How funny is it that they are done with there high school season, and most of the kids in North Dakota have not had a game. Our kids have practiced outside about 5 times. Dumb.

Haha, crazy isn't it? Definitely puts draft prospects from colder states at a disadvantage. Harder to evaluate them when they have hardly played.

From Keith laws chat:

Odds that either Frazier or Meadows falls to the Red Sox at #7 in the draft are?

Given the top 5 I projected above, I think at least one gets there, very good chance both do.

Any chance Frazier or Meadows falls out of the top 10?

Very unlikely. Meadows more likely to slide than Frazier, but neither would get very far anyway. I think both guys and Reese McGuire go in teh 6-10 range.

From BA on Frazier:

Outfielder Clint Frazier is making a strong bid to be Baseball America’s High School Player of the Year. In a postseason series against Riverwood International Charter School (Sandy Springs, Ga.) he went 2-for-5 with two home runs as Loganville (Ga.) High advanced on a sweep. Frazier walked three times in the two games and is now batting .505/.612/1.165 with 16 home runs and 44 RBIs in 30 games.

16 HR's in 30 games, not too shabby. I'd take Frazier over Meadows, higher risk with him but his upside is much higher too IMO.

BA released three articles today involving the two Georgia OFers. Two of them are insider articles and the third is free.

The insider required article on Meadows:

Austin Meadows Is Ready And Waiting - BaseballAmerica.com

The insider required article on Frazier:

Clint Frazier Matures Quickly - BaseballAmerica.com

Free article on red heads and the draft:

Draft Features Rarest Of Prospects: Redheads - BaseballAmerica.com

Some interesting quotes about red heads.

“Anytime you’re going to make a significant personnel decision on behalf of the organization and you’re delving into waters that are not that populated, you have to wonder why,” Luhnow said. “The answer could be as simple as the percentage of redheaded people in the population. There just aren’t that many out there.

“If that’s the answer, OK. So be it. But there could be something more to it, and if there is, it’s certainly worth exploring. Is it because the parts of world where redheaded people typically come from don’t play baseball as much and it’s not part of the culture? I don’t know the answer to that. Is it because they’re fair-skinned and not as durable under the sun? I’ve heard all kinds of crazy theories. I haven’t done anything to verify any of them, to be honest with you. But it certainly is an interesting topic.”

“Has there ever been a redheaded quarterback in the NFL who’s really done well?” the coach said. “It sounds idiotic, but is there any way that could be a factor? We’ve wondered.”

Article from Mayo comparing Meadows vs Frazier. In the article it also talks about their friendly rivalry.

Frazier:

"During the summer I was out on a mission to prove to myself and everybody else that I was as good as, if not better than, Austin," said Frazier, who played with Meadows at various summer showcases, which he said helped him prepare for the extra attention they've received this spring. "I used him as motivation over the summer. I wasn't going to take a play off, because I knew he wasn't going to take a play off.

"I think having me there helped push him, too. [Coaches and instructors] were always challenging us to beat each other. I think we really pushed each other this year."

Meadows:

"It's been a really good relationship; it's a friendly competition. We played together the whole summer, through all the events, had fun with each other, helped each other out through the bad days and the good days, learning each other's strengths and weaknesses. We've played with each other since we were nine or 10 years old, so we know each other well on the baseball side of things. It's good to have him to support me, as well as me to support him."

The article also breaks down mayo's current and future grades for the two which are very different from Laws. Full article below:

From Jim Callis' chat today:

  • What kind of power grade would you give Clint Frazier? Thanks

Jim Callis: Future 70.

  • Any chance the Red Sox take Austin Meadows? He seems to be one of the most polarizing prospects in the top 10.

Jim Callis: Meadows may have the best all-around package of tools among high schoolers in this draft, though he hasn't quite had the monster senior season scouts expected. Wouldn't necessarily call him polarizing, but he could slip past the top 10 picks as clubs look for more advanced prospects (especially pitchers) at the top. I don't see the Red Sox taking him--think they'll have better options, including crosstown rival Clint Frazier.

From Laws chat today:

As a Padres fan, I'd be thrilled to see Frazier there at their pick...do you think this is likely or just couldn't place him anywhere above them?

[h=6]Klaw (12:10 PM)

[/h]

The market for him doesn't start till 7, and then he's not the top choice for any team until probably 13.

Austin Meadows move quickly or slowly through minors?

[h=6]Klaw (12:51 PM)

[/h]

Closer to "slowly."
