Bullpen reinforcements

Recommended Posts

I would like to see Emilio Pagan DFAed. The Twins have managed to accumulate some interesting arms in St. Paul right now.  Which of these four players would you most like to see in the Twins’ bullpen down the stretch?

 2022 stats:

Brad Peacock, 46.2IP, 54/20 K/BB, .222BAA, 1.93ERA, 1.24WHIP

Jake Jewel, 44.1IP, 50/15 K/BB, .179BAA, 2.44ERA, 0.99WHIP

Jovani Moran (not great in 2022, but check out his minors career numbers), 245IP, 366/119 K/BB, .175 BAA, 2.87 ERA, 1.10WHIP

Not a reliever, but maybe an option…

Louis  Varland, 116IP, 134/41 K/BB, .246BAA, 3.18ERA, 1.30WHIP

As long as Baldelli uses Pagan early or mid game, in VERY low leverage situations, I don't mind if he sticks until the end of the season. He's proven time and again, that he can't be trusted in a close game, or with the game on the line. That being said, if he gets DFA'd, I'd be ok with that too. No matter what, I can't see him on this team next season.

Don't discount bad ERA in AAA as an advancement killer. Both Strotman and Henriquez have been better coming out of the pen as of late down there, and both are on the 40-man.

Smeltzer could still dazzle as a long-relief arm lefty

Moran just can't be sent up and then back again, so when he comes up he stays for the rest of the season.

Dobnak, Ober, Winder and Maeda may cause some issues, as all are on the 60-day and roster moves need to be made.

I'm not crazy about any of those above, Pagan might work out if goes earlier & longer. Earlier reduces the leverage & longer could force him to tone it down to pitch longer which in turn it help his control. He has the stuff to be good.

We have a lot of proven quality long relief candidates so I wouldn't want to go to any unproven or reject short relief.

In September they can carry 14 pitchers.

I would expect Ober, Winder, Maeda and Dobnak to start with a rehab assignment in AAA. Since none are on that assignment yet I wouldn’t think any of them would be ready on September 1. Moran would be my addition.

They still need to find spots for Maeda, Ober and Winder including two 40 man roster spots. One of the 40 man roster spots would be Jewell. The other probably Pagán. A third spot on the 28 would be needed if by some miracle all three made it through a healthy rehab. In that case Bundy or Archer may be the next to go.

Of course all of this really won’t really matter because someone currently on the roster will get injured (or maybe already is injured in Mahle).

Guys on the 40-man bubble include Cave, Beckham, Strotman, Jewell, Hamilton. So really no problem there in the short-term. Hoping Garlick does come back.

Yes, can the Twins add one or two pitchers when rosters expand to 28. If two, they are in heaven.

Moran needs to come back up and stay. But if Winder or Ober become starters, will Bundy or Archer go to the pen, that is the BIOG question. The luxury of having that exptra starter is that maybe Winder or Ober can piggyback. But then you better break up Archer and Budy with, say, Gray between them. Gray needs to be allowed to pitch (and give up runs) towards the 7th inning at least. He can do it.

With the prospective returns of Ober, Winder and perhaps Maeda, that is more pitchers than the Twins can carry. Of course, Mahle is possibly headed to the IL. Sands may end up being optioned if/when he pitches again. Moran could come back (it makes sense to add another lefty) to the bullpen. The originally listed pitchers would seem to be on the outside looking in.

Why not Sisk to add a 2nd lefty. He is pitching much better than Moran in St. Paul. Whip is 1.10 vs. 1.63.

I do agree that Sisk is intriguing, but Moran has been successful with the Twins. I presume Sisk will be a tough roster decision for the Twins in the offseason.

In the middle of a pennant race, I don't see them going to either Winder or Ober in the rotation, each with only a partial season as a starter, over Bundy (3.54 ERA in his last 11 starts) or Archer (3.91 in his last 12).

The reality is that Bundy has also averaged more innings per start (5.24) than Gray (5.1) since they each came off the IL in mid-June. Gray can go 6 or even 7, but he's also been pulled in the third or fourth in four of his 11 starts since coming off the IL, each time because he's been ineffective. If you're worried about short starts, Gray has had more of them than Bundy has recently.

Fair, but it doesn’t help that Pagan keeps shooting holes in the lifeboats.

Pagan is a leaky lifeboat, not some insidious murderer dooming passengers to drown.

The ships engineers thought they could repair the lifeboat at sea, before the titanic set off on that doomed voyage. They failed miserably….
