Impingement - having an effect or impact, especially a negative one

Seems the Twins have adopted a new three-syllable word to replace an old, out-of-fashion one-syllable term. Players used to get stiff, or sore in the old days. Now they get impingements. Advanced metrics or something I guess. A guy feels a pull in his hip; impingement. A pitcher feels a twinge in his elbow; impingement. Another pitcher feels a tightness in the shoulder of his throwing arm; impingement. Makes you wonder if impingement isn’t a new viral epidemic.

Impingement does sound more serious than “strain”, or “ache”, or “sore” doesn’t it? A guy’s got a sore arm, big deal. Throws some ice on it. The same guy reports an impingement and we think he’s headed for the IL.

Now being somewhat of a wordsmith myself, I have nothing against upscaling our vocabulary, but baseball is merely a sport for cripessakes, something to occupy our free time! It isn’t like all baseball fans are rocket scientists ((TD members excluded of course) so using a bigger word doesn’t necessarily convey greater understanding. In fact, it usually only adds confusion. Think of the last time you visited your attorney. Or asked a politician for their opinion. I bet you came away with a mental impingement both times.

Once upon a time when all maidens were fair, men were gentlemanly and every child was precocious I made a brief but painful foray into the publishing business. It was there I learned (pain is a great teacher) that the average American reads at an 8th grade level and was thus advised by a journalism professor to use KISS (keep it simple, stupid) when writing and editing newspaper copy. No big words when a shorter one will do, no complex sentences, no lengthy descriptions, etc. etc. In fact, the professor said, “If you can get by with a grunt, go for it. Or, in other words,” he added with a wry twist to his upper lip, “convey your intent with a brief monosyllabic vocalization if the opportunity should present itself.”

So, Rocco, here's some advice; know your audience, drop the upscale injury vocab, go with something the average baseball fan can understand; “He’s got an owie” will suffice for many of us.

What’s any of this have to do with today’s game? Well, Cleveland has an impingement; their team name.

Team names are all about marketing; “branding” the experts like to call it. As fortune would have it one of my daughters is a marketing guru so I kind of know this stuff; some sort of reverse osmosis phenomenon I suppose. Anyway, she says three and four syllable “brands” can be hard to remember for the weak-minded.

“Guardian” has three syllables. Name me the other major league baseball teams that have three syllables in their team name. I’ll save you the trouble. I can think of four others, the Athletics, the Mariners, the Orioles and the Nationals.

So what? Think about it. The Athletics, dead last in the AL West; the Orioles, dead last in the AL East; the Nationals, dead last in the NL East and the Mariners second from the bottom in the AL West and just a smelly odor above the Athletics.

What’s that tell us? Well, three-syllable team names obviously suck. Ergo, therefore, heretofore, whatsoever and hocus pocus, when it comes to winning three-syllable teams all have a serious impingement. So let's take advantage of it.

The Guardians, today’s opponent, are currently an exception to the three-syllable rule. They’re in second place just one game back of the Twins. However, being in second place in a division featuring the Little Sisters of the Poor, the Sartorial Challenged (white socks have been “out” for years) and the Phonetically Destitute is nothing to write home about.

So Rocco, the Guardians are impinged. That means we should beat them. Just don’t impinge our team with “rest” days and throw-away games while taking them on. Put your best line-up out there every game. In other words, pretend it’s the play-offs (it may be) and put all hands on deck. Go for the sweep.

Pitching Today

Twins:  Joe Ryan  5-3  ERA 2.81  45 K

Cleveland: The Dreaded TBD

Sorry, but I have a mindless foray into the outside world scheduled for today and as of the time of this writing line-ups haven’t yet been posted. Someone else will have to step up, give a hundred and ten percent, take one for the Gipper and post lineups later. Much obliged.

Another obtuse new creation is pitcher "location"

His location is he is standing on the mound, period; his control over his pitches is what they used to say, before their grammar was reduced to the level of some one who flunked sixth grade three times.

I know it is still early but I'd like to see a statement made. Start our best line up every day and take 7 out of 8 from them these next 11 days, and 2 months from now look back and say this is when we buried them and took the division momentum for good. Let's go Rocco. Play to win every inning in every game!

I've had two shoulder impingements one in the late 1990s, a 2nd around 2005 or 6 or so. One from lifting heavy boxes at work, the other from playing softball. And both were debilitating to the point that I couldn't raise my arm up beyond a certain point without pain. I couldn't even lift a pitcher of water off the counter. And I certainly couldn't do any heavy lifting, and I couldn't play tennis or softball. Granted, it didn't take long to recover ... a couple weeks ... but it's not some new or fancy terminology and has been around for a while. I guess maybe only those who have had this would understand, but, for my course of treatment ... anti-inflammatories and rest ... followed by some rehab. It was a couple of weeks. It's a legit thing and not really all that fancy. And it is a bigger deal than just 'he has an ache throw some ice on it, he has an owie.' If not dealt with properly it could cause bigger problems, such as rotator cuff issues ... you want someone to go out for that because you think he could/should play through it with some ice on the owie? It also could be an indicator that something more serious is going on, but, I doubt it.

But, rest is a big part of the treatment. IL-ing someone with an impingement is the right thing to do. They won't be available to play for 10days-2 weeks.

In recent history we've had a tough time with lowly KC & DET. IDK if they especially get up for us or we underrate them & don't prepare properly, most likely both.

At the same time we are CLE's krytonite. Do we have 8 games coming up? I predict that we'll take 5-6 games out those 8.

Being division rivals probably has a lot to do with it too.  Familiarity tends to limit the impact overall record has in many cases.

Off the top of my head scouting report on the Guardians. They have been surprisingly good so far this year. Surprises include two or three position players who have stepped up and a really good bullpen anchored by Clase, who is probably going to be very good for a long while. The starting rotation was viewed as their top strength going in and has been okay, but not really exceeded expectations. This club is probably more vulnerable to injuries than most, but right now they are playing the best ball of anyone in the AL Central.

I knew Clase' would be a good one when CLE traded for him

Ramirez going to play this series? I haven't seen any news today about his availability. I know they were attempting to have him ready for this series by sitting for the weekend, but haven't seen if he'll be back or not. That's a big bat to have either in the lineup or out. Could be key to the series.

Which is why they rested him. Not that I wish anyone ill but I kind of hope he’s not ready

Haven't seen anything about the Guardians (I just hate that!) line up other than Civale is supposedly starting, but according to MLB, this is ours:

Arraez 2B

Buxton CF

Correa SS

Kepler RF

Sanchez DH

Urshela 3B

Kirilloff 1B

Celestino LF

Jeffers C

And Ryan pitching

Sanchez and Celestino in and no Larnach? I'd much rather see Trevor in there, but I do see that in Civale's splits that he has struggled against right handed hitters. Or, maybe this indicates that Larnach will be heading across the river when Polanco returns from the IL.

Update. MLB just posted Cleve's line up:

Kwan LF

Rosario SS

Ramirez 3B

Naylor 1B

Gonzalez RF

Reyes DH

Gimenez 2b

Hedges C

Straw CF

Civale and Reyes are being activated from the IL. Ramirez is playing, was there any doubt? This series should be fun.

If Guardians has 3 syllables, how many does Patriots have?

Sept. 1st :)

The only time I remember in which a first-place team was genuinely trying to catch a second-place team occurred on September 7-10, 1978 at Fenway Park.  And it was amplified in importance because of the opposing teams.

I'm enjoying this experiment so far...
