The actual date is May 30--two weeks from today. While I do wonder about these things, it seems injuries usually take care of full rosters. There's been speculation about the position players when Correa, Garlick and Larnach are activated, but I fully expect that someone will go on the IL rather than Lewis or Celestino being optioned.

Having to drop a pitcher is actually a plus for a roster addition, keeping Miranda and/or Lewis in the fold. Yes, Garlick would seem to be the odd man out. But barring the need for a third catcher, the Twins would now have a four man bench, and without a true DH, five men who need to find a place to play (Sanchez, Miranda, Gordon, Lewis, and Kepler). Now that is a bench in your search for a DH and any of those guys could hapily spell a position regular.

Why use an option and deny the player service time? Rehab assignments are exactly for what you originally said “to get some playing time” so that they are full-speed when they return.

Okay ... but who knows when he'd fit back into the active roster? Where is there room? Correa for Miranda, Larnach for ? My thinking was, he started out slow, and has been on the IL, that maybe some time in AAA would be good. But it's a moot point, because he traveled with the team, which means he will be slotted in at some point. We just don't know for whom, yet. Both he and Correa are basically ready, it's just a matter of when and for whom. This isn't an argument ... I was just trying to think of ways where everyone fit and Lewis wasn't the one sent down.

Bundy for Cotton makes sense, Correa for Miranda makes a whole lot of sense. Miranda isn't ready. It's that next move that's tough.  I think Lewis has earned the right to stay up on the big club and I would start him at 3B 3-4 times a week, SS once, and move Urshela to the more UTL role he was going to play with the Yankees. He can also be the RH hitting 1B. I also think sending Lewis back is what will happen with the idea of bringing him back up later in the season after a trade, injury, etc.

Who would I send down/DFA? I think the answer is Kyle Garlick. He's a one trick pony and not part of any sort of long term future. Celestino and Lewis have shown that they are ready - let's keep them up and play them regularly. Gordon helps the team as much as Garlick does in a different way.  The only other answer I see is losing a pitcher, maybe Cano or Smeltzer although both looked good in their last appearances and given our lack of length from starters we sure could use as many pitchers as they will let us carry.

Maybe a trade of Urshela/Garlick in the offing?

I thought Kyle Garlick was the new Jake Cave.....

The Surge are at home in Wichita and the Saints are at Omaha. I wonder why the Twins chose to send Larnach to Wichita.

Someone suggested this, but I Googled the drive time. There's a five minute difference between the two. Or, 15 miles if you're a Midwesterner who judges road trips on mileage instead of time

Maybe because he and Kirilloff are both likely to play LF in MN and they want both playing LF every game they are in the minors?

I would be playing Kirilloff at first base!

Come June 1, the Twins have to reduce down to 13 pitchers. Assuming Ober comes back, which means Cano will probably return to St. Paul...what Twins pitcher is best GONE?

(I predict Winder, getting the Lewis treatment so he can start every sixth day in St. Paul and get his mindset in that universe).

They also will be adding another position player.

Miranda needs to play...in St. Paul. Probably rotate between first and third base. The Twins COULD remove Garlick and Godoy from the 40-man. I would be happy adding back any of the other catchers on the St. Paul roster if the need happened.

The Twins could bring up Curtis Terry to play first base, designated hitter, bench bat. Has to be betetr than what is happening. Larnach will be back, so that should push Garlick out (Kepler, Buxton, Larnach, Celestino with Gordon in reserve).

The Twins could add one more player...especially if Godoy oppens up a spot, they can have the pick or any or many.

Besides Lewis, who would you choose from the vast members of St. PaulLand. The return of Cave? Kevin Merrell? Roy Morales (a catcher/DH and 1B guy who hits well). Who would be a good bench bat?

I have a roster question regarding the series in Toronto in early June. Do we know which Twins aren’t vaccinated? They will be unable to play in Toronto as vaxes are required to play there. Simmons was in that category last year. Twins would be able to substitute with players on or off the 40 man as with COVID IL players.

I think/hope between now and June 1, assuming no injuries, we make the following changes:

Ober for Cano (prob tomorrow or Sunday),

Larnach for Miranda (this weekend or Monday),

Lewis for Smeltzer (or Winder if Smeltaer out performs him, or Archer or Bundy if they get hurt).

The bench bat is whoever is not in the lineup so Lewis can play every day - Urshela 3 days a week, Sanchez 3 days a week, one day a week for Correa, Larnach and Polanco.

With Smeltzer optioned, do we know who replaces him? I suspect it is Larnach for now, with a pitcher to be added if needed.

Ober is listed as the starter for Sunday,

Ober was activated today. However I just saw that Winder went on the IL so not sure what the other move is there now.

I'm seeing Trevor Megill's name but cannot find anything that confirms it. That would also require a 40 man move.

So... Winder to the Il, Smelzter down to be the 6th starter in waiting at AAA. Ober activated as the #3 starter behind Gray and Ryan, Megill up to the bullpen, and Vallimont DFA'd to make 40 man room for Megill. Next likely move is Larnach for. . .. seems like it should be Miranda . . . but he did have 2 hits last night . . .  Let's see if Mirnada plays again tonight and maybe tomorrow and, if he hits, we don't have an Il stint coming for Garlick, Buxton, or Gordon if Miranda goes 3-8 in the next 2 games....

I'd prefer Minaya over Megill...

Minaya had two consecutive bad outings May 13 and 20, and that could have played into the decision.

/ edit - I looked him up, and actually his last 6 games amount to a 9.72 ERA (.996 OPS against), so maybe something just isn't right with him at the moment.

Interesting. Miranda stays for now? I hope they’re going to play him if he stays. I frankly think he needs to go back to AAA and work on some things but I think the worst thing they can do is keep him on the MLB roster to play a day or two week. He needs the at bats to get better.

I said that about Celestino, too ... dunno ... I guess maybe they have a different eye to things than we do?

Yes, I have. It does seem that both Winder and Stashak were pitching acceptably and when the need for a roster spot developed, they were put on the Injured List. I expect those two (and Jhon Romero) have legitimate arm issues that in other circumstances they would try to pitch through, but with the roster crunch what it is, the management staff elected for them to deal with the ailment.
