Bundy’s Performance Tonight

Recommended Posts

Bundy goes up against Cole tonight. What would a reasonable performance look like for a back end start against an ace. I looked at the game scores of Yankee opposing starters this year. Is a game score at the 25 percentile one that we should expect from a starter in the back end of our rotation. That game score was 40 to 41 and is owned by Berrios and Kikuchi. Berrios (41) pitched 5.1 innings and gave up 4 runs. Kikuchi pitched 3.1 innings and gave up 3 runs - 2 earned. Berrios had another 2nd quartile start a little closer to the median. He pitched 5 innings and gave up 3 runs. The median game score against the Yankees is 54. Garcia pitched 5 innings and gave up 2 runs. The average game score is 49.5. Zimmerman’s 50 was 6.1 innings and 4 runs given up. The Yankees do some damage.

Cole Sands game score was 30. He out pitched Ohtani’s 28 from a week earlier. Archer was just above the median at 57. Where does Bundy need to fit? Should we hope for an average level performance and expect one at the 25th percentile?

Neither is probably enough to be Cole. Almost all of Cole’s game scores are above the average start against the Yankees. Cole had a 43 on April 19.

Bundy needs to be at least as good as Archer was yesterday.  That probably still isn't enough, but probably gives them a fighting chance if Cole is Cole tonight.

I agree. Archer’s performance was in the top half of pitching performances against the Yankees this year. Is above the median performance a reasonable expectation from a number 4 or 5 starter?

No, probably not, but that's likely what is required.  He's caught lightning in a bottle before this season, so it's at least possible.

I think Archer got away with a lot of pitchers in the heart of the plate, but he must have been keeping the hitters off balance enough because he never paid for it.  So, perhaps the right game plan can do the trick?

My expectations for Bundy tonight are pretty low. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he gets lit up right away in the 1st inning. His confidence and body language looked like a totally beaten man the last time out. If by some miracle, he can somehow get thru 4 innings and only give up 3 to 5 runs, I'd consider it a major success. Gotta hope for the best tonight, and hope Cole has an off night just like Cortes did.

Hopefully 5 innings and less than 5 runs. That's what I would consider a success.

4-5 IP, 4 runs or less I'll be content. All we need is the bare minimum to stay competitive and lean on our bats the rest of the way. Our lineup looks solid tonight I'm hoping we can take it to Cole. As good as he is, he is known to have a poor outing here and there. He's very human and we proved yesterday we can handle top of the league SP.

I guess Bundy pitched well enough, since they had a four run lead when he came out. It's frustrating when the team hits five homers off one of the game's top starters and still loses. It's pretty dang hard for Rocco to manage the bullpen when everyone he brings in gives up runs left and right.

Maybe he needs to bring them in right and left, and get the platoon advantage. :)
