Padres & Brewers Swap Closers - Rogers Traded to Milwaukee

Wondering why Taylor Rogers didn't close out the game last nite in San Diego? Answer: Today!

In a surprise move the Milwaukee Brewers traded their All-Star closer to the Padres. They got Taylor Rogers back in return, as well as two decent prospects, and someone that MIGHT contribute short-term.

P.S. Oh, and remember the Twins have basically paid Rogers salary for this season.

Hader is a stud, but hefty price for a rental IMO

Very creative move by Brewers. Rogers will mainly setup, Mil has younger guy who will close. Lamet's a flyer but why not, Mil seems to have success with their coaching up pitchers. Ballsy but doing what they need to do to compete this year and next. Model for Twins?

Now reporting  Twins are out on Montas, sounds like NYY likely spot fir him

Only two prospects. Dinelson Lamet is a veteran, he is making $4.78 mil in his second-to-last arbitration season this year, so he will be a FA after 2023 unless the Brewers cut him loose earlier.

If anyone wants to learn or talk more about this deal from the Brewers perspective, it’s a perfect opportunity to visit the Twins Daily sister site, Brewer Fanatic:

I can appreciate the angst from their perspective, but Hader hasnt exactly been lights out the past month, and Rogers can perform well, when rested between games.....apparently their other guy is a high projection bp guy. Lamet could theoretically contribute low leverage innings from BP. And they take a chance one of the 2 minors contribute in a future year. Its the sort of trade the Milw's of baseball world need to make, I think they did fine with it.

The Brewers have Devin Williams, and he's very good. Gets as many K's, if not more, than Hader does. He'll be the closer. Hader will be high buck when he gets to free agency after next season, so this deal will save Mil money. Rogers can close some games too and he'll be better as the set up guy anyway. The prospects that the Pads included are highly regarded. I don't think this deal hurts the Brewers at all. The REAL question is ...HAVE WE DONE ANYTHING YET? We've got Aaron Sanchez starting tonight...oh boy!
