I imagine Contreras and Cotton are COVID substitutes for Arraez and Bundy and will be gone when they return, keeping in line that non-40-man guys can be added in such a situation.

I don't think this is 100% the case this year. Think it depends how many guys are out. Thad was on BSN the other day in Baltimore and said the Twins would have to operate with 40-man rules in place even with the COVID illness, although that could've changed. I would assume Godoy/Strotman/Villimont/Sands are canidates to be DFA'd, but like someone else said, we could see a 60 man move. Arraez and Bundy are both back to being healthy, but no sense in activating Bundy until he's in line to pitch, and I assume they want Arraez to get some swings in before he's activated. When that happens, I assume Contreras is back to AAA (and probably DFA'd), although it could be AK. Cotton will likely be the one gone when Bundy is due to pitch.

It absolutely is the case. Other teams have been using it all season.

Not according Levine. There has to be a minimum of three players out with COVID to allow the club to go outside the 40-man roster. It wouldn’t surprise me if Arraez gets activated tonight, with Godoy being optioned. I expect Sanó is being moved to the 60-day list and the other space will be made by DFA.

Great to see Contreras get the promotion, I'm interested to see what he can do in the majors. He's a quality fielder, draws plenty of walks, and has some pop in his bat.

I find it odd that Cotton is already back up after not pitching that much in AAA. Got to think that Cano will be getting his first chance sooner than later.

I think Cano is better than Cotton, and I actually think the Twins think the same thing. But the Twins want 40 man roster flexibility. If they need room, they would DFA Cotton again, whether it's this week or in the future. With Cano, he would occupy the 40 man roster for the rest of the season.

They are paying Cotton a major league salary, although he is no longer on the 40-man, or something mroe than the minor league minimum, which is why was surprised when they didn't release him in spring training.

I heard... Levine, maybe?... say the other day that 40-man rules stay in place until three players are on the Covid list at the same time.

Or something like that. I wasn't paying close attention. But I'm pretty sure there are stipulations to the rule now.

That is what Levine said. So the full story is that COVID IL players are not on the 40-man roster, but their place on the 26-man roster must be taken by players on the 40-man roster. So when Arraez and Bundy return, two players must be subtracted from the 40-man roster. Sano would be a candidate for the 60-day IL and Paddack, if he does have surgery. Also Coulombe, if his injury is serious. Cotton could be DFAed and there are a few 40-man pitchers who have not had good seasons to date (Strotman and Vallimont) and finally Godoy, who has been on the squad a few days, but hasn't played.

I believe Cotton and Contreras were put on the 40 man roster with Arraez and Bundy moving to Covid-IL, and not counting against the 40 man. Then, Cano was added with Romero going to the 60 day-IL. Finally, Arraez was back with Paddock going to 60 day-IL. Bundy remains on the Covid-IL and will require a DFA when he returns.

Looks like Smeltzer coming up. Maybe now Sano to 60 day?

They will need to make room for Smeltzer and Bundy, when he's ready to pitch. Both will require a 40-man move. The Twins can add a pitcher, but option a position player--Miranda, Kirilloff and Contreras would all be candidates to be optioned. Contreras could be DFAed to make space on the 40-man roster. Sano to the 60-day IL looks like another obvious move.

My guess is Smeltzer gets DFA’d after he starts today to make room for Bundy.

I really doubt that. Smeltzer would appear to add value as a long man out of the bullpen now that the previous long man Winder is in the rotation. Plus, the Twins have only one left hander on their roster with Coulombe on the IL.

Garlick is set to be activated on Friday, with Correa and Larnach not far behind. I would expect that Miranda,  Kirilloff and Contreras all get optioned. Miranda or Kirilloff could stick around because the Twins only have Arraez as a first baseman.

I don't see Kiriloff getting sent down. They need Arraez to be able to move to 2B or 3B on occasion. I'd be stunned if they kept Miranda up over him. If both get sent down I guess that would mean we see Sanchez play some 1B, as he has been taking grounders there. If they decided to move Lewis to 3B, then I guess Urshela could play some 1B. Rather than risk losing the DH id Sanchez/Jeffers gets hurt while catching and the other is the DH, that might make more sense for them to both play 1B and let someone else DH. Rocco said last night that they would be alternating C and DH duties. I don't even know who the emergency C is at this point since Romero is out.

Must be Gordon.

Can they send a guy coming off Covid for a rehab assignment? I'd like to see Bundy get a shakedown cruise before rolling him out in a real game.

Yes, players on the COVID injured list are eligible for rehab assignments. The A’s did it recently with Lou Trivino.
