Not sure how I feel about this yet....he played 98 games at SS, are they not signing a SS? Seems pricey just to be a utility guy, that's my worry here.

Bleacher Report is referring to him as a 3B.  I don't know, in good faith.  I guess he could play either, based on how things play out with Correa or another FA.  Could also free up 3B for Lewis in two years.

I'm not going to judge it yet.  He's 32 and the Twins could use someone with a decent glove to backup SS who isn't a complete hole in the lineup.  He's right handed as well if they were planning a Miranda/Arraez/Farmer 1B/3B platoon type thing.

If Miranda isn't playing third, his value is pretty low as a DH (Arraez at first, I assume).

Would anyone believe that? Sorry, should have not ...

It's a weird move by the Twins though. Farmer is on the decline while Urshela is getting quite consistent.

With this crowd … who couldn’t even tell RandBall Stu’s article about licking their lockers clean was satire … you never know. ? People are pretty quick to jump to the worst possible conclusion.

But I’m not sure how Farmer fits in, unless he’s flipped for something else (hopefully)

Interesting. A placesetter shortstop, perhaps. (Better than moving Ushela to the position for twice the money)

Now we know why they protected Casey Legumina. Legumina...one of many on the 40-man that never made the Twins!

What will be the year when a third of the Reds roster is made up of former Twins prospects?

Ill be happy to hang on this island alone, but I like it. The only reason I didn’t care for moving Urshela, was because since we got him, I wanted him to be that super utility infielder that could actually hit. The Twins had a great run having such a player until a couple of years ago. Farmer can be that guy.

This team’s getting a real SS or their payroll will top out at 110M, and I don’t believe that will occur.

Not sure why Bleacher Report listed him as a 3B, this is the Twins getting a depth SS piece. Makes sense to me. Doesn't stop them from bringing in a top SS, but now they have 1 other guy on the roster who can play SS at a major league talent level. That's a piece this team was going to be missing heading into opening day. They filled that for a 25 year old that not many people really understood why he was on the 40-man.

It is fun to have people already making every move out to an indictment on the whole offseason in November, though. With the Twins doing basically nothing before the lockout last year we had to wait so long before people freaked out about depth moves and acted like they were planning on using Tim Beckham as their opening day SS. I look forward to getting a full offseason of overreactions this season. Should be fun.

This is insurance for the infield, as the Twins have no functioning shortstop and a big question mark at third base. I don’t think this signifies anything.

Are you kidding???? It signifies EVERYTHING!

A bridge to Lewis/Lee? $3M less than Gio and certainly a more established shortstop. Not a “go big” move.

I sure hope not. That would be an awful to play for maybe when. We don’t know when either will be ready.

Having this guy to play SS now and evaluating that Lewis or Lee will be ready to play SS by late 2023/early 2024 is one possibility. It doesn't have to be the only scenario they plan for.

The Twins haven't seemed to want to play Polanco, Gordon or Urshela at SS (Gordon a little more than the others, in keeping with the utility role he's moved into.) Not debating what they should want, just observing what they seem to want.

If those guys aren't shortstops in the organization's view, then they didn't have a shortstop ready to open the season. Having Farmer and the future potential of Lewis or Lee gives them more of a plan than they had yesterday, without that needing to be THE plan.

I'll miss Urshela on the Twins, but I actually feel better about that trade in sequence with this move. Plus the cost in trade, Legumina, was one of the more puzzling 40-man adds, so they just made a little roster room.

Could be the Twins being real about their chances of signing a top SS. It might also be a signal that they have no desire to sign a top SS and are waiting on Lewis. Which I don’t disagree with either.

The Twins have about $60m in open payroll for 2023. If they can’t find a good shortstop with that money, the entire lot of them should be fired.

I think this trade means that the Twins don't have any intensions of signing a top SS in the free agency market this year. If they were seriously considering signing Correa or Bogearts, it is highly unlikely that they trade for Farmer as a backup when he himself makes nearly $6MM.
