Padres Trade Ideas

MLB Trade Rumors has a lengthy piece discussing the Padres situation.  They have the 5th best record and run diff in baseball, but are right up against the luxury tax threshold and have next to no production from CF and DH.

The general framework for the trade is to remove some cap from the Padres, get them help for CF and corner OF and focus on their win now approach.

The approach for the Twins is to absorb some salary (short-term), balance their roster, drop some guys from the potential 40 man due to their impending crunch, and continue to build the pipeline for the future.

Just spit-balling here, but:

Padres send Will Myers, Luis Campusano, James Wood and Jarlin Susana.  Twins send Max Kepler, Austin Martin, Spencer Steer and Aaron Sabato.

Trying to be fair to both teams.  Myers is a negative asset, the 3 young Padres include a stud AAA catcher and 2 younger, promising prospects.  Padres get Kepler who can play both CF and corner OF, Martin who can play LF or utility, Steer who is tearing up the minors, and Sabato as a potential DH down the road.

Thoughts?

I can see the draw with upgrading the catcher position, but really, the difference between a good catcher and a bad catcher isn't as big of a gap as it is with the other positions. In all likelihood, Gary Sanchez would provide more value at catcher than Campusano this year, the Twins just keep riding with Jeffers behind the plate for some reason.

Also, Alex Isola is looking every bit the prospect that Campusano is right now. If upgrading the catcher position is a priority, try Isola first before getting rid of Kepler who's helping the team now. And Steer, who will be able to help long before those other Padres prospects are ready.

Yeah, I don't see the draw in trading Kepler (who's under control for 2 more years at reasonable prices) plus 2 of our top prospects to bring back a negative asset, a catcher who hasn't shown he can hit major league pitching in his first 3 short stints, a rookie ball pitcher, and Wood (I like him and would take him, but he's not enough to outweigh the assets the Twins would be sending).

The Twins are in the now time to improve the roster because the Twins may have a better in 23 than 22 and not make the playoffs  Whereas in 22 they have a reasonable chance to make the playoffs. The 23 roster is in doubt and injuries can change things in a heart beat.  The need to make an attempt to trade for good closer, & starting pitcher. So what if the Twins need to move a high prospect such as  Martin,  Balazovic, from the top ten one or two from the 10-20 and one or two from 21-30 prospects. We know who the early trade candidates are but the other clubs will be inventorying their rosters and a surprise may be available. A top prospect age 24 with no mlb experience for a 28 year old seasoned mlb-er with decent stats may be a very worth while trade.

First, what about substituting Celestino for Kepler?

Second, I am not in any way suggesting this is the only move for the Twins.  I still want them to add bullpen help.  I just view this as an opportunity to upgrade the entire system for some short term financial pain (which I don't pay for!)

Are the values way off?
