With Louie Varland getting added to the 40-man in a couple of days, someone has to go.  There don't seem to be any candidates for transfer to the 60-day injured list, so someone will be designated for assignment and presumably put on waivers.  I picked some names from the roster listed at MLB.com, for the poll.  The idea is to predict who will, not who you think deserves it, though that's interesting to discuss too.  Anyone want to weigh in on your reasoning?

I don't deny that it's ghoulish if you look at it a certain way, but the players themselves understand it's a part of the business.  I'm certainly not laughing at any of them (despite the moniker I tacked on to Pagan) over their plight.

But it occurred to me that the choice isn't totally clear cut.

At first I thought Megill because he's been pretty consistently bad for several games now.  Then I looked at the roster and remembered that Davis was recently picked up and everyone assumed he would be only temporary, except he had an auspicious debut with the Twins.  Sanchez is the only starter in the list I gave, and since they're making room for a starter, maybe he goes.

I think, in the end, that it's Jewell, because he's doing about as badly as Megill in recent appearances, except he's putting up those lousy numbers against AAA opposition.

But I would be unsurprised if it's any of them.  Some of it comes down to whoever the FO thinks will pass through waivers the easiest.

All of which means... I have a handful of other candidates in mind, if ever they decide to... Free Evan Sisk™. :)

It should be Jewell, he never made it to MLB level prior to us picking him up this year, and since we got him he has done nothing of value in AAA.  Megill may be struggling but for much of the year he put up decent numbers.  I looked and he is on pace to match the most amount of innings he has pitched as a pro, back in 2019.  It is fully possible he has hit bit of a wall on the innings.  It may be only at about 51 innings, but last year he only got about 38 innings, none in 2020, 60 in 2019, 38 in 2018, 28 in 2017.  He really hit his skid when he got to inning about 43.

He is not the go to guy, but I bet a team would snatch him up, where Jewell we would never even realize if he gets picked up.

Looks like the equation has suddenly changed. Do you think he might end up just getting called up as the 27th man for the doubleheader now?

The MLBTR article seemed to state with some assurance that he'll be in the rotation for the remainder of the season, or at least long enough to prove himself worthy/unworthy, after which he might stay in the pen.  And I don't remember the exact rule about the player added for a doubleheader having to be on the 40, now that today's game is postponed.  We'll just have to wait and see how events play out.  (Which is contrary to the spirit of the OP, which I wrote in a big fat hurry, but oh well.)

That said, nice touch with "all of the below".

I do believe that the extra player for a doubleheader has to be on the 40-man roster. This would mean that when Varland is added, someone will have to be taken off the 40-man roster or sent to the 60-day IL. There really isn't a candidate for that. The other choices would include Jewell and Strotman in St. Paul or my personal favorite, a DFA of Caleb Hamilton coupled with the recall of Mark Contreras. If/when outfielders Buxton and Larnach are fit for play, it would appear that Contreras has no use on the 40-man roster. Currently, I don't see much use for Caleb Hamilton anyway.

Calibration is important. It is how you know the radar guns are right.

That said, as much as we'd all like to dfa the rally money, i'm pretty sure that won't actually free up a roster spot.

I myself will put in a waiver claim on any rally money they opt to Designate For Assignment.  Assign it to me.

Miranda still has options.. Oh this is a serious poll…?  I vote for Megill, then.

I said in the offseason that the only two arms I trust to pitch in Yankee Stadium were Jhoan Duran and Taylor Rogers, and that maybe we should use start using old fashioned metrics again when building our pitching staff? Since Megill was the most recent to fail Megill can be shown the door. Someone else will pick him up and players know it’s a business yada yada

Mahle? Are the Twins going to even try put him back on the mound this year or let that shoulder fully heal?

Maybe.  Tomorrow the medical staff could know more, and it being the shoulder, it could well be bad news.

maybe, but then whose 28-man roster spot does Varland take? Moran? (can he be optioned again?)

I assume Pagan and Sanchez are both out of options, so I would lean toward it being one of them.

Moran cannot be optioned again as his latest call up was his 5th.
