Yankees 10, Twins 4: Duffey Clobbered Again as Twins Drop Game One

Recommended Posts

I know there is no such thing as a true moral victory, but the Twins roster is just so depleted right now, and they went toe to toe against a very good Yankees team for 6 innings.

When I saw Duffey come in, my heart sank and I just knew we were going to lose. Then he gets the 2 outs and suddenly I'm thinking the "good" Duffey might be back and we can still win this game.

But, nope, the "bad" Duffey appeared again. I know players slump, and RP can look really awful when they do because of SSS, but Duffey just keeps doing this. I don't want anyone to fail and I don't want to see anyone lose their job, but right now Duffey looks no better than a mop up guy.

Smoke and mirrors? How many starting pitchers do you think a team has at any one time? They are down four starting pitchers.

We are down more than that … Ryan, Gray, Ober, Winder, Paddack, Dobnak and Maeda. Maeda was the only one we knew about well ahead of time.

I am trying to understand the "plan" I keep hearing about. They pulled Smeltzer in Toronto supposedly because they didn't want him to face the top top of the order for the 3rd time, yet he had been pitching fairly well after settling in and had a low pitch count. Last night they leave Sands in (which I completely agree with) in basically the same situation even though he wasn't pitching that well, and it didn't appear on TV they had anyone getting ready in the pen in case of a meltdown. So was the plan to just throw him under the bus and let the team lose or what?

I legit feel bad for Duffey, seems like he's as frustrated by it as we are. But- thats the job, and he appears to know it.

A reliever life can go by quickly - maybe his time is simply done based on stats the last and this year.

Not that I saw any other real good options in our pen at the moment however to take his spot.

Possibly the worst move was having righty Duffy intentionally walk righty  judge to pitch to lefty Rizzo. Obviously Judge is the MVP right now, but statistically that was backwards thinking. As an out- of-towner who watches on MLB.com, I can can choose to listen to Bremer or the opposition announcers. I'm not a fan of Bremer, so I listened to the Yankees guys. They pointed out the lefty/right stats for Duffy said he is better against righties, which is typical. Terrible move by Rocco, even though I do think he's doing an overall excellent job juggling this team.

It sure seemed that way.

Seriously- it’s emblematic of my major problem with Rocco.  He seems to go into every game with a “this is my plan and if we lose- shrug” attitude

Only one of which, i believe, has ever thrown as much as 150 innings in any season, minors or majors (Gray).

Let's stop pretending this is incredibly bad luck. This is the pitching staff the FO designed. You can't, for example, put Bailey Ober in your rotation and think he's going to last the season. He's never done that, and they don't ask that from pitchers in the minors any more, so what to they expect?

Not that all of them are hurt at one time.

What do people realistically expect? They traded for two starters, and signed two starters. They had Ryan and Ober. They had Winder and Smeltzer. How many starters do people think it's realistic to have, when they had almost zero two years ago? The pitching was utterly barren when they took over. Zero. Nada. Nil.

We have to disagree here.  The game was 5 - 4 - yes the Yankees were leading, but do you give up in the seventh inning.  Duffey might come back again, but this was potentially a winnable game.  At that point you shut down the Yankees if you have the arm to do it and try to manufacture a run in the next three innings.

You've got the Pagan situation from last week all over again.

First, this Yankees team is literally historically great. The stats are unreal. Pitching and hitting.

Second, I'm done with Duffey. He's not worth keeping around. He's a morale killer at this point, not to mention just bad at his job. I'm bummed. Always kind of liked him.

Third. Meh. One game.  On the plus side, they scored 4 runs against this staff, which is hard to do.

The last team to have this hot of a start was the 2001 Mariners who won 116 games. It bears repeating that the Yankees are on a historically great run right now.

So it went from utterly barren to what? Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard.

The Twins are basically smoke and mirrors at this point.

It's not the FO fault. There has been absolute roster carnage this year so far.

No team could survive this volume of injury.

It could get ugly, but I'm holding out hope that they can limp for a month or so until people get healthy and the trade deadline happens.

But, alas.... Hope is indeed not a plan

Dude, this is 100% the FO fault!!!  How can you even throw that out there??  The FO is who didn't bother to get into the high end SP market and, again, went straight up dumpster diving again.  They also didn't make a single upgrade to the already trash bullpen and, in fact, straight up downgraded it on opening day.  The FO only appeared to save themselves for one more year when the had Correa fall into their lap as a trade chip at this year's deadline.

I would never call the Buxton signing a win for the FO because they had zero options except to resign him.

In case Rocco was wondering, the 7th would have been a great time to throw Duran out there for two innings, given he’s only thrown 8 pitches in the last 4 days before today.  Get through the 8-5 hitters (assumes one base runner), and see what you can do to get a couple more runs.  After that, you just have to piece together the 9th against hitters 6-8/9.

You forgot the biggest factor in that equation.  Rocco predetermined before the game even started that Duffy was coming in and would get two innings to get things straight.  And once it's written in stone Rocco is completely incapable of making a decision on the fly.  Don't you find it weird that as Duffy was imploding no one was warmed up, or warming up, in the bullpen.  Why do you think Duffy had to get the last out of the inning after giving up the HR?  No one else was ready because Rocco never considered the chance that Duffy would come apart at the seams so he didn't know what to do as it was happening.

It's also worth questioning why Tyler Duffey was the choice to pitch late in a one run game.

This is because this was one of Rocco's "forfeit games" where he refuses to use any of his best players because he's saving them for later in the series. Basically the Twins weren't playing to win last night - they were playing for a win on Wednesday/Thursday.

The problem with this strategy is that all too often, the rest of the series goes sideways and the best guys never have a chance to pitch in a meaningful game. The Twins may very well lose the next two games by double-digits, and therefore the best chance they had to win was during that 1-run contest last night*.

As a fan, I want my guys to play to win TODAY - and worry about tomorrow when we get there. Rocco's approach to the MLB season has always been way too far sighted for my taste.

*In fairness, a team should have a bullpen full of major leaguers that can get batters out, regardless of how good the team they are facing is. The Twins have some serious holes in the 'pen and need to make changes.

This post above is 100% #Truth

Dang it duffey ...

twins kept Colome all season because we didn't have any options in depth ,,,,

We have options this season that are better than duffey  ...

Duffey has no business pitching with a 1 run lead ...

We battled until dfa duffey came to the bump and zapped all the adrenaline out of the players ...

Good thing we don't have Berrios right?  Wrong!   We need him and need him bad.  He is good for 7+ innings and would keep us from using the BP.  Frankly I know nothing much about the rest of the starters.  Hard to make any judgements when you can't watch them on TV (Not switching from DishTV for this team).  I think tonight is finally I game I can watch.

Yankees had 3 errors and only two more hits than the Twins and still won, what Duffey did is in your face but there are far more problems than that; some here dissed the homer happy Twins, right now if there were still here, thing would probably be different.

And yet the Orioles have already beaten them twice, and haven't lost yet my more than 2 runs. The Orioles.

No one is saying the Yankees aren't good. It's just that many have been saying that the Twins are also good. If they are, they need to also beat the other good teams. Even great teams. No one expects the Twins to sweep this Yankees team. But winning 2 out of 3 at home is not an unreasonable place to set the bar for a Twins team we're supposed to be buying into.

And they still could. This could have been the one bad game of this series. But my guess is, it won't be.

Erm……have you seen his stats so far this year? He currently has a 5.24 ERA with a 1.41 WHIP and -0.2 WAR. And his Baseball Savant stats say that he’s been pitching pretty horribly:B1E2CDBD-C83D-4E57-B928-4A41BE565801.jpeg.39165d1edd9c76b85633ad52d754d107.jpeg

Did you see his game against the Twins.  Savants and stats are one thing.  He is a very good starter that gives his team at least 7 innings.  Have you read what his team thinks of him.  Did you see this game " José Berríos’ fantastic outing in Saturday’s 12-3 win over the Twins, the gang’s now all here."

"“We’ll have a chance to win every day,” Montoyo said. “You know what one thing is about Berríos? We’re actually 8-3 when he starts. Of course, he hasn’t been the most consistent, but today it was awesome to see him come back from that start in Anaheim and pitch like that. It’s huge and it’s good to see.”"

Also, archer needs to go as far as possible tomorrow, if he’s doing passably well. Has to. Throw the computer and excel sheets aside for a night. We can’t have another 4 inning or less start.

Agreed he has to go as far as possible. As far as possible seems likely to be 3 innings. Things have been falling apart for Archer in the 4th inning like clockwork.

We were at the game and time stood still when Cano came in. Taking off his glove and walking to the back of the mound to scrape his cleats after almost every pitch is why MLB must institute a pitch clock. Stuff like that is we we routinely have 4 hour games.

And then Duffey came in......  I told my wife that the one run deficit would quickly become a four run deficit. Wished I was wrong.

Rocco got ejected due to his own frustration of keeping all his relievers in too long. It was like he thought the game was over in the fifth inning. Also, DFA Duffey.

He pulls his starters to quick and leaves his relievers in to long.
