Juan Soto and Josh Bell to San Diego

Machado, Tatis, Soto and Bell. Man is that lineup going to be scary.

I wonder what the equivalent would be if the Twins were to make this trade.

Gore -> Joe Ryan

Abrams -> Royce Lewis

Hassell and James Wood -> Kirilloff and Larnach

Jarlin Susana -> Matt Canterino

Maybe something like this?

Hosmer has a no trade clause and evidently SD has not reached out to get his consent yet. So that’s why the deal is being held up right now.

Why wouldn't Hosmer want to go play for a winner like Washington?

No one likes to be in San Diego anyway.

They still have to find a way to sign Soto as well or they only get him for 2.5 years?  And they have Machado and Tatis huge Salaries and not much of a farm left after this deal.  He better hope the pitching holds up but the lineup could be amazing with that trio of players then some.

I'll be they're going to have 3 albatross salaries and only pre-arb players when this season is over.

Hosmer drops to $13MM next year when he exercises his player options. Corbin is brutal though. Always a chance Strasburg returns, but boy does it look ugly right now.

The good news is Washington is a big market. Carrying a payroll near $200MM shouldn't be a problem for them when they're playing well so there's plenty of room left.

2.5 years is a pretty long time in baseball years. They look like they have a great core, but with age, injuries and the general unpredictability of athletes, there's no telling what shape the club will be in come 2025. I don't think an extension is eminent and I doubt San Diego thinks it's eminent either.

They are for sale, and the buyers may or may not have cash left over to spend.... We'll find out in a couple years!

Yeah, I mean he's under contract for three more years and those years promise to be absolutely brutal on a Washington team that has sold away any usable players. I wouldn't want to go.

Players get compensated to waive their no trade clause so Hosmer is probably getting a fat check to say yes to the deal. Then likely opt out at the end of the year.

Well he's due to make 39M over the next three years. As a free agent he'd probably be lucky to get 8M per year, and I doubt anyone would commit more than 2 years to him. That would have to be one huge check.

Washington took Hosmers salary?

This raises an interesting conundrum for San Diego the combination of the salaries of Soto and Bell (13m and 10m) exceeds Hosmer's salary (20m), although not by much in there is the short remainder of the season to consider still, the Padres were very tight against the luxury tax and have tried to stay below than the last couple of years. Peter was also more expensive than Rogers.

Makes one wonder that given Padres' excess starting pitching, maybe a salary dump trade of Blake Snell or Mike Clevenger might be in order? Perhaps even our beloved Twins could pick 1 of those 2 up for a decent but not great prospect or an A ball guy plus Emilio Pagan. I don't know that that will be possible but I would sure be on phone with San Diego exploring the possibilities . . .

I think they were trying to stay under the luxury tax, but maybe they said screw it and decided to go all in.

But I could still see them shedding some payroll.  I'd be in for Clevenger or Snell.
