The Guardians, today’s opponent, are currently an exception to the three-syllable rule. They’re in second place just one game back of the Twins. However, being in second place in a division featuring the Little Sisters of the Poor, the Sartorial Challenged (white socks have been “out” for years) and the Phonetically Destitute is nothing to write home about.

Not baseball, but very Minnesotan: Timberwolves.

I've had two shoulder impingements one in the late 1990s, a 2nd around 2005 or 6 or so. One from lifting heavy boxes at work, the other from playing softball. And both were debilitating to the point that I couldn't raise my arm up beyond a certain point without pain. I couldn't even lift a pitcher of water off the counter. And I certainly couldn't do any heavy lifting, and I couldn't play tennis or softball. Granted, it didn't take long to recover ... a couple weeks ... but it's not some new or fancy terminology and has been around for a while. I guess maybe only those who have had this would understand, but, for my course of treatment ... anti-inflammatories and rest ... followed by some rehab. It was a couple of weeks. It's a legit thing and not really all that fancy. And it is a bigger deal than just 'he has an ache throw some ice on it, he has an owie.' If not dealt with properly it could cause bigger problems, such as rotator cuff issues ... you want someone to go out for that because you think he could/should play through it with some ice on the owie? It also could be an indicator that something more serious is going on, but, I doubt it.

But, rest is a big part of the treatment. IL-ing someone with an impingement is the right thing to do. They won't be available to play for 10days-2 weeks.

I see my attempt at sarcasm missed the mark. I assure you I did not mean to suggest players should play if injured but rather that the Twins' have taken to identifying most injuries as "impingements", and therefore have made it difficult for fans to understand what the injury is and how serious it is. And I would never ridicule anyone for being injured. Personally I've suffered a torn ACL (football), cartilage damage in the other knee (volleyball), a cracked wrist (more football) a broken ankle that never healed right (basketball), a broken shoulder (horse training), a slipped disc (shoveling horse manure - something I've also learned to do when speaking), bicipital tendinitis (volleyball) that left me unable to lift my right arm for months (good thing I'm ambidextrous) and bone bruises to my hip and ribs from a motorcycle accident. Believe me, I know pain. There's a reason why I am very familiar with anti-inflammatories (two Advil every night with my nighty-night cookies and milk) and Irish whiskey.

But if for no other reason than that my wife of almost forty years has MD. I see pain in her eyes every day.

So if I've offended you, or others, for trying to make light of injuries, I apologize for my perceived insensitivity.

Pretty bad start in what's increasingly looking like a must-win series.

Let's hope the team brought the bats against Civale, who's been very very hittable this year. Dude's got a 7.34 ERA, no excuse not to torch this guy. He's Cleveland's Matt Shoemaker.
