Keep in mind that GBA is not an official song or anthem. There have been dozens of patriotic songs written over the years and this is just one of those. It's nothing special. It's just a song. So there's no required or expected protocol when it's played or performed.

Try saying that at a game in Mississippi.  Son Stashbury experienced that on his current road trip.  A local resident gently tried to remind him to doff his cap for GBA.  He was lucky not to have sparked a fistfight when he opted not to.

Other than showing respect and thanks for being afforded the opportunity to play a ball game (poorly in our case) for millions of dollars, yeah ?

It's special to me.

Thanks for the lesson.  I just expect if someone holds their hat or hand over their chest, they're following some standard of protocol.  I havbe been corrected and shall await my public flogging.

I'm not saying you must disregard what is customary, I'm just saying that it's not necessary and you should do what you like.

Looks like Twins do not want to play this game today.

There have been a few of these games the last few weeks and you wonder how long they'll lead the Central.  I wonder how having a different lineup and batting order every day affects the team. One hit today so far.

Try saying that at the ballpark when in Mississippi. :)

I don't understand. How does GBA have anything to do with that?

Imagine if Baldelli was Cal   Ripken's manager?   " Cal, you're over 2000 consecutive games played, got 13 a games  hitting streak, and your defense has been magical.  We're in a battle for first place, so I'm gonna sit you for a couple of games".

Maybe it doesn’t to you, but it’s such a tiny tiny thing to ask of someone to stand for a minute and take their hat off, is it worth making a stink over? Imagine if the country still called ball players (and everyone else) to serve in wars instead of expecting them to stand for a song. Bet you they’d rather stand for a minute.

and besides you’re free to do whatever you want as a fan. Someone might give you grief but that’s about it. Not sure if the teams require it or fine players who don’t stand. When I worked in minor league ball some guys would go up the tunnel during the anthem. Doubt they ever got fined. It would just look a little more respectful if everyone was on the same page.

That person is doing it because they want to, which is fine. That person is also free to do so when The Ramones are played between pitches. It's just that it's not the same as doing so for the National Anthem.

It's not the anthem. It's actually making a stink over it by asking anyone to stand for a song that is patriotic in nature, but is not our anthem, not even close. If you want to stand, stand. If someone else chooses not to, let them. It might have meaning to you, but not to someone else, because it's not our National Anthem. It's a song written by Irving Berlin, and, from a musical standpoint, not even that great of a song. I cringe every time I hear it because I hate it. Woody Guthrie 'mocked' it when he wrote 'This Land Is Your Land.' Now, 'America, the Beautiful', that's a lovely song. But, it's still not our anthem. It just lands in the same genre with the myriad other of patriotic songs, which no one is obligated to, or should be shamed to, stand for. Imo.

Hey, we gotta have something to talk about. The game sure isn't a worthwhile topic of discussion.

I would agree that’s it’s probably overkill to have it played at all games. But even during the anthem, there isn’t a whole lot of uniform respect shown from the players. Just a sign of the times.

Singing Woody's song is something I can get behind.

When people stand for GBA, I actually think it's a HUGE disrespect to our actual National Anthem. HUUUUUUGE. So, yes, I'll stay seated and if anyone wants to ask me, I'll tell them that, that they are the ones being disrespectful.

That’s a bit of a stretch lol

Eh ... as a song, I don't particularly like that one, either ... lol ... yes, I'm a music snob.

But I think 'America, the Beautiful' is a beautiful song. Would gladly sing along to that. But I'd likely not stand, or maybe to stretch my legs, because it is the 7th inning stretch :)
