Article: Joe Mauer and catcher framing

Recommended Posts

Robots could probably hit the ball with more power and consistency, but that doesn't make for good sport. I think Baseball, more than any other established sport, will be the most intractable about letting the human element disappear from the judgment and enforcement of its rules.

Perhaps...but on the other hand baseball is really the only sport right now that could have significant input from technology to improve the ref'ing. That's not to say that other sports ref's are better or that other sports couldn't improve with more consistent ref'ing afforded by technology but technology just isn't advanced enough to help much other sports. Personally I don't see it getting to that point any time soon either.

Take football, it would be great if there were some kind of GPS technology to help more accurately place the ball but the technology just isn't there yet. Likewise technology can't make a judgement call about pass interference or leading with the helmet or roughing the passer or holding.

Seems to me baseball is much more technology friendly. In the end baseball might be the first to adopt some major technology improvements just because the technology isn't ready yet for football, basketball or hockey.

1) With this article, I think you need years worth of data to determine whether this is a catcher skill.

2) And like others, if the technology works, I have to say that I think it should be used. I for one am tired of watching my team's strike zone shrinking when they play the Yankees or Redsox.
