Does the Degrom signing affect the Twins chances on Rodon?

Now that DeGrom is confirmed to be off the board, according to Heyman, the Mets are now in on his market. Given the Mets owner and the fact they desperately need rotation help I feel like it's entirely realistic the Twins are going to get entirely priced out of the market. If that's the case does it make sense for them to go after another pitcher that's left? I feel like it's pretty unlikely the Twins will get Rodon at this point.

Personally, I'd look for a trade, if I could ... but I'd be looking for high end BP arms about now. I never thought signing a front end FA starting pitcher was ever realistic for the Twins because it never seems to be realistic.

This may free up money for other needs then.

Agree.  Get good BP arms 1st.  Id be shocked if deGrom makes 20 starts.

I think the Twins could and should sign Rodon, regardless if the market comes in stronger than estimated.

With as low of payroll as they have right now, if they don’t sign a big name, big contract, front of the rotation starter, they never will.

my guess is “never will”, but my hope is this is the year

Despite talent, age, results, and potential, I felt Rodon would be similar to Gausman and Ray last year. I thought 4 or 5yrs and about $25 would get it done. Logic would state that's very fair and within reason. Maybe even an opt out after the 3rd year on a 5yr. But with the Dogers interested and now the Mets, we just might see $30M per and not only am I unsure about return vs $ over time being slanted poorly, history would say the Twins FO just wouldn't take that risk, even with the $ available if they strike out on Correa.

I WANT Rodon, and I wanted him last year. So did the Twins. And they wanted him at the trade deadline but the Giants held on. I just don't see it happening at $30+ M.

I would like an addition as good as what we have, at least, for depth and opportunity. And there are arms I like out there. I'm not sure about trades as the Twins, while still having a solid system in place, have already traded away a lot. With or without Correa back, I think I would concentrate on the rest of the lineup, and add at least one quality BP arm, maybe two if it works, and worry more about the lineup and the pen and trust in the rotation arms and young depth on hand. Again, someone added the equivalent to what we have might be prudent and smart. But with no Correa, and Rodon probably costing that much, I shift to bats, bullpen, and another SP that is SOLID.

The way MLB works now - BP is the key.   I love the Verlander style of SP, but not at 40, but his role is going out and 4 - 5 inning starts means lots of BP arms - quality arms to fill half the innings pitched.  Rodon's health is an issue (as an aside - good luck keeping deGrom healthy) and there just needs to be a new strategy to pitching composition.

No worries. We have Pagan and Megill so we are all set.

If the FO had any plans to try and sign Rodon (IMO a big if) I'd guess the Mets would out bid them. IDK if they'll pivot to another pitcher. Maybe Bassit? I'd guess they'll spend more on the offense if they're priced out the pitching market.

I don't believe the Twins have any realistic chance, and maybe not even any interest, in signing Rodon. They would get out bid in a heartbeat. I think Bassitt is a possibility, but even he's probably more than they would spend on a FA starter. I think they're gonna roll with the starting pitchers they already have, and focus on a SS and a catcher. There's always the chance they make some kind of trade.

With the De Grom contract, I suspects that Rodon gets around $40 mil for 5 years. De Grom has had forearm problems the last 2 years, which frequenly leads to TJ surgery. I don't think the Twins are going anywhere in that market. Pay for 5 years on a starter and have him out or limited for 2 years.

I also think other free agents, especially re-think their positions and salaries wind up going higher across the board. If they want a starter, time to see who is in the $20mil per market. The other free agents, as far as shortstops go, I would aim towards Swanson at $25mil per for 7 years.

If I were to write a response, this would be what I would say word-for word (except for the catcher part).
