saved by not signing a $35m+/year SS on higher quality pitching.

I don't know that they're overloaded with middle infielders. I think most in the sport believe they're moving Tatis to the out field. I think they view their middle infield as Bogaerts and Kim with Cronenworth playing more 1B this time. I wouldn't mind them calling about Kim if they don't sign Correa, but I don't think the Padres view themselves as overloaded with middle infielders.

Signing correa's great , but at a six year contract I heard it would be at least 32+ million. I know that's less than last year but it eats up a lot of money for players. A ten year contract better come with opt outs for the team.  10 years is a long time. It might be best to go 8 years I've heard  about 29 million a year. They would save us 6 million a year , enough for a relief pitcher. But I do think overall he's good for the team.

I think I’d only want Swanson if he does a short deal, maybe just to hit the market again next year.

The guy is on the verge of contending for the league strikeout crown. I think his bat will age poorly.

I agree that it's hard to say if Correa is a linchpin or a bad idea, given 2022, when the Twins were in the hunt until September without Correa playing his best. I understand that with him there are clubhouse intangibles, as if he's determined the rest of his career to atone for his cheatin' heart. I'm more disturbed to hear that the FO is thinking that trading the 2022 batting champion makes sense. Arraez is an on-base machine. Bottom line for me is that Correa is a meaningful addition but won't turn the tide by his lonesome. The most meaningful acquisition is probably the new trainer if he can keep players healthy.

Correa   4 years  150 Million,  , last thing i want are these 10. year deals, its Insane,,  Best offer take it or  CYA

What is the purpose of putting a non-competitive offer on the table? Just a middle finger salute to the player and to the world?

Yeah ... I'm not certain that if Swanson remains, maybe just go with what we have?

Tatis will opt out after this year ... They aren't dealing anyone unless they get pitching back.

Not true at all. He was very good in May (actually, the last series in April too) and June as well. When the Twins were in 1st place. He was also a clubhouse leader and strong defensively.

Your logic makes no sense. Are you suggesting that the Twins could have held the division as long as they did without Correa?

The fact that he finished the year strong in September while the Twins fell out of contention only highlights that the Twins collapse was not due to him. (Hint: It was due to injuries)

Again - this team wouldn't have been a contender without his production, fielding and leadership.

Do you mean Machado? I don't remember Tatis having opt outs, especially not this early in his deal. I could be misremembering, though.
