Consistency - hits, runs and wins

I read MLB.com today https://www.mlb.com/news/dylan-bundy-logs-quality-start-in-twins-loss-to-rockies  by Do-Hyoung Park and it got me wanting to dig deeper.  "MINNEAPOLIS -- The Twins’ pitchers couldn’t have done much more to help the cause in the past two days -- but the hitters couldn’t have done much less. That has led to a two-game stretch unlike any the team has seen in more than a half-century -- and on Friday night, it led to defeat, too."

72 games – 39 – 33, 542 pct – 44.4% of the season

10 shutouts 13.9% of games

1 run - 7 games

2 runs 10 games

So zero - two runs 27 games - 37.5%

4 runs - 4 times

5 runs - 6 games

6 runs 3 games

7 runs 5 games

so 4 - 7 runs 18 games - 25% of games

17 games 8+ runs 23.6% of games

How do you analyze this?  Are we a good offense or a bad, are we consistent or inconsistent?  Why?

We scored 4 runs in three games against the Royals - last place team.

Seven in three versus the terrible A's.

Then we clobber the Tigers and the Orioles

6 in four games versus the Astros

It is hard to predict and thus it is frustrating.  How do you feel about the Twins lineup?

They’re 4th in the AL in runs scored, 4.4 per game but have been shut out 10 times.

they score a bunch, or not at all.

it seems like the very conservative run game is part of this. They’re built and coached to trot around the bases post dinger.

the new Manfred ball suppresses homers, so if the hits don’t come, they struggle to manufacture on the small ball tactics.

seems like this is recognized and being coached/implemented in the minors.

what to do now in the majors?

Seems like the current state of MLB. Especially when every game has a box score with about 10 pitchers listed. Everything still translates into wins and losses and the Twins absolutely must win at least 3 of the upcoming 5 games. Whether 1-0 or 10-9 makes no difference.

I believe on Friday night all of MLB scored something like 80 runs. That is considerably worse than 3 runs per team. Scoring is down all over the place. The Yankees are this year’s juggernaut and they don’t have a .300 hitter and half of their regulars are hitting under .250. Home runs are way down too. If BAs are low and balls aren’t going over the fence, how do you score? The Twins don’t have the tools to have a good running game. Shooting balls down the line or in the gaps is what won the game for the Twins, plus a bunch of singles right out of the gate.

I think it is a little strong to say that the Twins “absolutely must win at least 3 of the upcoming 5 games.” Two wins would keep them in first place and it appears their roster is getting healthier. It’s a long season and all of the teams in the Central have flaws.

When looking at this against the league as a whole, I take that they're extremely inconsistent.  As @Richie the Rally Goat mentioned, they either score a lot of none.  That's bothersome over the long haul, particularly in the playoffs when they'll be going against top pitchers more frequently.  Their reliance on the long ball is the problem, in my view.  That produces a feast or famine result, always has.

I'm hoping that since the league as a whole has lower run totals, that we'll start to see a transition back to a more balanced offensive attach league wide.  Eliminating the shift will help that, but the all or nothing mentality is problematic in my view.

Agreed.  I don't think Cleveland can continue the pace that they're on either.  I could be absolutely wrong there, but their current run doesn't seem sustainable to me.

In yesterdays game, the top of the lineup did the damage with an absolute 0 from the bottom of the lineup.  We need some of the younger players to start producing and be more consistent.   However this team goes as buxton plays,  in the last 6 games buxton was out for 4 games by my math we were 1-3,  he is back for 2 games 1 as a DH and we are 2-0.  We need Buxton healthy and I just don't know if his knees can hold up to any continuous play.

If my memory is correct some people said the same thing about the last series with the Gaurdians.  It's a 162 game season and no 5 game stretch defines the season.  The Gaurdians are a good example.  Started slow, then played great, now they have a 5 game skid.  The Dodgers had a bad stretch and so did just about every other team.  The Orioles have been playing quite well and the reds are much improved.  That's baseball.

"Absolutely must win..." might be a little strong but the reason I said that was that the last 2 Central series were lost. 4 of 5 to Detroit and 2 of 3 to Cleveland at home. Losing another series to the Guards would be significant, in my opinion. Off to a good start last night. Obviously 1 series does not a season make but winning series is the key to a good season and these 5 games against Cleveland are important.

I keep thinking of Atlanta last year and a few years earlier the Washington Nats. They treaded water for months, made the playoffs and won the World Series when they didn't look like a threat at the All-Star break. There is a lot of season left and big leads can disappear. I do think it is important to win the series in Cleveland, but the coming three months probably will make us forget this five game set in northern Ohio.
