For today's game thread content, let’s flash back to September of last year, to a certain recap thread of a Twins-Yankees matchup: 9/13/21. This is a post from me after the Twins lost after starting the game with a 4-0 lead:

Quote

That's it... I might just bet on a sports game for the first time in 2022 and put money on the Yankees every single time they play the Twins. Either I will make a profit since the Twins are guaranteed to poop themselves every time they play New York, or I will break the Twins' horrible streak by losing money. A win-win, perhaps. This is coming from someone who has sworn off gambling

The Yankees-Twins matchups have transcended common sense. They've won something like 80% of their games against us in the past 20-25 years. Unless that is priced into the line, I'm willing to break my embargo.

The time has come, folks. The Twins have continued to flounder against the Yanks, and now it is time for countermeasures. As a fan, this is the only thing I can do – use my bad luck against the Yankees! Starting yesterday, I (legally, mind you) bet on the Yankees and made a nice chunk of money. I will do the same the next two days, and hope that this will backfire and instead get the Twins to win. I see this as a win-win situation: I only put in money I was willing to lose, and so if the Twins win, I think it’ll be worth it!

I do not recommend you follow suit unless you put down money you are okay with losing, as I don’t want to recommend gambling to anyone. And if you are ever going to bet on something, ensure it is a positive EV bet!

So when the Twins somehow pull off a win today, I will take all the credit as the one who jinxed the Yankees into losing the game! You can send me your thanks in advance.

Now, let’s look at the matchup for this one:

Twins-Yanks.png.45f75526d3cbb2bd1811ae1e9dbe2b82.png

Looks like only Arraez and Polanco have any experience facing Cortes, with Arraez being the only one to have a hit off him. Let’s hope our hitting against good starting pitcher continues today. On the other side, Donaldson has seen Archer a whopping 47 times and while he’s had 3 HRs, Archer usually bests him.

Alright Twins, let’s beat the Yankees for once… er, well, I’d normally say that, but now my interests are conflicted. Hmmm, maybe it’s not quite of a win-win situation as I thought.

Nitpic, perhaps, but why is Correa DHing?

I realize he's just off the covid list, but he can't play SS? We're worse defensively, and effectively swap Sanchez at DH for Gordon.

I often don't understand Rocco's bench use. What am I missing?

Anywhoo, go Twins. The worm is long overdue to turn.

Chief...you're not missing anything, and it's not nit-picking either. It just makes absolutely zero sense not to have CC at short. I really believe Rocco's master plan...is to not have any plan.

Oh, and I hope you learn your lesson (again) about gambling on sports, dano.

Again? Are you referring to yesterday, or some other time?

Look, it's up to the Twins to start beating the Yankees. They can feel free to any time, and then it will be a lesson learned and I'll stop.

It was a joke, Dan.  A little riff off your quote from last year.

It was supposed to be the equivalent of Win Twins.

"Ease him back in?"

He's played SS for approximately the last 20 years. It's been 8 days.

And you know for a fact he didn’t have any residual effects from his illness? No shortness of breath, fatigue, brain fog, vertigo?

Hasn't played in a while, hasn't had a rehab stint. Doesn't seem that hard to understand easing him back.

Let's see... trot out to shortstop, smack hand into glove, wait for somebody to hit the ball in his direction, take a half dozen steps in one direction or another IF the ball does get hit to shortstop, field ball, throw ball...

It ain't like he's going to run a mile, lift heavy weights, wrestle a 300 lb offensive lineman, dig a ditch, play tennis, etc.

If he's too weak to play short he should still be home resting.

I think it fits with easing a guy in to the lineup to DH Correa. Glad he’s back. Good job by Palacios in his absence.

Palacios glove was something special, hopefully Correa can continue to hit the Yankees well in the Twins uni.

Being a resident of Las Vegas for the last 30+ years I have to say, that is the worst betting strategy I have ever heard.

I’m impressed some of you found Correa’s personal phone number, gave a full body assessment of him, studied epidemiology, hacked the Twins’ servers to get full access of his medical records, and determined he should play SS tonight. Really impressed.

I just moved my mouse over the day to stay active on Slack.

Can’t someone just have an opinion around here without getting totally ripped for it

There are plenty of opinions that don’t get ripped. The ones complaining about Correa not playing SS without having the slightest idea about his health status should and will be ripped.

Agree to disagree. I'm not going to debate it. Obviously, no one knows for certain about his symptoms. If he did indeed have any of that going on, why activate him at all? Just my two cents. If he's healthy enough to be activated, he should be healthy enough to play in the field. This "easing" him into the line up is baloney.

He's got brain fog or vertigo and they're standing him 4 inches from a baseball thrown at 90 mph?

If he wasn't over his covid symptoms, he wouldn't be active.

This is Rocco being Rocco. I bet he gets a day off before the week is over, too.

If there are health issues, he shouldn't be playing.

Is it your contention he's playing while still suffering covid effects?

Did you bet yesterday too? Out of curiosity, what kind of odds are you seeing?

I did, I went a little on NYY -1.5 at 2.15 odds (decimal system) and also on NYY win at 1.64. I noticed the lines shifted to about 1.8 and 1.5 respectively before the game started, so it seemed the sharp money was going towards the Yanks.

Aren't you being a too hyperbolic? I'm putting a very small amount of money on a matchup that has historically resulted in a 75% chance of victory. Is it a bad strategy? Sure, I can get why you say that, it's based upon a narrative rather than the actual factors of the game. But the worst? Dude, I know people who pay social media influencers to give them their 'special picks' and lose way too much money, sometimes falling for the Martingale trap (doubling your bet after a loss). The only downside of this strategy is that I lose a very small amount of cash - that coincides in the Twins ending their struggles against the Yankees.

I actually like Danchat's betting strategy. I used to bet baseball and stopped because it became a bit too much of an obsession rather than fun. Last night's bet did seem like a slam dunk for the Yankees but even if you lose you win because then the Twins win the game. Works for me. I'm thinking about tonight's game. Danchat,  which of the online services is the best?

I was kind of joking as I assumed you were, but betting on the Yankees as a means to jinx them? Nothing more needs to be said about that really… and you did say that you won a nice chunk of money and since the Yankees were the favorites, in order to win a nice chunk you have to put up a nicer chunk
