My evolving opinion on where the Twins stand

Correa has not been a stud on the field, like we hoped, but perhaps his value has gone way beyond what goes on between the lines. I think whether he stays depends on how the Twins do the rest of the way. There are so many injuries. And so many players having not so good seasons. But Twins have a lot of games left with Cleveland and Chicago...and thats where the Central will be decided. Its in the Twins hands.

Correa is on track to a 4 WAR Season.  At $8.5 million per a WAR he hits a 4 War season and he met his contract.  No offense,  that is one hell of a season.  Even if it isn't as good as last years.  When you are shooting for one of the highest contracts in history though,  it might be slightly below what you want to go into free agency with.

This is it, but I will add that Correa has a clutch/playoff rep and he may well rise to the occasion as the season wears on and accumulate impressive value.

In terms of rate stats he’s top 5 hitter as short stop. In counting stats (WAR) he’s middle of the pack because he’s missed a few games. He’s on pace for a 4 WAR season and 123 wRC+, That is pretty darn good!

This is where all those brand new metric-type stats can be misleading. His BA is not very good (for a superstar). He has average power (ok) and his run production is average at best. And he k's a lot. So he can WAR all season long, but I think he needs to do more to justify the contract.

I do agree that he still has time to be the go-to guy but so far, the 'eye test' says he isn't quite there yet. Just what I'm seeing. You guys may see it totally differently.

The contract numbers can totally skewer our impression of a player. Carlos Correa has been very good this year, but the contract number ($35M) screams for someone to be mentioned as an MVP. If you watch a ton of baseball, both on a screen and in person you know what a significant difference Correa is at shortstop. Yet it is clear that he trails Aaron Judge by a clear margin and is #6 in OPS among shortstops. That is really good but the mind goes, "Yes, but he makes $35 million". I hope he is back next year but if he is not I hand the position off to Jermaine Palacios and those who worry about salary will be relieved of their anxiety.
