Deibinson Joel Romero

Born: 9/24/86, Dominican Republic

Position: 3B

Bats: Right

Throws: Right

Deibinson Romero signed at age 17 with the Minnesota Twins as a non-drafted free agent on July 21, 2004. In 2012, he played 138 games with the AA New Britain Rock Cats, batting .267, with 19 HR, and 78 RBI. Romero tied for fifth in the Eastern League in homers and RBIs, ranked sixth in walks and third in games played.

This year, Romero did not make it to the Twins camp on time because immigration officials in the Dominican Republic were unable to issue him a visa. A hurricane last year destroyed the town hall in Romero's hometown of Perdenales, destroying his birth records. Until recently, he was working out at the Twins' Dominican academy. Romero joined extended spring training this week and hopes to be in game shape in a short time.

According to the Star Tribune Deibinson Romero is in Fort Myers, and will remain in extended spring training for the moment until the Twins determine he's ready to start a minor-league season, most likely at Rochester.

Deibinson was in the starting lineup, playing 3B for the Rock Cats today. In his first game of 2013, Romero was 0 for 3 with a walk, a strikeout, and 1 RBI.

In his first at bat he flied out to right. He struck out swinging in the top of the fourth. Then he grounded out to the pitcher with an awkward swing in the sixth, driving in a runner from third. He walked in the ninth before a game ending double play.

At this rate, all signs are pointing to a short stay at New Britain for Deibinson this year. Having now homered in consecutive games, he is now batting .304/.385/.478 with 2 HR in 7 games.

Here is a video of his first blast:

How soon should we expect him here in Rochester?

A humbling night for Romero. 0 for 4 with a strikeout in his Red Wings debut ending his streak of consecutive games with a HR. Not too worry, I'm sure this won't last long.

$5 tickets, 50 cents hot dogs, and Deibinson Romero's first AAA hit were the highlights at Turn Back the Clock day at Frontier Field. A great day at the ball park today, despite a 3-2 loss for the Red Wings.

After going hitless in his first two AAA games, Romero singled to center field to lead off the second inning.

Romero took second on a wild pitch by Charles Leesman, went to third on a single by Eric Farris, but was stranded there when Doug Bernier and Ray Olmedo both stroke out.

In the bottom of the third, the wings had the bases loaded with no one out. Oswaldo Arcia popped out to shortstop. Deibinson and Jeff Clement both followed with strikeouts.

In the 5th inning, the Wings once again loaded the bases with no one out. Arcia stroke out for the second time in the game. DJ Romero singled to left field driving in two runs, and took second base when Clete Thomas was caught in a rundown between second and third.

The wings lost the lead in the 8th and never recovered, but I'm stuffed and Romero definitely looks promising.

Romero's first AAA Home Run helped the Red Wings beat Lehigh Valley by a score of 13-10 today. The Wings are 6-2 since DJ joined the team. The team was 18-28 prior to his arrival.

A two homerun, 5 RBI night for Romero pushed the Wings to a 9-1 rout of the Charlotte Knights. Deibinson is now batting .333/.425/.636 in the last 10 games with 3 homeruns, 10 RBI, and 1 stolen base during that stretch. Interestingly, he is batting .185 at home compared to .429 on the road since being promoted to Triple-A.

So I finally cashed in the four Red Wings ticket vouchers I got for Christmas and it was quite an eventful night at Frontier Field. Eventful for a lot of people other than Deibinson Romero. The day started with a wedding at home plate, and ended with a fireworks spectacle. In between, the action included everything from little leaguers throwing out the first pitch to elementary school students singing the National Anthem and God Bless America. Highlighted of course, by a 5 run 9th inning to walk off against the Gwinnett Braves.

For Romero however, it was a forgettable night. He committed a throwing error in the top of the 5th inning that contributed to the Braves' 4th run of the game. With a chance to get the game winning hit, Romero struck out swinging with the bases loaded in the 8th and again with two on in the 9th.

Fortunately, this has not been a typical night for Romero. In the past 10 games, he is batting .341 with 3 HR and 8 RBI. He will definitely have to avoid getting behind in the count though. As soon as he falls behind, he seems to be swinging for the fences, batting .111 with 9 strikeouts.

Romero has cooled off in the last 10 games, batting .184 with 0 HR and 10 strikeouts. He will have to turn it around to stay in the conversation with Plouffe ahead of him and Sano not far behind.

Romero is heating up again. He has now reached base in 9 of the last 10 games and has a .869 OPS during that stretch. He is now batting .275 with 10 HR and 39 RBI, as well as drawing 31 walks in 61 games this year.
