Twins Bullpen Numbers

The Twins have lost 36 games to date.

The Bullpen has lost 15 games where they inherited a lead and blew it, sometimes more than once.  That is about 42% of the losses.

Setting aside the demoralizing psychological impact of all these blown leads and games, this strikes me as an amazingly high percentage and number of blown games so far into a season.  Is this inordinately high, or is it just recency bias because of the Cleveland debacle?

Why is Josh Winder not in our bullpen. He is pitching  meaningless innings in AAA when you could be helping our bullpen protect leads and win games(see Johan Duran). Why does the front office cycle through the same guys with the same results. We have to win the division to get in the playoffs. We have been presented a golden opportunity to win the division. Does the front office wait until we are playing catch up to make changes, If you can not trade for an upgrade at least use your resources in the best way possible. When Ober returns we have 7 starters - put 2 guys in the bullpen. I am sure we will be better off.

Fear of eating contracts?

Does anyone really know their role, except that starters don't pitch enough innings and somehow throwing another four pitchers into the mix will confuse the other side?

What would it be like if the Twins had consistent set-up guys and a real closer?

What meaningless innings? His 8 rehab innings in AAA since his injury built him up for the major league start he had Tuesday. I am certain he was the planned starter for that game all along. Those 8 AAA innings were meaningful rehab innings.

Why return him? He couldn’t help the bullpen this week until around Sunday after his start. Would you have kept him up this week when unavailable to pitch?

There are more off days in the upcoming schedule as well as the all star break. The burden will be significantly less than the current 17 games in 16 day stretch. I expect we will see reinforcements by trade or Winder in the next tough stretch that begins July 29.

They actually couldn't keep him up if I'm remembering the rules correctly. The waiting period for pitchers after being sent to the minors is 15 days now (again, if I'm remembering correctly). He was officially optioned to St Paul on 6/23 after completing his rehab starts. So he can't be recalled until a week from today if I have my math right. He was allowed to start Wednesday because he was the 27th man callup for the double header. They had to send him back after that game.

Thanks for the addition. I am sure the plan all along was that double header start. To call him up earlier he would not have been available from the pen either as he was scheduled to start further burdening the pen. The alternative was the option

His 6 inning start led to a win. It is hard to argue that he should have been used  differently.

They can bring him back earlier if there is an injury.

Yeah, I think the plan all along was for him to get that start and they did things based on that. Makes sense to me. I'll be interested to see what they do with the rotation, and staff as a whole, if all 7 starters are healthy at the same time.
