Game Thread: Twins v Blue Jays, 8/5/22 @ 7:10pm Local Time

Good evening Game Thread fans!  I'm back for another Friday night thread opener!  Please, please...hold your applause!  Tip your waitstaff...

Today's tilt features an old friend and a new friend.  Unfortunately for the old friend, we hope he loses.  Fortunately for the new friend, we hope that he doesn't.  Of course, I'm referring Jose Berrios and Tyler Mahle.  Berrios, after an awful first half of the season, had a pretty good July.  Tyler Mahle, on the other hand, is making his Twins debut after being acquired from the Reds at the trade deadline.  He faces a pretty tough lineup that beat up the Twins bullpen last evening.

Before I get too far into this thing, I'd just like to mention that I always enjoy attending games against the Blue Jays.   The fans travel well and they make for a fun atmosphere.  They're enthusiastic, into the game and get behind their team.  They're also very friendly people, which only enhances the experience that is seldom seen with fans of towns I won't mention like Chicago, Boston and New York.  They're often good games, so good and friendly fans with a good crowd makes for an excellent atmosphere.  So, I raise my Sazerac to the Blue Jays fans' and thank you for not being like those fans from towns I won't mention like Chicago, Boston and New York!

Now that we have that out of the way, here are the lineups for this steamy evening matchup.

Toronto:

CF - Merrifield

1B - Guerrero, Jr

DH - Gurriel, Jr

RF - Hernandez

SS - Bichette

3B - Chapman

C - Jansen

LF - Tapia

2B - Espinal

Twins:

2B - Arraez

SS - Correa

DH - Polanco

3B - Miranda

LF - Gordon

RF - Cave

1B - Beckham

CF - Contreras

C - Leon

Enjoy the game!

Really like the top half of the order, particularly Miranda at cleanup.

...but it falls into an abyss after that...

Yeah, the bottom doesn't inspire much confidence.  Kepler will be such a welcome sight when he heals up.

I am also very appreciative of them spending their discretionary Loonies in our fair state!

I really hope tonight is better, last night was demoralizing! See what Mahle has got in store for us and should be running out a better RP squad tonight. Still need those bats to wake up though!! Otherwise it won't matter if the pitching is good or not. Polanco hits a HR, Gordon multi hit game! Go Twins!

The broken record that is I opines that the top doesn't inspire much confidence either.  Buxton, Correa and Arraez could each manage a .900 or higher OPS month, but absent two of them doing so the Twins will fade from the race by Labor Day.

Buck's injuries are mysterious but truly saddening, as I love his fierceness.  I love the constant enthusiasm and confidence of Piranha Luis.  And I'm thinking Carlos has a surge coming.  When that happens, I'll start fretting about spots 5-9 in the order.

Looking at the last 5 batters makes me sad, hopefully they prove me wrong. I really, really want Mahle to be good tonight to see how the Twins treat him.

That's what I'm most interested in tonight as well. Since the start of May he's gone at least 6 innings in 10 of his 14 starts. He's "built up" and can do it. If he's pulled after 5 innings and 72 pitches while only giving up a run or 2 I'm going to lose a lot of faith in this orgs ability to build a good pitching strategy.

Is Celestino still on paternity leave? He has been absent the team since Saturday, i believe. Anyone know when he will be back? He has been a quality utility man and we sure could use him now.

Celestino is on the bench tonight.

Hopefully if Mahle doing good the brain trust lets him go more then 5 innings

Twins are in an August pennant race, watching a winnable division title slowly slip away....and instead of putting the pedal to the metal, we get Mark Contreras and Jake Cave every night in the OF. It's downright embarrassing and frankly I don't see how anyone still expects this team to qualify for the post season. On paper this matchup looks like a bloodbath. How are we going to feel if this team gets swept at home in a 4 game series after trading away Spencer Steer and Encarnacion-Strand? Good grief, this organization is frustrating to root for sometimes.

That said, Go Twins.
