Wasn’t Winder the 27th Man for the double hitter? He was just returned to AAA them without an official move.

He was the 27th man. With all the transactions the Twins have had, I thought there might be some chance that someone else would go on the IL (with Winder staying) or perhaps someone else sent to St. Paul.

How does service time work for 27th men in doubleheaders? I know Winder isn't optioned, merely returned, but does he only get one day's MLB service time? Further, does this count toward the 15 days he must stay in AAA (barring injury) or the 20 days required to make the move an official option?

Who are the Twins going to send down or place on the Injured List to make room for Winder?

I did not think about the required minor league time and, as you said, who knows when his clock started and stopped on that. I would actually put Bundy in long relief in the pen and Thornburg would be sent down. Bundy seems to do well with longer rest and I think Winder should be on a set schedule.

I'm pretty sure it does not count toward the 15 days rule.

In case anyone is wondering, Emilio Pagan can't be optioned to St. Paul without his consent. The rule is after five years of service MLB players can refuse to be optioned. Pagan passed five years of service earlier this month.

Ah!  I knew he was close, and the sources I looked at said just-under, but I didn't take into account that these would be season-start numbers and that of course the odometer continues to roll.  Good catch.

Player gets 1 day service time. If the player had been previously optioned recently it would not reset the days on having to stay in the minors.

We keep sending guys off the roster, and the only job they can end up keeping is staying with the Saints, to maybe get recalled again. First Cotton, next Rodriguez, then Minaya, now Thornburg. Well, I guess Chi Chi was the exception.

I keep hoping the Twins will just say "What the hell, let's bring up Strotman. Hey, we can do a legit option if we really want to keep him on the 40-man. But let's see if being in the majors is something he really wants."

Who knows, he could be the next...Griffin Jax!?! Seems such a waste to trade for a guy and not do anything of importance with him. Can he be any worse than the "other" one-nite wonders?

I thought he was under 5 years with an option left?

Pagán started 2022 with 4.091 years of service. A year of service 172 days. Add 83 days to the 91 and he’s over by two days.

So he timed his implosion well.

He probably passed the threshold a few days earlier since the season is compressed by a week. I think players get credit from the originally scheduled opening day.

I actually think anything that limits Winder's usage now is going to pay dividends later in the season. Would be nice to have him available in September and beyond.

Dang, Minaya pitched well and gets punished for it - looks like Pagan and Duffey have plenty more rope to burn.

Geez Minaya has been tossed around this year. Tough break I'm rooting for the guy.

Is a mixed blessing. If he pitched well enough, perhaps he piqued another team's interest and gets traded/claimed.

Has it been long enough that we may have heard about it?

He’s pitching in AAA for us, he recently gave up 4 runs in an inning IIRC.

I do wish AAA St. Paul would start looking harder at pitchers that could be once and future Twins, rather than one-offs and gone minor league free agents.

Can they look quick and hard and Henriquez and Balazovic and even Sands as bullpen possibilities? That would make rotation room for Canterino and Varland to come to St. Paul and start. Cano and Hamilton should be groomed enough to egt the call over any of the remaining free agents signed (Sanchezes, Wood, Bashlor, Viza etc.).

I am shaking my head that Thornburg, Minaya and Cotton and Derek Rodriguez have all NOT been claimed by other teams, or signed by other teams (yet CHi Chi Rodriguez was). But is it necessary to retain them for future work by the Twins?

Makes sense. Winder won't pitch again before the ASG and this lengthens the bullpen. May also explain why Ryan was lifted after 75 pitches today; he may start Sunday on a 5 inning/75 pitch leash for the traditional "all hands on deck" last game before the AS break.

Archer is pitching on Sunday.
