Correa confirms Opt-out

Per ESPN, Correa is opting out after a strong season and at "the peak of his career".  No surprise whatsover, but there it is.

He also is careful not to burn bridges with Minny, indicating he enjoyed his season and is open to returning.  Just get a Brinks Truck lined up.  (OK, I added that last part).

Please show me a quote where Carlos directly says he is opting out. The last thing I read was that Correa wanted to get together with the Twins real soon and have serious talks. He also said he wanted to be a Twin for many years. Many writers have sloppily taken speculation by other baseball columnists and reported it as fact (horrible journalism with no evidence).

Thanks, that’s the first direct tie I’ve seen. I take Falvey saying they’d discuss at the proper time and a few there signs I’ve see from DF to mean, go ahead Carlos into free agency and we’ll do our best.

I really think if the Twins were serious, they could have signed him by now. I’m guessing C4 is going to opt out due to not receiving the attention from the Twins, the seriousness and aggressiveness a team should have if they really badly want a player. I’ve followed the Twins way too many years to know how they operate.

I wonder if the Twins put together a 10 year deal where it's $20M/yr PLUS $15M/yr in incentives (for achieving the kinds of numbers you expect to receive from a $35M/yr guy), if it would fly. You've got a long term "base" price which is somewhat reasonable, and a payscale that reflects the type of year the player has.  I realize Boras will not go for such a thing, and it only takes one team to throw out a bigger 10 year all guaranteed offer, but if CC truly loves it here, that's probably the best sort of deal he can expect. Heck they could toy with the incentives and even make it the highest (possible) contract ever to appease Boras (and the players' union). I don't see it happening, but I think it's about as "creative" as I can get. Unless you get Andersen Windows (or other local company) to sponsor the contract (CC gets a AW patch on his jersey, AW gets a "now batting 3rd, brought to you by AW, Carloooooooos Correa" announcement at each AB).

Correa made this statement at the end of the season regarding his decision on opting-out.  "“I want to make sure that my son and my family are taken care of,”  https://www.twincities.com/2022/10/05/carlos-correa-with-long-term-contract-in-mind-hints-at-opting-out-of-deal-with-twins/

While I understand Correa has every right to opt-out, IMO this statement is extremely disingenuous and further tarnishes his overall character (not that this will stop some team from signing him).

C'mon, man - the $60M+ you have already earned plus the $70M for the next 2 season should be more than enough to take care of your family. Get real!

I had the same thought!  Many families may not even be able to put food on the table soon or even afford the "luxury" of taking their kids to a regular Twins game.

Besides the money I am sure he sees the writing on the wall that this team will NEVER EVER be a contender and players of his caliber want to be with a team that has the goal of WS or bust!

We are in the league of making the playoffs and fine with one and done.  At least they can brag about winning a wild card spot or winning the division in the weakest division ever.

I think he is talking about generational wealth for his family.   Good luck to him.  As much as I want him to remain a Twin, he can lock up millions more in FA this offseason.  He should do that.  I am glad he was here last season.  It definitely turned the FO offseason around last year when they got this deal done.  I do hope the Twins end up signing him.  but I think Pushing Lee up to AA is a way to say he is almost ready thus we don't want someone to keep his spot long term.  Plus Lee probably is almost ready to come up and play SS.

If the Twins wanted him that badly, the deal would have been done by now. That he has now opted out means, he isn't coming back, despite everyone 'saying all the right things publicly'. As for the now too cliche-ridden statement about having to take care of family...yeah, its not a good look. How many millions and millions are needed to achieve that in the real world?  I would be happier if these guys would just be honest and say...I'm chasing the biggest contract any owner (fool) is willing to pay for my services.

I enjoyed watching him play. His throwing alone was worth tuning in for me. It’s too bad we didn’t put together a pitching staff to go with him.

It wasn't just the pitching. It was a little bit of everything and that falls on the front office. Giant holes with the bats at the catching position, being awful with RISP, losing all of those one run games to the Guardians, somehow keeping Pagan on the roster the entire season, etc.

Let's not forget that Correa was very slow out the gate and then hit .175/.264/.350 in July. Also, he was absolutely pathetic with RISP and 2 outs (.191/.292/.214). He did finish the year strong and showed some strong numbers, but as a fan, this year definitely wasn't worth $30MM to me. I'm also someone who will never like him because he's a cheater and gave some pretty BS answers during that press conference but that's just me.

On to Brooks Lee and Royce Lewis! Those guys are going to be studs

Sure, I get it. Every other top free agent shortstop will get a significantly better contract than that, but Correa should do the Twins a favor because it's personal to us.

I agree with that. I loved watching his rocket arm make throw outs at 1st and turn double plays where other players wouldn't be able to get the runner.

Hate to see Correa go. Was great addition to twins. Now it looks like we are in full rebuild ??it’s going to at least be 3-4 years before twins will be division contender-Cleveland/white sox are better and royals tigers will be much better next years. I’ll still support the twins but looks a last place 65-70 win season looms ahead

I enjoyed Correa's time with the team, and I appreciate the Pohlad's taking a shot. However, if this past season proved anything, it showed that the money could be better spent elsewhere to improve the roster.  Hopefully the funds will be made avail;able to bring in some talent to shore up the holes.
