Twins Trade Deadline Targets: Relief Pitchers

I believe we’ve had a discussion before on HOW to address the Twins’ bullpen.

The next question is WHO to address it with.

Just like every year at the trade deadline, there are going to be many RPs on the move. Some big names, some not as big names. The Twins absolutely need RP help, so they will likely be in the running for some of these names.

Which RPs would you like to see the Twins go after at the deadline and why?

This is where this FO makes their money. I'd like to see them go after one VERY good established reliever. Then for the other one, let's identify a guy that is maybe being used as a mop up man, or a 5th starter type that throws hard and has a good slider or cutter, basically a hammer secondary pitch. Someone that can't do much for 4-6 innings but with a little tweaking of his pitch sequence could be a really nice reliever. We have some of them on our roster right now IMO.

I think there's real opportunity to kill two birds with one stone here and try to get a package of Montas, and Puk from the A's. It'll cost a lot but both holes are incredibly important to fill.

I honestly don't like this. For one, I don't think Montas is a top #1 or 2 type starter. For 2, it will cost a pile. If we are going to trade away top prospects for pitching, I want someone better OR more controllable than that guy. Get me a kid in their middle-late 20s that we will have some team control of, or find someone Verlander-ish that is an older former ace type that can maybe give you 1-2 stellar playoff starts.

Under the radar names are fine. Giving up any top prospects for a name doesn't make sense to me unless they are a true hammer.

Puk is not even arb eligible. He is not going anywhere unless it is a ridiculous deal

Bard from Colorado would be my top choice.  He won't cost as much as a rental.

If the Angels don't turn it around and decide to sell a bit, Aaron Loup would be worth a tire kick.  He's got a bigger contract, but he's a lefty and probably won't cost a prospect haul.

Finally, if Oakland would want to sell low on Trivino, he would be a longer term option.  His 7+ ERA doesn't seem to matchup with his sub-3 FIP.  I doubt Oakland trades him for low-ranked non-40 prospects, but it would be worth a call.

Interesting idea.  Sounds a little like when KC got Wade Davis although I don't remember what they did that made such a big difference with him.  Our own Griffon Jax will hopefully be a good example that backs up your plan.

I think Vanimal is spot on in his lists and assessments.  For me, I would prefer two rentals who are lockdown types with high leverage situational experience to go with Duran, and Jax who I think is underrated, as the Twins can always compete for them next off season in free agency and the prospect costs would be less.
