Article: Time to Put Pelf on the Shelf

Recommended Posts

I don't disagree that we normally scrape the barrel for pitchers or that Pelfrey should improve throughout the season and going into next season but what upside does Pelfrey have? Even when healthy and at his very best he is a good fourth starter. That kind of guy is available every off season so why would the Twins want to get locked into Pelfrey for multiple years?

Eh, I said two years because that's what I think it would require to get him (as it does most 30-ish year old pitchers).

If you can get him for one year, you do it.

When I read this a month ago, it felt premature.

But, today-If you view his game logs, you really don't see any improvement in results. There should be a positive trend by now.

I really think it's now time to move on Pelfrey. Give him the choice of either taking a DL break or assignment to Rochester.

Maybe if I were in Ryan's chair, I might want to wait one or two more turns through the rotation to see which of Gibson, Worley or Albers is most deserving of taking the rotation spot. However, I am in my chair, so I'll accept any of the three.

I believe Pelfrey offers a higher upside than most other options in the Twins rotation this year and I was all for letting him retain his spot while struggling at the start of the season, but he should be trending upward and isn't. Enough time has passed to conclude this approach just isn't working.

We need Gibson to pitch well tonight for anything to happen though.

Why? He got shelled in his last start, pitching well tonight would only further confirm his inconsistancy to TR. Maybe we need him to tank again, consistantly bad might suffice......seems to work for the rest of them.

I was shocked that Pelfrey was "ready" to pitch at the beginning of the season. I had predicted that he wasn't going to start the season. Well he clearly is not ready. He is not strong enough to carry through more than 90 or so pitches effectively.
