Juan Soto and Josh Bell to San Diego

This raises an interesting conundrum for San Diego the combination of the salaries of Soto and Bell (13m and 10m) exceeds Hosmer's salary (20m), although not by much in there is the short remainder of the season to consider still, the Padres were very tight against the luxury tax and have tried to stay below than the last couple of years. Peter was also more expensive than Rogers.

Makes one wonder that given Padres' excess starting pitching, maybe a salary dump trade of Blake Snell or Mike Clevenger might be in order? Perhaps even our beloved Twins could pick 1 of those 2 up for a decent but not great prospect or an A ball guy plus Emilio Pagan. I don't know that that will be possible but I would sure be on phone with San Diego exploring the possibilities . . .

Falvey should be spam calling Preller saying we’re more than happy to solve their payroll issues…

They exceeded the threshold last season so they aren't completely against going over.  They will probably need to reset that soon though and will probably push to next season.  They can opt out of the Wil Myers contract (20M) and the contracts are up for Sean Manea (9.7M), Mike Clevinger (8M), Stammen (4m), and Johnson (3M).  If they fill out the rotation internally, which they probably can, they might be close.

It will probably be another offseason of them trying to ditch the Hosmer deal.  After this season it drops to 13.63M per year so it might be a little more manageable to get rid of if they can get him to agree to it.

If the Twins are willing to take on salary (big if), I'd hope it's Blake Snell.

Also, good for Hosmer. San Diego doesn't need to be bailed out for their own poor decisions. They signed that contract.

Tough position for Hosmer. He has every right to enforce his no-trade clause and he has to look out for his best interests.

He made his money, but he can't be in a good mental space. Three years left, they yank him for better defense, they've been trying to trade him for years, and there will be some frustration with office/teammates/fans that he wouldn't negotiate and then go to DC. Now he's there, waiting to get the call that someone on his ok-to-trade list has agreed to take him for a couple of cracked bats and salary relief. Sure, he's cashing his checks, but it's a big comedown from KC World Series hero.

This must be about as close as MLB gets to the trades in the NBA where someone is valuable only because their contract is expiring and it creates future cap space.

I'd guess his teammates will have his back. Coaches too. That's surely more important to him than the front office and fans.

True, but it might depend on if another major leaguer gets traded instead of him, Who it is might have some ramifications, I would think. My guess is those players support his right to get paid, but they want to win a World Series too and he might not be all that crucial to the cause.
