Twins Minor League Week in Review (6/7-6/13): Saints Sweep Red Wings

Recommended Posts

It was another extremely busy week of action in the Twins minor league system. We've got you covered with some stats, but also catch you up on a couple of key injury concerns. From the Saints sending a message to the Rochester Red Wings that they are now the Twins Triple-A affiliate, to Wichita, to Cedar Rapids, and down to the Dominican Republic. Find out what's going on in the Twins minor leagues.

These Minor League Week in Reviews are getting long. They are filled with how Twins minor leaguers, from the Triple-A St. Paul Saints, down to the 17 and 18-year-old kids playing in the Dominican Summer League. Who played really well? How did the teams perform. While wins and losses are secondary to player development, it is a part of the game that matters to the players. There were several transactions on Monday. Both Rookie League affiliates played on Monday morning. There has been a lot of Twins minor league coverage all week, so be sure to keep checking back.

Of course, we also look at the current Top 20 Twins prospects, and we enjoy seeing them do well. But, we (or at least I am) are just as excited to hear that a player like Elliot Soto is being called up by the Twins. Fun stories!

If you missed it, read Nick's Twins Week in Review after you've read about the minor league week.

Season: 30-29 overall, 6th place out of ten teams in the International League West. They are 6.0 games behind Nashville. Despite the rough week, Rochester remains in first place, a half-game ahead of Lehigh Valley.

The Saints were struggling, but it’s fair to say that they are playing much better now. They began the week at 24-29. The former Twins Triple-A affiliate, the Rochester Red Wings, came to St. Paul leading the East division of the International League. The Saints swept the series and are now back over .500 at 30-29. In reality, the Saints completely dominated #OldFriend Matthew Lecroy’s squad. They outscored the Wings 48-23. They reached double-digits in runs scored three times. Aside from a walk-off win on Thursday, none of the other games were particularly close. The Red Wings still lead their division by 1/2 game.

  • Mario Sanchez had a four-inning save this week. He gave up no runs and no hits. He walked one and struck out six batters.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Hitter of the Week: OF/1B Alex Kirilloff, St. Paul Saints
Why is Alex Kirilloff such a great hitter? Let me count the ways.

Last week, Kirilloff played in all six Saints wins. He went 9-for-24 and hit .475/.423/.792 (1.215) with a double, three homers, and seven RBI. He was the Twins choice for hitter of the week the previous, but we went with Spencer Steer. This week, the Twins went with Steer, and we are taking Kirilloff.

Granted, he shouldn’t be in the minors. That wasn’t the plan. The plan was that his surgically-repaired wrist would be completely healed, and he would be hitting well in the middle of the Twins lineup. Instead, he went on the IL with some wrist pain, found out it wasn’t anything structural and was sent to St. Paul to basically get at-bats and regain confidence.

In 25 games since he was optioned, he has hit .384/.465/.717 (1.182) with six doubles, nine homers, and 26 RBI. He also has 14 walks to go with 18 strikeouts. Seven of the home runs have come in the past nine games.

And as soon as a position opens up and he can get very regular playing time, the former top pitch  will  turn to the big leagues.

Pitcher of the Week: RHP Louie Varland, Wichita Wind Surge
At 24, Varland is exactly one month younger than Alex Kirilloff. Their paths have been different, but they are both on the path to Target Field. Varland was a terrific pitcher at South St. Paul before joining his brother Gus at Concordia University in St. Paul. The Twins made him their15th round pick in 2019. He was the organization's minor league pitcher of the year last year, per the Twins and Twins Daily.

This year, he has had outings on both sides of the spectrum. Generally speaking, it tends to be pretty directly tied to his control. Overall, he is 5-1 with a 3.24 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. In 58 1/3 innings, he has given up 46 hits (9 homers), walked 24, and struck out 71 batters. His fastball is sitting 94-96 mph and has touched 97 on occasions. His slider is generally a plus-pitch for him, and his changeup has had mixed results, but there have been several very good days.

Please feel free to ask questions and discuss the players and the teams in the COMMENTS below.

I’m extremely disappointed the Twins did not bring up Kirilloff today. No room for him? Find room! AK has done everything the Twins have asked him to do-hit and hit for power. He is a major piece of the Twins future-don’t screw with his head and make him wait for one of the other OFers to get hurt.

Soto was a temporary call-up. Kirilloff should be up once the Twins need to go to 13 pitchers.

Seth: Any notables we should be getting excited about in FCL Play, guys that should be moved up once the draft happens and some names are jettisoned from various rosters?

Sad to see Gore move backwards. Had such hopes for him, but now looks like he will probably walk elsewhere come 2023. Kudos to Sisk getting the advancement.

Really, daily and weekly, there's not a lot to not like with these reports. The Twins system is having resounding success and so many guys are having good/great seasons. I understand the Twins aren't exactly top heavy with TOP 100 types, but the depth is outstanding. And FWIW, top 100 players don't always turn out, or turn out to be the best. So quantity of prospects is a very good thing.

Only big bummers I  can come up with is Balazovic not yet looking like his expected self, Canterino on the DL, and Rodriguez now hurt for the year.

A few bullet points:

1] I've been disappointed in Sands this year. After his first couple of turns at St Paul, he just hasn't looked the same. For whatever reason, the consistency isn't there like I expected. I NEVER give up on a rookie pitcher at the ML level after their debut season. History has shown it can take a while to settle in. Berrios is a great example. I've seen enough of him to know he has the stuff to succeed at the highest level, but I'm starting to see him as potentially another Jax, his stuff playing up better in shorter stints. Still, he really looked solid at times in his last start against Tampa. Not going to give up on him yet.

2] Loved what I saw of Palacios defensively when he was up. He actually hit in the low minors before his trade to Tampa for Odorizzi. And while he didn't hit a lick there, he suddenly started hitting back in the Twins organization in 2021, and even flashed some pop/power. And he's been doing the same with St Paul this year. I think his ability to hit at the ML level is clearly TBD. As is any future role with the Twins, all the more complicated by the injury to Lewis. I'm glad there was no rule 5 this year as we may have lost him. He's absolutely going to be a 40 man add this offseason for many reasons.

3] The Twins are going to have a very interest conundrum, but a good one, in 2023 in regard to bench spots. Arraez is really a regular, and isn't going anywhere, of course. Gordon has become a very useful multi-purpose player who shows potential to still get better even. But Steer is going to force his way on to the club sooner or later. I'm not saying he's better than or is going to push Miranda, but he potentially could. I think there's room for both. I wish I knew how well he can fill in at SS, because that really increases his value if he's at least OK there. I'd like to think he can learn a little 1B, despite being just under 6 foot. If so, he's a 4 position player with a bat and power and potential.

And Julien is just behind him. Again, I'm uncertain as to his defense, but he's 1B/2B/3B/LF who can hit, has an amazing OB ability, speed, and decent power. He could be an excellent 10th man, potentially, with all around offensive ability. And while a bit of a late riser, and after a solid 2021 and AFL, Hellman is suddenly reaching new heights of consistent production here in 2022. The Twins are about to be flush is versatile bench options who have real offensive and potential starting ability. Might as well throw Palacios in to that group as well.

4] I really hope the Twins stick with CES at 3B for as long as possible. I understand he's not a great athlete and is a bat first player. But from all reports I've read he's got a strong arm and fairly soft hands. Are his errors due to footwork? Wild throws despite a strong arm? Lack of basic fundamentals? This is only his first year of full season work. I would never want to compare a 2nd year prospect to great players like Gaetti or Koskie, but one had hands of stone and the other was too stiff to play 3B. IMO, keep him at 3B for as long as possible and keep working with him before transitioning him to 1B.

5] I really have NO CLUE what to expect from Hamilton, Isola, or Camargo as potential future catchers in the system, but I'd sure like "someone in the know" to offer up an honest breakdown of their potential. I understand catchers are often "built" rather than drafted as high prospects. It's one of the most difficult positions to draft and project. But these 3 seem to be rising up as the cream of the prospect crop in the system right now.

6] I know that most draftees play little, if at all, once signed their rookie years. And the elimination of the traditional rookie leagues has changed normal procedures we took for granted in the past. But I'm frustrated by the draft being pushed back to July. It feels like kids are going to get a late introduction and it might make mid year promotions more difficult.

Completely understand your frustration. I'm as big of an AK believer and fan as you will find. I think he's a major part of the Twins lineup for the next 5-8+ years along with Larnach and probably Miranda as well. But I applaud the Twins for being patient and just letting him "feel good" mentally and physically and just rake at AAA to get ready.

But there is a roster crunch/concern that is real right now. Whether the Twins go to 13 position players NOW, or when they are forced to in a week, there is ONE position player spot open. Unless someone goes on the IL, or is just moved, it's either Kirilloff or Garlick for the last spot. AK seems like the immediate answer because of his numbers and his importance for the future, but Garlick is an OK OF defensively who RAKES against LHP, which remains a confounding issue for the Twins in which there is no immediate answer.

I really think that the guys that would have moved up from the FCL to Ft. Myers have already done that recently (Roberto, Aguiar, Cespedes, etc.). I don't know enough about the pitchers, but with the Twins draft strategy, may just wait for the draft and send a couple of college pitchers there. John Lavallee might be the only 2021 college draft pick that isn't in FM yet, so I think he is a possibility.

Great summary as usual, Seth.  Couple of comments.  Sisk has been lights out in Wichita this year, especially against left handed hitters, many of whom almost appear lost at the plate.  My goodness, they are hitting .082 against him.  IMHO, he could be a left handed specialist at Target Field later this summer if all goes well for him.  Second, it was great to see Soto promoted.  Everyone raves about him as a teammate and a teacher.  Do you think the Twins will add him to the coaching staff somewhere in the minors when he finishes his playing career?  Third, Festa continues to impress--BTW you have two lines for him in the prospect summaries :).  I have not seen him live or much on MiLB TV.  Do you see him as a starter or reliever long term?  Thanks again for all your work.

I think Varland is the best starting pitcher at the AA level right now.  With SWR a fairly close second and you could argue that with SWR 3 years younger he is the better pitcher but for me right now today it is Louie.  Varland has a better K rate and he looks more ready IMO. Having pitches that miss bats is the best indicator for moving up IMO and Louie has that.  I still am concerned he ends up a reliever but he has proven me wrong since he first started until now so maybe he does make it as a starter.

I know Canterino has elite stats at AA but given he is injured yet again he seems destined for the pen, like Duran.  Most of the scouting reports I saw coming out of the draft had Canterino as a reliever and Fangraphs felt he was likely a reliever as well.  I think it is time for the Twins to stop fighting it and make Canterino a reliever.  Another elite relief arm to go with Duran can only help this team.

I am anxious to see what SGL, Povich and maybe Headrick or Festa can do at AA.  They all have pitched well at High A and seem to have solid potential to be elite at the next level.  Probably not right away but hopefully in time.

I know how much work goes into these weekly reports, Seth.  Thank you!

Any chance the Bonilla pitching in the DSL is related to the Bonilla who was in the organization for many years awhile ago?

Cannot tell you how happy I am for the entire Saints team and organization.  Really great seeing them recover so they can keep CHS Field filled with fans.  And what a butt kicking they put on a first place Red Wings team, yahooooo!

Don't know what winning at nearly every level means for the future of the Twins, but this entire organization is on fire.  I know two or three huge prospects may mean more than overall team success, however, it is very encouraging to see all this success.  As for getting AK back with the Twins, I think they are going to have to complete a trade to do so.  Sure appears Arraez is establishing himself as their first baseman of today and tomorrow.  So that puts AK into a corner outfield spot and fill-in at first when Luis needs a break.  With Larnach and Keps manning the corners, some move/injury is going to be needed to open  a spot.

Also know it is too early to mean anything, but interesting seeing Michel doing well to start his career.

Shouldn't Winder be making a second rehab start with the Saints this week?

Should be about time to start seeing more promotions. Glad to see Sisk start things off by moving to AAA. He's had a great year and may add to the Twins options in lefty relief along with Moran and Coulombe. Surely we will see Canterino move up soon? He's proved all that he can at AA and should be in line for a late summer debut in relief for the Twins if he continues to pitch well.

Varland should also be moving up, David Festa should be advancing to take his place, and Travis Adams should be moving up to take his.

There are two lines for several of the prospects. Separates how they did with different teams.

Sisk has been really good. Not sure he'd be an option this year, especially with the limit on # of pitchers on a 26-man roster. Thielbar's been good. Coulombe is a big leaguer. Moran has a ton of potential. But he has certainly put himself next in line as a lefty out of the bullpen..

As for Soto,.. I don't know if he's got any connection to the Twins front office. He's been around a long time, knows a lot of people. I think he could be a coach if he wants, but if that's the case, he should have a lot of options.

Assuming you mean former Twins minor league pitcher and then minor league pitching coach Henry Bonilla, I would guess no relation.

Michel got a nice signing bonus. He did OK last year in the DSL... He and De Andrade might ideally move up together as long as they can.

Any news on the injured McCleod, and Rijo?  Also any news on Urbina's VISA issues?  Absolute bummer that Rodriguez has such a bad leg injury as he was set to move up for sure and A ball is struggling without him.

Rijo started once last week for the FCL Twins. Will probably do another rehab game or two and then get back to Cedar Rapids. McLeod only had TJ surgery in March. But that should put him on track to pitch soon after opening day.
