2022 MLB Draft Day 2 Thread

Recommended Posts

The Twins added three players on Sunday night and will add seven more on Tuesday. This article will be updated with each Twins pick, so check back often.

Today's portion of the draft, which will include rounds 3 through 10, will begin at 1 p.m. CT.

Keep up to date with the new Twins Draft Tracker

Yesterday, the Twins added these three players, and the Twins are thrilled with Day 1!

But before we get to the player, here is an interesting new rule that will put these drafted players on the field much sooner than in the past.

1 (8) - Brooks Lee, SS, Cal Poly
21 years old. 6-2, 205. Switch-hitter.
Hit: 60. Power: 50. Speed: 45. Field: 50. Arm: 55
Slot money: $5,439,500

2 (48) - Connor Prielipp, LHP, Alabama
21 years old. 6-2, 210. Left-handed pitcher.
Fastball: 60. Slider: 70. Change-up: 50. Control 55.
Slot money: $1,621,900

CB (78) - Tanner Schobel, SS, Virginia Tech
21 years old. 5-10, 170. Shortstop.
Hit: 50. Power: 40. Speed: 50. Field: 50. Arm: 50
Slot money: $1,001,500

3 - With their third-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, the Minnesota Twins chose SS Carlos Correa. OK, that's not officially how it works, but when the Twins signed Correa in March, they forfeited their third-round pick in this draft. I would say that's another excellent choice.

Man, just came here to say, what a first day! Twins grab a consensus top 7 players AND one of the pitchers they were linked with for number eight overall. Genuinely amped about that outcome. Also just want to gas up Jeremy. The amount he's put into the threads, the content, the planning etc. for the draft (both here and at Brewer Fanatic) is amazing. Enjoy day two everyone.

Appreciate it guys!

This wasn't me alone though.

Jamie's done just as much and keep Twitter covered last night.

And Brock and Seth behind the scenes made everything run smoothly. The draft tracker is super cool.

So what you're saying is ... it takes a village :)

Okay, so good job to all involved!

For folks interested. Here's some updated on the Consensus Board, which worked pretty well as a first time concept. 63 of the top 70 players on the board were taken in the first 80 picks (aka last night). I only ranked 75 consensus players (and wrote up 56) but that's pretty encouraging preliminary data given how much of a hot mess the draft usually is. Twins don't pick again until 114, but here's the few remaining players on the board and their overall ranking (unless I missed someone which is possible because I got deep into the weeds writing about Prielipp and Schobel last night):

Brock Porter - 13 (going to Clemson?)
Jonathan Cannon - 52 (RHP, Georgia)
Tristian Smith - 61 (LHP, prep)
Cameron Smith - 63 (SS, prep)
Brady Neal - 64 (C, prep)
Brandon Sproat - 68 (RHP, Florida)
Gavin Kilen - 70 (SS, prep)
Connor Staine - 71 (RHP, Central Florida)
Gavin Turley - 72 (OF, Prep)
Jake Madden - 74 (RHP, JUCO)
Max Martin - 75 (SS, Prep)
Sonny DiChiaara - 76 (1B, Auburn)

I'm pretty sure he's a Boras guy. I'm also pretty sure Rocker and Porter are a package deal.

If that is the case should the Twins have worked out a similar deal at 8 and 68? I like the three they chose but pitching is scarce.

I think we may have had something with Preillip at 8 before Lee fell to us.  But Preillip was willing to still work something out with us.

I get that from a Rangers and Boras perspective, but why would the players be OK with this? I mean, Porter was rated higher than Rocker on many lists. Did Boras somehow talk both players into splitting the bonus 50/50?

Puzzling to me as well. If they do split the bonus 50/50, both wind up being pick 15. So perhaps that's exactly the deal Boras brokered. Makes sense for both players, especially if Porter was going to drop because of his perceived firm commitment to Clemson.

Well said - thank you also to Jamie, Brock, and Seth as well. I have enjoyed your work.

Brandon Birdsell if still available would be a smart pick to save money,  he is a senior, can't go back again can he?

I suppose he could go play again in an independent league.  His draft value would get lower though as he'd be another year older.

Rocker is getting $5.2m, so they're banking $2.4. Porter's slot was $560k. The Rangers will shave money of more of their picks and Porter will get Top 12ish money.
