Game Thread: White Sox @ Twins 1:10 7/16/2022

The Twins have been depressing lately so I wanted to talk about a couple more exciting things today. One local feature and one national. Let's start local (Twin Cities local, sorry all you out of town/state-ers).

The Firemen's Softball Tournament is taking place this weekend in Bloomington (East 90th and Portland for anyone who wants to check it out!). For those of us who's bodies no longer allow them to play hardball we've migrated to the soft side of things and this tournament is the spectacle of the summer. If you enjoy beer, sun, large crowds of people, and lots of softball you should swing on down and check it out. Just follow the gigantic crowds to find the "show" field where the best teams from around the country battle it out for softball supremacy. It's a fun weekend full of different levels of softball and it's a really good time right in our backyard.

The second exciting event of the weekend is the MLB Futures Game tonight. For those of you who have never checked it out, or even heard of it, you're missing out! It's played the weekend before the All Star Game every year at the All Star stadium. Top prospects from every organization battle it out in a 7 inning game. The teams used to be split up World vs USA, but it's now NL vs AL. As those who follow this site regularly know, the Twins will be represented by new St Paul teammates Spencer Steer and Matt Wallner. It's one of my favorite events of the year and I always try to tune in to see the coming wave of talent around the league. The game starts at 6 PM central time and here's a link to a nice info page on the game.

Bonus event! The MLB draft starts this Sunday night as well. If you haven't been following Jeremy Nygaard's coverage of the draft you've really been missing out. His final Mock Draft can be found here. And the top 25 of his consensus big board can be found here. Jeremy has done an amazing job providing info on all the prospects in play for the Twins with the #8 and 48 picks Sunday night.

So while the Twins may be depressing you on the field you now have 3 options in the baseball universe to check out this weekend!

Now to the squad that will be turning our frowns upside down today! (Hopefully)

Your MN Twins will run out Dylan Bundy (5-4, 4.68 ERA) to the mound to be backed up by a lineup that looks something like this:
Luis Arraez, 1B
Carlos Correa, SS
Byron Buxton, DH
Max Kepler, RF
Jorge Polanco, 2B
Alex Kirilloff, LF
Nick Gordon, CF
Gio Urshela, 3B
Gary Sanchez, C

The pale hose will counter with Lance Lynn (1-2, 6.97 ERA) on the mound ready to be let down by a defensive lineup behind him that looks like this:
Tim Anderson, SS
Yoan Moncada, 3B
Andrew Vaughn, DH
Jose Abreu, 1B
Gavin Sheets, RF
AJ Pollock, LF
Josh Harrison, 2B
Seby Zavala, C
Adam Engel, CF

Oh, it took me a moment to figure it out, but the minors weren't locked out, so the futures game was not rescheduled like the allstar game was.

I hope we win.

Rocco sure loves to put Kep in the 4 spot.

Kepler is alright there. He probably shouldn't be lower than fifth. He's up near the top of the team as far as getting on base.  I just wish they would use the same lineup vs. right and left starters for a couple weeks and leave the catchers in the nine-hole during that time. Give the lineups a chance to get on a roll.

The Twins will be in first place at the break. Will they be buyers or sellers? Haha…. (not really a joke)

Buy only if the person acquired can help for ‘23 and beyond. Sellers if they can pull a nice haul like they did for berrios and cruz. But doubtful they have anyone with enough clout to pull that off again. Wonder where things stand with correa

Twins are sinking fast and in dire need of pitching...to go along with their hit or miss lineup. Correa and Buxton are not playing the 'superstar' roles they were signed to play. Both have really gotten the 'k' bug, especially Buxton, who hasn't had a start without a k in probably a month. Correa just hasn't been that exciting. At least from how I have seen him. Good, but not exceptional. Sometimes, not good.

For Twins to finish on top they definitely need pitching, real soon. Nobody is standing out right now.  Who could they trade? Perhaps some AAA or AA talent? Maybe a package of Kepler, Celestino, Garlick, Sano, Sanchez? I'd not touch Kirilloff, Gordon, Miranda. or Polanco. Which is more impt...bullpen or starters? I'd say both are a mess right now. They have a ton of games left with Chicago so its not a stretch to see the Sox overtake the Twins with relative ease the way things are trending.

I'm just not real confident this team is very good. they caught a break early on when Cleve and Chi were also struggling..but I think both are better than the Twins, at least the way the Twins are now playing (which is painful)

I've been off the site for a week or so due to a combination of a visit by my 2-year-old granddaughter (who proceeded to test positive for covid shortly after arriving) and a general boredom/disgust for the Twins' performances of late.

I might watch a few minutes today, but for me the H0F ceremony for Kaat is great, and well-deserved. And it does not involve players making hundreds of thousands of dollars per appearance striking out and grounding into double plays to kill rallies.

I grew up next to Buyers. Good folk. They had to be to put up with me.

(They might not have spelled their name with a u...)

Does anybody know what's going on with this delay?

I don't know, but safe to assume someone does. Sounds like a number retirement? Or perhaps Twins hall of fame induction?

I like think though since the status of the game is listed as "warmup" and it must be an hour into that, we are reviving someone from cryogenic suspension....
