Crushing news for Lewis.   A terrible break for such a promising young talent.  Very sad to see this news.

LOP and Linus have alluded to this, and I'm going to say it too. This is what can happen when you put a player in a position (both in the fielding sense and in the general sense) with which he is not familiar. This is an especially egregious mistake by Baldelli and by the front office when taking into account the fact that Lewis is one of the most important pieces of the future of this franchise. Even if he had stayed on the MLB roster this year it probably would have only made a difference of one or two wins this season. How many future wins has this injury cost us with decreased performance and decreased longevity when compared with improving his shortstop skills in AAA? More than one or two. Now Lewis and the franchise are paying the price for a very bad mistake, and Baldelli and Falvine owe Lewis and the fans a very big apology.

I just watched the play again (multiple times) on YouTube and I agree that it's unclear.  It appears that his shoulder and head were the primary points of contact with the wall.  My thought is that he hurt the knee when he recoiled off the wall.  It didn't look to me like his knee ever made contact with the wall.

Whew, sounds like we got lucky Gordon didn't get hurt with his position moves. And Miranda. Throw in Arraez too.  Guys move all over the place in the minors ( some play cf in the AFL) and have to be ready to do it in the majors. If that knee was that unstable it was going to happen anyway. I hate the way it happened too, but that's baseball.  Ridiculous to blame the Twins for trying to get their hottest playing prospects time in the majors.   See you next year Royce, hope the healing goes quick.

Surgery, then rehab rehab rehab, for twelve freeeekin months... What is Royce Lewis going to do with all his free time? Can he sing or paint? Will he do some community work? Appear as a guest commentator with Dick Bremmer? 

I would love to see him show up at Little League parks in the Twin Cities, to give fielding and hitting tips to kids. I bet he'd love that, too. Imagine getting a key tip on how to throw a ball from Royce Lewis. Any little kid would die for that. 

Pass along some of your pro knowledge to kids, Royce. It will make your rehab year a joyful time.

Earlier today I posted that Lewis was untouchable as I expected the knee was a minor thing... my opinion is 180* at this point.

Other teams probably have the same opinion as you. Unfortunately his trade value has taken a huge hit and is probably at an all-time low right now. Twins won't trade him - they simply won't receive anything close in terms of value.

The thought that his knee would have been injured anyway is speculative, but it's probably not an unfair point. The difference between Lewis and the other players you mention is that he is our future shortstop and that's where he should have been playing pretty much full time. Shortstop is the most important defensive position other than catcher and when you have a player who belongs there that's where he should play. Let other players be the ones who move around.

And it’s just as speculative what you are saying, too. Injuries happen. Period. It’s extremely unfortunate, mostly for Royce, but it’s just as speculative to say he wouldn’t have been injured if he weren’t out there. Injuries happen. And no, he was not necessarily our future SS. I don’t agree that he would necessarily remained a SS for the reason you stated … it’s one of the most important defensive position. In equally short sample sizes, it was noticeable that Palacios was better at the position, and that Correa is better than both.

What a bummer. Royce seems like such a good dude, and did such a great job coming back from the first knee injury. He did everything right, had a great start to his season in AAA after a long layoff from actual games, did a terrific job when called up for his first taste of the majors, and now he's back dealing with another significant injury. Terribly unfair.

But one of the reasons we're all so drawn to Royce is that amazing attitude, and right out the gate he seems to be handling it as well as anyone could hope. If anyone can bounce back from this, you just feel like it's Royce Lewis. Hate that this happened for him, it's monstrously unfair. Good luck to him in his recovery.

Again, he collects major league salary for this season. Next season, he will get a standard major/minor (40-man pay) contract, paying him major league pay thru his injury and rehab. Once he is optioned, he would get reduced pay and lose service time.

So because of his time in the minors this season, and his time in the minors next season, the Twins will still have him, I believe, for six more seasons. I don't think he will make the cut-off, but let's do one year at a time.

But it also means the Twins will need a shortstop next season can only hope that Royce gets in shape in May and June to play July-September with decent stats and a late-September callup and, hopefully, ability to play in 2024.

Of course, now is the time for Austin Martin to shine at shortstop, Jermaine Palacios to play his heart out in St. Paul, Spencer Steer to play more shortstop than 2B or 3B, or Gordon to be ready with his glove if the opportunity rpesents itself.

I imagine Correa MIGHT stay if his pot is sweetened. But I also expect he will explore long-term contract options.

No doubt in my mind, Rosterman, that the Twins starting shortstop next opening day will be either Carlos Correa or Palacios.

As I said in the other thread, because we need lots of the same threads here for some reason, accidents happen. Why is that so hard to accept? No one did anything wrong. I feel bad for Lewis. Good luck to him in his recovery.

From the sounds of it you would have been happy leaving him in AAA all year, regardless of how he was playing, if Correa is healthy all year.  I like that they were aggressive. Offense was needed at the time,  and our wunderkid had already shown he was ready.   It felt very un-twins like at the time and that excites me.  I hope the fo continues to get guys to the majors when the players show they are ready.  Most of time they won't be blocked,  but when they are get creative.

We need Lewis, wish him another speedy recovery and come back stronger & better than ever, I'm super frustrated with the decision of placing Lewis in the OF. 3B, 2B or I can see where we can safely have keep his bat in the line-up but OF, we are well manned there and it's a risky position especially for some one who just came back from major knee surgery. And what equally gets me is after Lewis's injury, Baldelli stated that he Lewis will return to the OF as soon as he gets better. It befuddles me how Baldelli, after he makes a bonehead mistake he'll keep on doubling (or more) down on it.

Why is there an impression that if he spent some time playing other positions... he can no longer be our SS of the future? 

It eludes me where the thought comes from. It doesn't matter how much time elapses... he can return to SS if we need him to play there. 

Playing different positions will not ruin his future SS career. 

Well... other than the running into the CF wall thing.

I'm talking about once Lewis is healthy and back on the field. I'd trade him the moment the Twins can get a decent offer.

Yeah, I'm thinking to myself: what in the $@%! is he doing playing Center field?? Looked as though his right leg hit the ground on an awkward angle just as he hit the wall. Is it just all of that, or are some guys bodies more susceptible to certain injuries?
