The Road Ahead for the Twins

Recommended Posts

Well I think we all knew that either Cleveland or Chicago was going to make a move at some point.  After today it'll either be a 1 game or 2 game lead (Twins losing 7 - 1 at this point and likely will loose the rubber to AZ).  IMHO, this is not the end of the world when you consider all the injuries/COVID that the team has had to endure over the last few weeks.  It could have been a lot worse!  The Twins have a powerful offense.  Pitching is touch-n-go, but with Gray back and Bundy showing some signs of resurgence, I like the Twinkies chances going into the All Star break and beyond.  Yes, perhaps a trade for a good relief P or two.  But don't talk to me about trading Correa or Arreaz!  These guys are too essential to let go IMHO.  Anyway, it's fun to see our Twins being competitive again. Happy Fathers Day to all the fathers in the world!

I don't think the Twins would consider trading Correa and trading Arreaz could be suicidal (remember the Lou Brock trade you oldsters). Arreaz could be a league leader for several years along the lines of Wade Boggs or even Tony Gwynn. I think the Twins lead is on very shaky ground and the White Sox will pass them if they ever get healthy. I'm not worried about the Indians though their young players have done well. I'm more worried about the East and West teams who could make the wild card and knock us out of that contention.

You are not worried about the Guardians when they are the team that is 1 game back and they play the Twins 8 games in 10 days to close out the month? Maybe you are correct but unless the Twins win at least 5 of those 8 games you may be disappointed. There is something about this Twins team that makes it seem they are always on the brink of a tail spin. The rest of June should either dispel that or confirm it.

I assume this is a “contending season” so trading Correa would be idiotic. Do not trade Arraez. Nope. Never. Cats and dogs should be friends before that should happen.

As you said, the Twins have dealt with several injuries. With their key starters (Correa, Polanco) back, the gap between them and Cleveland should grow. Cleveland is not that good.

It'll be interesting, that's for sure. We've bounced between extremes this season - a 4-8 start, two win streaks of 6+ games - and now we're going to face the new rising star of the AL Central. If there's some veteran grit and savvy in this team, now would be a good time for it to lead the way.

But, regardless of what happens in these next ten games, this pitching staff just isn't good enough to win any division in baseball. Considering that there are no reinforcements ready at AAA, Falvey and Levine should be very busy over the next few weeks pondering trades. Injuries and a stalled pitching pipeline means the door is still wide open for Chicago and Cleveland.

When the Twins have a LOT of shut-outs against them, along with getting blown out with one or two runs, pitching is not the problem so many are trying to make it.

Excuse me; I meant Guardians. Forgot Cleveland was an expansion team. Should not be a problem. Reconvening on 7/1 is a good idea.

Thanks … fixed it for you ? … it will take some time to get used to

Totally off topic but, being from DC I also follow the ex Redskins, now Commanders, after being called Football Team. Maybe these "Native American" names have actually been offensive to some but the replacement names are very hard to swallow never mind get used to. As stated many times I follow the Twins as being the "Old" Senators. Now that name was offensive.

Now we get to see how the Twins will respond (or not) over the next 15 games.  8 against the Indians (5 away) and 3 against the White Sox (all away).  We'd be lucky to go .500 over that stretch.  But more than likely we'll be at least two games behind Cleveland and even with the Sox.  Hope springs eternal...

What is disconcerting is that the Central schedule was supposed to be the path to the Central championship. Now it seems to be the big obstacle starting with losing 4 of 5 to Detroit and now the first 2 to Cleveland at home. This could be the beginning of the end and first place already in the rear view mirror. Baldelli has wrecked the bull pen with his refusal to trust the starters to even go 5. Hey Rocco, your spread sheets don't get tired arms. And to paraphrase an ex player and White Sox broadcaster, "If the Twins lose to the Guardians (I love that name, moderator ) tonight this season is OVER".
