2022 MLB Draft Day 3 Thread

Recommended Posts

Omari Daniel, SS, The Walker School, GA. Looks like he may have been injured his Senior season. Appeared in only a handful of games.

Bio from MaxPreps:

Omari Daniel is a 2022 SS/ with a 6-2 180 lb. frame from Smyrna, GA who attends The Walker School. Recorded a 6.69 second 60-yard dash time. Projectable build with plenty of fast twitch and athleticism present. Primary shortstop with good hands and moves really well. Higher slot with excellent arm strength recorded up to 97 mph. Attacks the ball and surrounds well. Very good defensive actions with plus arm strength to back it up. Right-handed hitter with a slightly open stance and good extension through contact. Functional stroke with a middle of the field plan. Linear impact and hips work well into contact. Big upside in all facets. Great student. Verbal commitment to Oregon.

Sounds almost too good to be true to sign.

might be a backup plan if something were to go haywire with Priellip.  I am guessing he is mormon and doing a 2 year mission as he would not be attending Oregon until 2024.  Maybe a player you stash for a couple years.

Any available mission trips in Fort Myers?

From Prospects Live:

The book on Daniel is pure octane. He's got electric bat speed and an absolute howitzer across the diamond. Daniel has a long, angular body that projects to add plenty of weight moving forward. He's likely a better fit at third base as he transitions into college and pro ball, but the tools are more than loud enough to profile into the corner infield spots. Daniel is presently an average runner.

Seems like maybe a tough sign.  Could be more of a contingency plan if the end up with extra money somehow.  Or maybe he they know his price tag at a couple hundred thousand and think they have the money to get him.

"The Ducks have two other high school commits who could be drafted — shortstops Dominic Hellman and Omari Daniel. Neither is as highly regarded as Cox, so it will be interesting to see if they wind up at Oregon or not. Daniel won’t be attending Oregon until 2024."

Perfect Game lists him as their 467th best HS prospect with a college commit to Northwest Florida State. So ... who knows?

Northwest Florida State is a Junior College program.

I don't really know how exactly how the commitments work, but maybe it's possible to have commitments both to a JuCo and then a 4-yr school a couple years down the line.

Huh. Maybe that's what the "verbal commitment" to Oregon referenced above means, that he can't commit more formally if he's going to JuCo?

While lots of players in the draft are always listed as shortstops, especially in high school when they are generally the best player on their team, this draft has really taken that to an extreme.

Taking a bunch of shortstops and catchers and then letting them fall down the defensive spectrum as they go doesn't seem like a terrible strategy overall.  In the near term playing time at SS could be highly competitive though.  I also don't know that they've gotten anyone particularly speedy that could end up in center.

Ah, I still remember when Miguel Sano was a shortstop.

Might be worth a look to give him some reps there again.

As long as the bat plays.  But if most of a player's value resides in his glove, then the defensive spectrum doesn't mean as much.  And the hard part, at this stage in the draft, is that players who have both bat and a nominal shot at SS are few and far between.  Hopefully that's what the FO has found in some hard-to-sign draftees?
