Injury Updates

Recommended Posts

I don't do Twitter and I haven't found a place on the internet that provides timely updates on injured players. There was a posting in "Twins Roster Moves" asking for information on Bailey Ober. There are several others I haven't heard about in weeks--Alcala, Coulombe and Dobnak. Also Jhon Romero (remember him?). Alcala, for example was shut down "temporarily" after making one rehab appearance on June 1 and we haven't heard anything concrete since.

The Twins mlb website does provide updates, but they don't update every day. I will pin this as a place to update Twins' injuries. Contributors who are plugged in more than me are welcome! Thanks.

If this team could manage to get Alcala, Ober and Meada back in August/September, that would be bigger than anything they could do on the trade front.

At this point though, I'm really only optimistic about Ober.

Agreed.

Same.

Too bad. Maeda would be just the kind of guy that propels a playoff team further. Imagine a bullpen of their two good pitchers now, Winder, Alcala, Ober and Maeda for the playoffs. That would be great (or, sub Archer for Winder and have Winder start).

Last week Dan Hayes tweeted that Alcala is in a holding pattern on his rehab. With no news this week, it’s safe to assume that is still the case.

Hayes also tweeted last week Ober was cleared to start doing a lifting program. No indication he’s started bullpen sessions or throwing to hitters yet.

mlb.com/twins usually has a link to the latest moves and injury updates for the Twins.

I also look at cbsports.com/mlb/injuries for updates across MLB.

The CBS URL needs a double-s, in case that saves anyone a bit of experimentation.   But that's a good resource, giving what the MLB one does plus insight on their return, and also in one place in case you don't feel like clicking on each individual mlb.com player link.

According to the Twins website, Alcala is supposed to throw a bullpen session today and then a live batting practice session on Friday or Saturday. This is the first news I've seen on him since he was placed in a "holding pattern" after reporting stiffness after a one-inning rehab appearance.

I haven't found any updates on Alcala, Coulombe, Maeda, Larnach, Jeffers or Jhon Romero, but in the minor league report, Matt Braun notes that Josh Winder was again placed on the Injured List (for the Saints) with shoulder impingment. I guess this means that the next man up is indeed Devin Smeltzer when another starter is needed.

I really like Winder as a starter, but it's really starting to look like health-wise he's destined for the bullpen. I hope they figure out how to avoid future injury issues with him.

Looks like Winder may be down for quite some time:

"Meanwhile, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune tweets that promising young righty Josh Winder, one of the Twins’ brightest arms and currently the game’s No. 68 prospect at Baseball America, is being shut due to recurring shoulder discomfort. The Twins are still trying to determine the cause of the issue, but the loss of Winder, who’s already given them 45 1/3 Major League innings (3.77 ERA) is a huge hit to the Twins’ rotation and bullpen depth." - MLBtraderumors

Shoulder impingement is not good, like I said in another thread, I have been dealing with it for over 6 months and it still isn't right. Good Luck Winder!

Again today I checked sources for information about the Twins' injured players and see no current information. If anyone has fresh information, please post it here. Thanks.

Specifically, the last I've heard about Buxton is that he is expected to return sometime, no dates and no change on his recovery schedule. Larnach--according to the Twins' web site, he was expected to begin a rehab stint somewhere around 9/1, but as far as I know, he has not started a rehab assignment. Jeffers--pretty much the same, again no information that he has started a rehab assignment . Dobnak is on a rehab assignment in St. Paul and Winder is on the active list for the Saints. I haven't heard if there is any change in Mahle's status or if Polanco is ramping up toward being activated. Ober has made two rehab starts in Florida. I have heard nothing further.

Ober is supposed to start Sunday in St. Paul on an 80 pitch limit according to Rotowire .

Isn't Sunday a TBD starting pitcher for the Twins?  I wonder what can be accomplished with an 80-pitch limit at AAA, that can't play out the same against major leaguers.  If we set the over-under at 80, anyone care to take the "over" for whomever the Twins run out there?

Honestly, during a pennant drive (slow-mule race though it be), I don't understand the lack of urgency I see in getting players (whom we were told were key) back.  No, I don't want anyone rushed in ways medically harmful, or even questionable, but rehab starts in September?  Aren't those pretty close to full-bore?  Are they expecting Ober to fail next Sunday?
